First produced by Mexican Franciscan monks of Monterey, California, Monterey Jack cheese is one of the true original American cheeses. Add to that cheese bits of chopped hot peppers (usually jalapeño), and you've got yourself pepper jack. Perfect in jalapeño poppers, bang-up on burgers, crazy-good on crackers, top-notch at topping nachos, and, uh... inquedible in quesadillas, it's the snackers' cheese par excellence. Ah, hot dogs. Meat tubes bursting with stars-and-stripes patriotism and, when they're good, a poppy snap with salty-garlicky-beefy juiciness. Even if you're not a "hot dog person" they just taste better on the Fourth. We went grocery shopping for the most nationally-available brands of all-beef franks, both skinless and with natural casing. Check out the results. More

'Consumer Reports' Doesn't Know Hot Dogs

The good folks at Consumer Reports may know cars and appliances, but apparently their tasters don't know much about hot dogs. The magazine just released its hot dog taste test results. Hebrew National came out on top. Hebrew National is a fine-tasting dog, don't get me wrong, but ever since the kosher police ruled that natural casings were not kosher, Hebrew National's dogs no longer rule. They don't have that great snap that's required of a truly great hot dog.... More
