In the fast food world, fried chicken sandwiches are the new black. Just about every chain, whether a burger chain or fried chicken establishment, offers multiple versions.
But which are the best? We tried the standard fried chicken sandwiches, whether chicken patty-like or chicken fillet-like, from KFC, Popeye's, McDonald's, Chick-fil-A, Wendy's, and Burger King. During the tasting, one thing became very clear:
not all chicken is created equal.

At
Chick-fil-A, until the release of the
Spicy Chicken,
my go-to order was the classic chicken sandwich. And I'm not alone. When people rave about Chick-fil-A, it seems to me, they're usually talking about the sandwiches—the chain's flagship item, and the original anchor of their menu. But is Chick-fil-A more than a one-trick-pony? I wanted to find out.

From the moment I bit into it, I knew the sandwich was good. Really good. The breast has a lot of heat, more than the comparable Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich. The poultry portion itself is smaller in size than Wendy's, but tastes much more like chicken—you really have the impression of eating a fried-up chicken breast, as opposed to some manufactured McBreast.

Of all the meat varieties out there—sausage, ham, bacon, even steak—for some reason, chicken was never really invited to the breakfast party. Sure, there's chicken sausage, and a few fast-fooderies do chicken biscuit sandwiches (and we can't forget
Chick Fil-A's Chick-N-Minis), but still. Chicken and breakfast have never been great pals. I guess you could argue that eggs come from the cluck-cluckers, but again, that doesn't really count. Do you believe chicken is underrepresented in the breakfast genre?
How often do you eat it for breakfast? Take the poll! »

Silicon Alley Insider points us to the redesigned logo for iVillage, the interactive women's website. Hmm, why does it make us suddenly crave chicken sandwiches and waffle fries from a mall food court? All they forgot was the feather crest and beak. McDonald's Southern-style chicken biscuit tastes like an oversized McNugget in a buttery, greasy biscuit that you've had so many times before. It's too late to snag a free Southern-style chicken biscuit from McDonald's—the breakfast promotion lasted today between 7 a.m and 10:30 a.m—but if you missed out, don't worry; it wasn't totally free. As we mentioned before, there was a medium or large drink caveat, so the "freebie" cashed in at a minimum of $1.50. Overall, it wasn't the most mind-blowing experience since McDonald's already sells biscuits and chicken McNuggets, and together, they approximate this same taste concept. But borderline mind-blowing is that you can eat fried chicken for breakfast without hauling to a less-accessible Chick-fil-A or sneaking in last...

As the blog Midtown Lunch pointed out, one difference between Chick and Mick is bag vs. box. -->McDonald's Southern Style Chicken Sandwich hit New York City recently, and since it's designed to compete with the Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich, right down to the two--and only two--sliced pickles, we thought we'd grab both and do a head-to-head comparison. The results, after the jump....
