Next time you're at the market, be wary of one-eyed, one-horned flying purple pepper eaters. Overall, they're pretty harmless creatures. It's the one-eyed, one-horned flying purple human eaters you have to watch out for. Brutal, and far less tasty.

That's quite striking. Nice pic. I guess I've been under a rock, but I've never seen a purple pepper before. Does anybody know whether they retain their vibrant color during cooking? Do they turn a sickly color? Just curious...

They do change color. We grow purple peppers in our garden. They never really sweeten up like reds and oranges. And the purple kinda fades to a greenish lavender. They're green on the inside too.

I don't know if I will look for purple peppers at the market because when I saw the beautiful picture ...I was "Ole ...I must try this!!" But at the end ...you tell me that these purple peppers are "brutal and less tasty" (what is this description's purpose?) ...and now I''m not so bananas about that. Maybe I'll buy one and I will give it to my brother to take a bite and see what happens...

i had a purple (lilac??) pepper for the first time a few weeks ago, from a farmer friend's garden. it actually wasn't that good. it tasted like a really bitter green pepper.

I found those peppers at the Ferry Building farmers market in San Francisco, and while I didn't actually purchase any, the guy selling them told me that their taste is pretty comparable to the normal red variety. I hope they show up in DC markets soon, since they're really gorgeous/unusual looking!

I would definitely agree with redhead. Even at full ripeness, the taste is like a very pungent, bitter green pepper. Not at all like a red pepper. Though, we did what Kerry did and made fajitas with red onions and purple peppers.....come to think of it, the purple in the pepper fades to almost the exact color of an overcooked red onion. They're definitely pretty, and do well in salads to add more color. Personally, too bitter for me....
