According to the Wall Street Journal, the Securities and Exchange Commission has opened an informal investigation into the online postings of Whole Foods CEO John Mackey. And my favorite part: Eddy Elfenbein of Crossing Wall Street has posted Rahodeb's (Mackey's handle) greatest hits, including this one: "Oh yes, 'the John Mackey identity theory'. I've heard it a few times before on this Board. Believe it if you wish since it enhances the value of what I write."...

Time Magazine's current cover story is Eating Better Than Organic by John Cloud, in which he explores the debate between buying local and buying organic. Which is better for the food system, food grown by a small farmer locally or one grown by a big organic firm that uses large-scale industrial methods? Is buying local food that might have been treated with pesticides better for the environment than organic food that's been trucked, shipped and flown from far away, using up tons of fossil fuels? I read a lot of this blog when I lived in London. While they've been rather silent over the last few months, it's (usually) kept up by a group of marketing consultants who, as a hobby, discuss British supermarket megachain Sainsbury's. I particularly like this post. Are there any American forums for intelligent badinage about the directions our supermarkets head and tail in? I like John Mackey's blog on the Whole Foods website, particularly his open conversations with Michael Pollan (you may have to toggle between the WF and MP websites to follow the discussion all the way through), but I don't know of any others. Wouldn't it be great to be an active participant in American supermarket construction?...
