Exploring the Nanaimo Bar Trail in Nanaimo, British Columbia

Sweets Erin Jackson 3 comments

In Nanaimo, British Columbia (home of the Nanaimo bar), several bakeries and restaurants have put their own spin on the classic bar, creating everything from Nanaimo bar cheesecake to Nanaimo bar martinis. I took a walk (which quickly turned into a waddle) down the "Nanaimo Bar Trail" to document a dozen of the offerings. More

A Sandwich a Day: Sandos at Miura Waffle Milk Bar in Vancouver

A Sandwich a Day Erin Jackson 4 comments

Miura Waffle Milk Bar in Vancouver is doing some very interesting things to waffles. The shop sells a variety of savory and sweet waffle "sandos" derived from "sandoitchi," a Japanese word for sandwich. The Garlic Chicken Waffle Sando is stuffed with juicy garlic-spiked chicken, red miso, cabbage slaw, and a drizzle of mayo. But the meat isn't sandwiched between the two waffles as you might expect; it's cooked directly into the batter. More

Serious Sandwiches: Najib's Special at Nuba

Zach Brooks 4 comments

Cauliflower is a pretty unpopular vegetable, isn't it? I'm not a huge fan (possibly because of the cauliflower and ketchup pasta I was subjected to as a kid), and I'm not alone, due in no small part to the fact that most people boil it to death. Take that same cauliflower, deep-fry it, and serve it in sandwich form, like they do at Nuba, in downtown Vancouver, and you may see a lot more converts.... More

Serious Sandwiches: The Japadog

Zach Brooks 5 comments

While most people wouldn't think of a hot dog as a sandwich, Merriam-Webster defines a sandwich as "two or more slices of bread, or a split roll, having a filling in between." So a hot dog, in a bun, according to the dictionary is in fact a sandwich. Put that same hot dog in a bun and top it with ingredients normally found in a sushi restaurant, and you've got a Serious Sandwich. Or, as it's called in downtown Vancouver, a Japadog. Open for almost two years, Japadog is exactly the kind of hot dog stand you'd expect in Vancouver, where the population is almost one-third Asian. In a lot of ways, it's like your typical downtown hot dog... More
