Josh and Jessica Applestone have come out with The Butcher's Guide to Well-Raised Meats, a must-have for the conscious and conscientious meat-eating set. The Butcher's Guide is beyond comprehensive. It's a book about truly understanding exactly where our meat comes from and how it makes its way to out plates. By walking readers through all steps of butchery, from primals to popular cuts, offal, fat, storage, curing, cutting, label decoding, and so much more, The Butcher's Guide calls itself the definitive guide to eating great meat, and we concur wholeheartedly. New York-based Fleisher's Grass-Fed and Organic Meats recently hosted its annual Butcher Blackout at the Montreal restaurant Joe Beef. Despite the dinner coming directly on the heels of my gluttonous maple syrup feast at Pied de Cochon's sugar shack (it was the next night) I knew better than to turn down an opportunity to eat a massive meal of Fleisher's famed beasts multiplied by Joe Beef's spunk.
Last month we teamed up with Fleishers Meats to brainstorm a new meat-themed slogan for their line of t-shirts. Over 250 entries were submitted, many meat puns were made and we thank you for all the un-vegetarian creative outpourings. It's time to announce the winner, and tip our caps to the honorable mentions!
We're joining forces with Fleisher's Meats again to help them choose the latest tagline for their ever-growing collection of meat-themed shirts. The winner will be awarded a $100 gift certificate to Fleisher's Meats and, of course, a t-shirt. To enter to win, just leave your best tagline as a comment here. Fleisher's is looking for sassy, salacious, political, and funny—so hit us with your best shot.
Back in November we banded together with the Fleisher's Meats folks and asked you to help us brainstorm a slogan for a new t-shirt. Many entries were submitted, many meat puns were made, and we want to thank you for your creative outpourings. The winner (after much deliberation) was: Meat to Please You from Beeez. Pretty good, right? We will wear it proudly across our chests and Beeez won a $100 Fleisher's gift certificate (and of course, a tee). You too can sport it once it's available online (we'll keep you posted). Honorable mention went to: "The Lard's Prayer: Tallowed Be Thy Name" from jimmyr....
This one is hard to beat. [Photograph: fleishers.com] Fleisher's Grass-fed and Organic Meats is known for many things: outrageously delicious pasture-raised meats, funny facial hair (Fleisher's master butcher Joshua Applestone has a pretty great 'stache), and sassy tees (T-shirts that is, not T-bones). This year the Serious Eats team and Fleisher's have joined forces to choose the latest in this ever-growing collection of meat-themed shirts. We already have some great ones—the perennial favorites "Bacon, The Gateway Meat," "Juicy Loins, Tender Rumps," "Fresh Meat"; the classic "You Can't Beat Our Meat"; the political "Think Globally, Meat Locally"; and last year's winner, "Live and Loin." (All of them are available on Zazzle.) The winner will be awarded a $100 gift certificate...
