'Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams' on Serious Eats
Fifteen food trucks have taken over the property at the corner of Rainey and Driskill Streets for SXSW. This pop-up food truck court, christened "SouthBites," was curated by Austin star chef Paul Qui.
If you're a fan of Jeni's ice cream, be sure to visit their ice cream truck this week, where they're giving away free scoops in flavors like salty caramel and roasted strawberry buttermilk.
Whiskey and Pecans seems like a logical enough combination, but you don't realize just how perfectly these two flavors pair until that first buttery spoonful of Whiskey & Pecans by Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams.
We just met all the winter flavors at Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams... itching for a taste, yet? You're in luck, because Jeni's is giving away a set of their Valentine's Day collection to one lucky Serious Eater.
Jeni's is a favorite among ice cream geeks for its creative flavors, clean, ultra-creamy texture, and stellar ingredients. Unlike most ice cream makers, Jeni's eschews egg yolks for a mix of cream cheese, tapioca starch, and tapioca syrup, which lets the other ingredients shine their brightest. The resulting texture is wonderfully rich but never heavy. We tasted all of Jeni's Winter season ice creams, and while we weren't in love with every flavor (which clock in at $12 a pint), we'll have no trouble making these pints disappear well before spring. Click through the slideshow above for all the ice cream love.
I don't have much of a sweet tooth, and I don't generally write about places that specialize in dessert, but over the course of a recent road trip through Ohio, I tasted more than one thing that has convinced me to lift my embargo on sweets long enough to write a post.
Jeni Britton Bauer's approach to ice cream making is cerebral, wide ranging, and smart. Instead of limiting herself to the typical pastry pantry of sweets, Britton Bauer raids the savory kitchen as well as the liquor cabinet for ice cream inspiration. It's that sort of forward thinking that makes for incredible combinations like this Celery Ice Cream with Candied Ginger and Rum-Plumped Golden Raisins from Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home.
Jeni's, the Columbus, Ohio-based ice cream company, is known for an ever-changing array of creative and seasonal flavors. Think coriander-raspberry and goat cheese with red cherries, and wildberry lavender and brown butter almond brittle. Certainly a far way from plain vanilla. They also make ice cream sandwiches—and not regular ice cream sandwiches, but Macaron Ice Cream Sandwiches.
After one spoonful Jeni's won me over for life and, based on the spirited discussion in the comments section, I'm not the only ice cream lover who's wild for Jeni's. I thought it would be worth the trip to sample these seasonally inspired, locally sourced flavors as close to the source as possible.
Ordering ice cream online can be a pricey endeavor. But when you're talking about Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams out of Columbus, Ohio, there's very little arm-twisting needed when you can choose from signature and seasonal flavors like Salty Caramel, Chocolate Cornflake Crunch, Gooey Butter Cake, and Brown Butter Almond Brittle.
