The Serious Eats Father's Day Gift Guide

We're coming to the rescue of gift-idea-starved sons and daughters everywhere with an absolutely foolproof Father's Day gift guide. These babies have been road-tested with half a dozen of my friends, all dads who appreciate some of the finer, not-so-fancy things in life. More

Cook the Book: New South Grilling

Inspired by tough-guy chefs like David Chang, Mario Batali, and Bobby Flay, men are cooking now more than ever. This year for Father's Day, why not skip the fussy cuff links, the itchy sweater vest, and the expensive golf equipment, and give Dad...a cookbook? He probably already knows how to char a burger to medium-rare and blister a hot dog until its crisp and juicy. Now with New South Grilling by Robert St. John, he'll learn the secrets to preparing hearty, bold backyard barbecue favorites inspired by the vibrant flavors of the deep south. As the Executive Chef/Owner of the Purple Parrot Café, Crescent City Grill, and Mahogany Bar in Mississippi, St. John is at the forefront of cutting edge... More

For Father's Day: Steaks and Chops

There are a whole lot of mail-order steaks out there. Even Donald Trump has gotten into the act with his Sharper Image beef. But at their best, like at Peter Luger's or Lobel's, mail-order steaks are really good and really expensive. But a few weeks ago I had a flat-iron steak from Lobel's that was killer and downright reasonable. The flat-iron cut is also known as top blade steak, and it's both very beefy and very tender, an usual combination in a moderately priced piece of beef ($15.98 plus shipping). Lobel's never freezes its meat, they only ship meat that is at least prime-graded, and if you've never had a flat-iron steak before, it will be a revelation.... More

For Father's Day: Love, Peace, and Pie

I'm a dad and I love pie, so I can only conclude that all dads love pie. What's not to love about a great pie? We all appreciate flakey, golden-brown crusts and firm, not-too-sweet fresh fruit filling, don't we? Is there anything better than a great piece of cherry pie served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or better yet some vanilla frozen custard? So this Father's Day give your dad a cherry pie from the Grand Traverse Pie Company. You'll make him very happy. Order it today and your pie will make it to your dad by Father's Day.... More

Serious Eats Father's Day Mail-Order 'Cue

With barbecue joints opening all over the country, even in barbecue wildernesses like New York, I decided my Father's Day Mail-Order 'Cue list should focus on smoked items that are hard to find outside their place of origin. Southside Market's smoked hot beef sausage is so juicy, so delicious, and so reasonably priced it's worth ordering it in bulk and freezing what you don't use. That way your dad can be enjoying his Father's Day present for a long time. If you insist on getting Texas-style beef brisket, try Saltlick or Kreuz Market. But order the brisket and not the clod (beef shoulder). It's juicier. At Alabama's Dreamland BBQ the ribs are porky, meaty and subtly smoked. Dreamland claims... More
