The Lower East Side has no shortage of booze-spongey food open late on the cheap. But some bites are better than others, worth a special trip no matter the hour. From hero sandwiches and corner slices to meatballs and steamed crab legs, here are 15 ways to eat well after after dark on the LES.
'Il Laboratorio del Gelato' on Serious Eats
Few places embrace just plain caramel anymore—it's always about the salted caramel nowadays. But at Il Laboratorio del Gelato, it's regular Caramel ($4.25/two-scoop small) that might be my all time favorite.
As National Ice Cream Month draws to a close this week, we'd like to leave our readers with one last icy, creamy, and delicious gift. Here are the SE staffers' favorite ice creams in NYC (although some of us had a hard time deciding on just one).
The problem isn't what to get at Il Laboratorio del Gelato; it's how to make the most of combining those flavors. After plenty of trial and error, I think I've hit on my favorite mix.
To say we're gelato freaks at SE HQ is putting it lightly—and we know we're not alone. So where do we go when we want consistently amazing gelato in flavors that sing? Take a look at our favorites.
Here's a stunner for the warm spring weather. Il Laboratorio del Gelato is churning out batches of decidedly lush and fragrant rose gelato ($4.25/small). It pairs exceptionally well with milk chocolate (the rose notes give the heavier chocolate a floral lift), and also with a scoop of strawberry—complimentary flavors that could not possibly be prettier in appearance. It's not excessively floral in flavor, present enough to appreciate but still delicate with a light, barely sweet finish.
Before we usher straight into spring and summer, keep an eye out for the Honey-Chestnut gelato at Il Laboratorio del Gelato. Chestnut is the predominate flavor, full-bodied and creamy, studded with the tiniest bits of roasted chestnuts. Subtle notes of honey are evenly laced throughout, an ideal pairing and perfect backdrop to the chestnuts.
It's that time of the year again: pumpkin season. We're seeing it in sweets around the city, from pumpkin whoopie pies filled with cream cheese frosting to pumpkin gelato and pumpkin ice cream; pumpkin cheesecake and pumpkin cupcakes and layered pumpkin brownies.
Summer is here to stay, and while you may be tempted to huddle inside in the air conditioning, it's worth stepping out into the city for one of these frozen treats. Ice cream, gelato, soft-serve; it's hard to say which we like more. So we rounded up our favorite scoops, swirls, and (ice cream) sandwiches in New York City: some old friends, and some new favorites.
The numerous gelato flavors offered at any given time at Il Laboratorio del Gelato means that the milkshake possibilities are endless. Especially when you consider the fact that they allow you to mix up to four gelato flavors into a single milkshake.
Fruit smoothies, chocolate smoothies, almond-based numbers, fig milkshakes, and a twist on the traditional Vietnamese ca phe su da. These drinks are perfect for life on the go, and many can suffice as a meal—or dessert, at the very least! Today we bring you our Top 5 Sweets Drinks of 2010.

These last few days have almost done me in. So I've been treating myself to one scoop of ice cream a day (no more, no less, given my "eat less" diet, which has me down 40 pounds). Here are my...
