Ok, so in this case, maybe it's not right to call this one a grilled cheese. It's probably closer to an actual Cubano sandwich than it is to a plain old grilled cheese. But somehow "Cubano Minus a Few Things" doesn't sound quite as appealing to me as "Faux Cubano Grilled Cheese."
'Cubano' on Serious Eats
It's a cubano sandwich but without the roasted pork and the addition of a buttery, grilled crust.

This isn't the first time we've featured a sandwich from D.C.'s favorite gas station-cum-late night sandwich oasis, Fast Gourmet, and for good reason. The Chivito, as we discussed here, is one of the marquee sandwiches. The Cubano ($8.50) is definitely worthy of stomach space the next time you're out on U Street.
Cubanos (or mixtos as they're called in Cuba and Miami), with their meaty/tangy blend of roast pork, ham, cheese, and pickles, have a pretty secure spot in the list of top 10 sandwiches of all time. It can be pretty tough to find a great one in Manhattan, but Havana Central does it up right.
Also called espresso Cubano, the drink is a shot of dark-roasted espresso brewed either directly onto sugar, or with the sweet granules mixed and melted with the grounds as they're extracted.
The Cubano at Anfora Wine Bar ($10) is filled with proscuitto cotto (Italian cooked ham) and rich melted cheese, but it's the sliver-thin slices of spicy pickles that really make it good.
Has anyone else noticed that we are in kind of a Golden Age of sandwiches? There are yummy sandwiches to be found in every kind of food establishment there is, from four star restaurants to lobster shacks to food carts. At Serious Eats we decided that it's high time we celebrate the sandwich. So periodically, with any luck twice weekly, we are going to rhapsodize about some sandwich found anywhere in the world. We might opine in a way that some of you might find objectionable, but at least you'll know where we're coming from, a deep and abiding love of sandwiches. Today, I would like to rhapsodize about the Cubano Sandwich at the Spotted Pig in NYC....
