Bottle Shock is the story of the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976. Also known as The Judgment of Paris, it was a blind-tasting organized to pit California wines against their French counterparts. When the judges—nine French, one British, and one American—rated the California wines best in each category, it put Napa Valley wines on the map. If you haven't seen it, Bottle Shock is a charming and funny movie with a great ensemble cast (Bill Pullman, Alan Rickman, Eliza Dushku, and Dennis Farina, among others)—one that food and wine lovers would do well in checking out (or checking out again). If Sideways didn't quench your thirst for a wine flick, look out for Bottle Shock. Based on the "Judgment of Paris" in 1976, a British wine merchant (played by Alan Rickman) travels to Napa Valley—not yet synonymous with good wine—to check out the small wine scene and is left so impressed that he decides to conduct a blind taste test between California and French wine.
