In Videos: Dumpling Battle in 'Kung Fu Panda'

videos-kungfupanda-dumplings.jpg

When I went home for July Fourth, my mom welcomed my brother and me with a delicious homemade dumpling feast. How did my mom, who probably hadn't made homemade dumplings in years, suddenly get the inspiration to whip up over 100 little meat-filled dough pouches? By watching Kung Fu Panda. Yes, a computer-animated movie about a hefty panda discovering his inner kung fu prowess drove my mom to dig into her latent memory bank of Chinese recipes.

In the most dumpling heavy scene, Po (voiced by Jack Black), whose kung fu skills are provoked by the sight of food, must battle against Master Shifu (voiced by Dustin Hoffman) to get his hands on the last dumpling. Dumplings are awesome—I can totally relate, except for the part where I'm good at kung fu. Watch the clip after the jump.

What a (surprisingly) good movie. The first thing I wanted to do after leaving the theater was EAT ASIAN FOOD. Preferably noodles and dumplings, haha. :)

But, but, but.. after all that fighting, they just toss the dumpling aside, leaving it to the ants? I know it's only a cartoon..but how wasteful!

I cringed when Master Shifu said, “I said, you are free to eat… Have a dumpling.” I thought, “What? Those are called Baozi…” Dumpling and Baozi look totally different.

Okay, knowing that he's inspired by food to go all kung fu gives me even more incentive to want to see it! It's like Chinese Food is the Matrix--you plug in, and ... hiya!

I thought the movie was pretty so-so, you know, tolerable, but this was certainly the standout scene of the whole thing.

Yeah...those are baozi. They are closed differently, have thicker skin, and generally steamed (as opposed to boiled like dumplings usually are).

Still...I would consider them similar foods.

Ah young grasshopper, if you listen carefully you'll hear the rattle of the bowl the "dumpling" lands in as its tossed aside. Never question the master, no dumplings for you... :)

If that is all it takes to get my mother to making dumplings, I need to get the bootleg stat. I can't wait for it to come out on DVD, that is just way to long of a time to go without homemade dumplings.

All that chopstick parry-ing made me nostalgic for the Kim Family dinner table.

Haha - the master is so cute when he chews. Might actually go see the film.
