Based on Turkey Hill Ice Cream, the Phillies Should Win

"Not exactly sure what this says about tomorrow's game. Just that graham cracker ice cream rules? And there should be more of it?" [Photographs: Robyn Lee] We got our paws on Turkey Hill's special Yankees and Phillies ice cream flavors that we mentioned yesterday. All four are actually available year-round at most of the major grocery store chains in the tri-state area, so if you don't see them, try poking the frozen foods manager to hook you up. No matter how well the teams do all season, they should be available. Turkey Hill is proud to be the official and exclusive ice cream for both teams (just like Hood, which makes "Fenway Fudge," is for the Red Sox). Turkey Hill's...

Turkey Hill's Special World Series Ice Cream

Even if you're not a baseball fan, you might appreciate this: Turkey Hill's four limited edition ice cream flavors inspired by the Yankees and Phillies: the Phillies Graham Slam (graham ice cream with chocolate marshmallow cups and a graham swirl), Phillie Phanatic Double Play (Bavarian cream-flavored ice cream with caramel corn and caramel swirl), the Yankees Bronx Bombers Sundae (chocolate ice cream with chocolate cookie swirl and chocolate covered crunchies), and the Pinstripe Brownie Blast (vanilla ice cream with brownie batter swirl and brownie pieces). Unfortunately, these are typically just available in the tri-state area....

What Would You Do?

McSweeney's Internet Tendency has a silly item that riffs on the "What would you do for a Klondike Bar?" ad campaign: "Ethical Dilemmas Involving Klondike Bars." Example: You operate an orphanage and your funding has just been slashed. Kids are now going without dessert. Your friend owns a grocery store and is willing to donate 500 Klondike bars to the orphans if you lie and tell the government that he donated 1,000. What would you do-o-o? I was a little disappointed that there was no scenario involving a terrorist, his baby, a crowded stadium with a bomb planted in it, and a Klondike Bar. How to Make Ice Cream Gyoza

[Flickr: L. Marie] For a unique ice cream treat, Evil Mad Scientist shows you how to make ice cream gyoza, ice cream-stuffed cookie dough pouches formed in a gyoza press, with chocolate sauce on the side. I think I'd prefer a greater ice cream-to-dough ratio, but ice cream, chilled cookie dough, and chocolate sounds like a winning combination. How to Make an Ice Cream Smore'wich

[Flickr: missginsu] An obvious dessert for a weekend of grilling are s'mores. but when the weather's hot, you're going to want a cool treat. And thus the Ice Cream Smore'wich was born! Miss Ginsu shows you how to make it by sharing two recipes: an easy one that uses pre-made graham crackers, chocolate fudge sauce, vanilla ice cream, and marshmallows; and, for the more culinarily skilled, a more time-consuming one involving homemade graham crackers, fudge sauce, and toasted marshmallow swirl ice cream. The folks at Vermont-based ice cream–maker Ben & Jerry's have renamed their signature Chubby Hubby flavor "Hubby Hubby" to mark today's enactment of the state's new law that allows same-sex marriage. A Hubby Hubby sundae will be available in Vermont Ben & Jerry's scoop shops during the month of September. The Chubby Hubby packaging in grocery stores nationwide will remain unchanged and as heteronormative as ever. Lesbians, sorry: No "Wifey Wifey" for you....

Do Biodegradable Spoons Ruin the Ice Cream Experience?

There's something about a cold metal spoon, especially the long ones for parfait glasses, to shovel up ice cream. The metal probably isn't helping the ozone layer or saving panda bears, but it's just one of those things you leave alone. As biodegradable food packaging has become more available, more ice creameries are offering specialized bowls and utensils instead. You can spot it right away: the slightly gritty mouth feel and off-white color. It was made of corn, potato starch, soy oil, or something else that sounds edible, and it belongs in a separate trash bin....

Seriously Italian: Gelato di Melone

Melons are in their peak season right now, inexpensive, plentiful, and full of sweet promise. The cantaloupes I’ve lugged home for the last two weeks have been wondrous—intensely floral, sugar-sweet juice bombs that are an easy way to flex some Italian muscle. Italians have a particular fondness for cantaloupe and its cousins. A large platter of fragrant, sliced melone is a popular and refreshing end to a meal in just about every region. In Lombardia or Emilia Romagna it may be garnished with a grind of aromatic nutmeg or a dribble of aceto balsamico; in Rome, it might receive a shower of fresh mint, and in Sicily, a sprinkle of sea salt. The classic pairing before dinner is prosciutto...
