Celebrity Chefs' Secret Cravings

[Pistachio gelato: Bobby Flay's undoing. Photograph: Robyn Lee] Slashfood asks a few chefs about their guilty pleasures, and while some take the highbrow way out--Wagyu beef, Colicchio? Really?--Bobby Flay chows down on pistachio gelato, while Mario Batali can't get enough Doritos. "It has to be Doritos, though. I especially like the lime-flavored ones with chili."...

Cook the Book: 'Bobby Flay's Burgers, Fries & Shakes'

Do you ever wonder what chefs eat? You'd think that with access to a well-stocked walk-in and state-of-the-art kitchen they would eat exceptionally well, on par or better than the food that we pay for in their restaurants. You might think that it is all white truffles, foie gras, and vintage Bordeaux—but the reality is a bit bleaker. Chefs are usually too busy preparing for service to sit down to a proper meal. Days start early, end late, and there is no lunch hour. When the clock strikes 10 or 11 p.m., or later depending on what time the restaurant closes, chances are the people who've made your dinner have had nothing more than a few spoonfuls of food (to...

Bobby Flay's Grilling Tips

This week's grilling tips come from Bobby Flay, Mr. Grill himself. Though Flay is a successful chef and restaurateur, and a Food Network star (he's one of the Iron Chefs and he is of course the host of Throwdown!) he is probably more identified with grilling than any other celebrity chef. He has written three books about grilling, Boy Gets Grill, Grilling for Life, and most recently Bobby Flay's Grill It, from which these tips are taken. Flay on Gas vs. Charcoal: "I am on record many times as saying that I prefer the ease and consistency of gas grills. However, that doesn't mean that I don't use charcoal grills myself from time to time. Charcoal burns hotter than gas,...

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 55: A South Beach Burger Bash Meal Plan

"I had gone on my own South Beach Diet, for one evening at least, and came out smelling like a rose, or at the very least like a cheeseburger. " Me with Ollie Kottke Even with me sharing an entire loaf of onion confit bread with young Ollie Kottke (son of Meg Hourihan and Jason Kottke) Tuesday lunch I was down two pounds for the week, to 228, on Thursday morning, when I boarded a plane to Miami for the South Beach Wine and Food Festival. My plane arrived on time at 6:30 p.m., and after looking at and rejecting four hotel rooms, I was finally able to settle in, take a shower, and head to the famed Burger Bash....

Bobby Flay Super Bowl Menu Possibilities

When I think about which celebrity chef would have a kick-ass menu at his or her Super Bowl, my thoughts always gravitate to Bobby Flay. And why not? He's a really good cook, he's a serious sports fan, and his food definitely lends itself to football-watching on TV. So the serious eaters at world headquarters here went through all the Bobby Flay cookbooks we had in the office looking for recipes that we could easily and quickly make for our own Super Bowl parties. His chipotle-honey-glazed wings with toasted sesame seeds and green onion sound delicious even if you have to make them in the oven instead of on a grill (we know it's winter). His wild mushroom quesadillas would...

Controversy: Did Chicago Food Critic Pat Bruno Unmask Himself on 'Throwdown'?

MenuPages Chicago: "Could it be that the head restaurant reviewer for a major metropolitan newspaper decided to blow his anonymity out of the water by appearing on a highly rated, nationally aired television show featuring the signature dish of his hometown, with his cover being only the inversion of his highly recognizable name?" MP also notes Bobby Flay's praise: "'You guys are the best judges we've ever had... You guys should do this for a living.'"...

Cook the Book: Bobby Flay's Grill It!

Some Food Network stars may be just a flash in the pan, but true, well-trained and passionate celebrity chefs will always endure. Since the debut of Boy Meets Grill in 1996, Bobby Flay has stood as an example of what it means to be famous for food: he is the owner of five acclaimed restaurants, the talent behind three television shows (not to mention the food correspondent for The Early Show on CBS, and a regular guest on Iron Chef America), and a best-selling cookbook author. While many insiders and professionals scoff at culinary celebrities claiming they care more about cash than they do about cooking, Bobby has always been heralded for his innovative southwestern cuisine. This Week's Cook the...

In Videos: Bobby Flay on 'Nightline'

"We used to have this rule, my friends and I, that if we couldn't get on the first subway... we went to breakfast. And maybe that was the beginning of my food career." ABC's Nightline continues their "Platelist" series with Chef Bobby Flay. In between demonstrating recipes for Bar Americain's Gulf Shrimp and Grits and Fulton Fish Market Cioppino, he talks about being a bad high school student, his father's influence, and his earliest food memories.
