Photo of the Day: Individually-Wrapped Bananas, Freaking Us Out

20080701-individual-wrapped-bananas.jpg

Fruit should never be wrapped in a tray meant for ground beef. Especially bananas. This excessive packaging is just ludicrous, unless there are people who actually eat peels and want them super sterile. Also, who's in the back on wrap duty? An intern? Since Flickr user alison*h spotted this madness in Dundee, Scotland the grocery store started applying sticky labels directly to bananas. [via Food-Notes]

That's a lot of fail.

Super Target individually wraps EVERYTHING. I've stopped buying my veggies there because of it. I hated feeling guilty everytime I bought my individually wrapped bell pepper.

Who buys ONE banana?

Eh, that's painful to see. Bananas are prepackaged! Maybe, due to the banana crisis, they feel the need to take care of each and every banana, guarding it as one might guard a precious gem...

Further proof that we've lost our minds as a species. Sad, epic fail.

that is such a waste of labor, resources and money...shame!

Another sign of the coming apocalypse. Its amazing and sad to me that people are still so oblivious.

prepackaged produce is the number one reason i DO NOT shop at trader joe's!!!! ridiculous.

I used to live in Spanish Harlem and they did this a lot with the fruit at my local C-Town. It always kind of grossed me out!

I can't find it right now, but I've seen a photo of individually wrapped peanuts from Japan. I hope those trays are biodegradable.

Also, wrapping in plastic degrades the fruit, and makes it over-ripen and soften to quickly. It's bad all around.

Morrisons also shrinkwraps bell peppers and broccoli. And avocadoes.

Morrisons is also where I saw a coconut wrapped in the same way; shrinkwrap and a plastic tray. Ludicrous!

does anyone else find it strange that they are all priced differently...?
