Blogwatch: Netherlands' National Dish, the Raw Herring Sandwich

Raw herring is a Dutch specialty, so it's no wonder that the broodje haring, or a raw-herring sandwich, is the national dish of the Netherlands. Says Simply Sandwiches, "It's cold and a bit mushy, but has a refreshing freshness and bite from the onions and pickles that it's a pleasure to eat. It also helps that it's incredibly soft and I could probably eat it without teeth."

Actually, I like pickled herring, so that might not be bad at all!

So I'd order me some of that - hold the onions. The onions are the most heinous ingredient in that sandwich.

You want fries with that?

They're wonderful and cheap! I ate a bunch on a road trip around Holland last summer.

I'm an American, living in the Netherlands for nearly 10 years now, and I can unequivocally say..."bleh". Sometimes with pickles, more often covered with chopped onions, and rarely with a mayonnaise/dill sauce - I've tried it 3 times here and each time I wanted to cough it up fast. We have a word for it here: "slecht!"

What the heck are those pickles doing on the sandwich? I'm Dutch and in my part of the country I've never seen them with pickles. You eat them either with or without chopped unions. Preferably without the bread either, just hold them up by the tail and let them slide into your mouth.
@Boscompb: The taste is totally different from pickled herring, my mom loved pickled herring, but hated "salt" herring as we call them.

My boyfriend ate this while we were in Amsterdam and liked it. I love fish and think I'm a pretty adventurous eater, but I couldn't bring myself to try it.

@Noskos -- Those pickles look mighty suspicious! Maybe this was taken at a McDonald's in the Netherlands. Their new McHerring sandwich. :P

@Boscompb, @Noskos and @ Cassendrea:
I agree; Pickled herring rules. I keep a jar in the fridge for snacking at any time of the day. Deelish!
Also ps. have you tried it with white onion and a cream sauce over steamed potatoes? Also super fantastic-o!

Somehow the description "it's incredibly soft and I could probably eat it without teeth." does not make me want to run out and try this.
I love pickled herring though, now that as an adult that I know that the little black peppercorns floating around are not fish eyeballs, as my father told me.
