I heard Anthony Bourdain talking about race in the restaurant industry last year, and he said something about standing on the stage at the James Beard Awards and staring into a sea of white faces. I didn't realize how much that wasn't hyperbole until I saw Noah Kalina's crowd photos from the 2007 awards over at Eater; I couldn't find a single non-white face among the attendees in the first crowd close-up. Beard Award Recap

It is now noon, and though my stomach and fingers haven’t recovered from the food I consumed and the liveblogging I did on my Treo at the James Beard Awards last night, I have now had a few hours of sleep and a moment to reflect on what was overall a typically long and delicious night. Hannah Storm was an adequate host, lending a sort of interminably annoying perkiness and no real feeling for what she was up there for. I will say she is stunning and knows how to make love to a teleprompter. Overall there were no surprises and therefore no genuinely tense moments. Thomas Keller won for Restaurateur of the Year, which prompted fellow nominee Drew Nieporent...

Liveblogging the Beard Awards

As I tap this out on my Treo phone, I'm in the audience at the James Beard Awards at New York City's Lincoln Center. I'll be liveblogging the awards tonight, keeping you up-to-the-minute on who's won what and giving you some additional information when I can—depending on how speedy I am with the tiny keyboard. 7:10 p.m. Rising Star Chef: David Chang is going to win. I know it. Chang just won. He thanked the team. Hannah Storm is too perky by half. She knows how to make love to a teleprompter. The first of the American Classics are coming up. 7:13 p.m. America's Classics: Primanti Brothers love the fries on sandwich, and they won. Can't argue with this choice....

James Beard Journalism Awards Announced: A Few Thoughts From Your SE Overlord

I attended the James Beard Journalism Awards, and as you might imagine I have a few things to say. First of all, the big winners: Best Food Section: The San Francisco Chronicle rightfully bested the Boston Globe, which has a pretty good food section, and the Chicago Tribune, which really doesn't. One thing to note: The New York Times has a policy against entering. The Best National Television Show Award went to Gourmet's intriguing attempt at doing something that isn't the same old, same old: "Diary of a Foodie." America's Test Kitchen, which is fun in a geeky way, and Lidia's Family Table, which is homey and heartfelt to the max, rounded out the field. I have many reservations about...

Bourdain Says Beard Foundation Is Clueless

Already not a fan of the James Beard Foundation, Anthony Bourdain is pissed off at the plans they've made for this year's awards: This year, it has been decided that in favor of bigger and swankier accommodations for the self-congratulatory nearly all-white attendees, that the cooks can take it in their collective poop-chute. At the new venue, Avery Fisher Hall, only hot boxes, induction tops, and propane burners are allowed. Reheats only! Out of town chefs with ambitions to actually cook at some point in the prep process are invited to bunk with the locals, jamming their food and staff into New York's already too-small, too crowded kitchens. Here's the official explanation of the James Beard Best New Restaurant Award: "A restaurant opened in 2006 that already displays excellence in food, beverage and service, and is likely to make a significant impact in years to come." And the nominees are: A Voce: Chef: Andrew Carmellini, Owner: Marlon Abela, 41 Madison Avenue, NY, NY 212-545-8555. A Voce is a very good restaurant combining Andrew Carmellini's classical training with Daniel Boulud (and others) and his Italian-American roots. Wondering why your favorite chef or restaurant didn't get a nomination for this year's James Beard Awards? Jennifer Leuzzi says there are requirements for nomination: Yosuke Suga, chef at L'Atelier de Robuchon, is surely one of the best chefs in NYC, yes? The James Beard Award nominations were announced yesterday, and at Serious Eats we don't want you to have to sift through all nine pages of nominees [PDF], so let's see if we can cut to the chase for you. The Outstanding Restaurateur nominees feature some actual and different heavyweight restaurateurs, including Richard Melman (Lettuce Entertain You, Chicago), Drew Nieporent (Nobu (NY), Rubicom (SF), and many others), and Keith McNally (Balthazar, Pastis, and Morandi, among others).
