Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 25: The Land of Too Much Plenty (And So Much Sharing)

20080718-icecream.jpg

Here's my dilemma. I have two completely conflicting impulses. I want to taste every delicious thing in this world, and I also want to keep control of my weight so that I can live to see my son grow old and our future grandchildren grow up. Can I succeed in doing both? Sometimes, when I'm feeling good and in control, I think the answer is yes. At other times, when there is so much food coming into Serious Eats world headquarters and when I feel the need to food-explore every morning, diet success seems like an impossible dream. This past week was an impossible dream week, and from a dieting-living perspective, it might have been saved by the other serious eaters.

The following items were delivered to the office this week:

  • Amazing pork from Martins BBQ in Nashville, Tennessee
  • Fourteen kinds of ice cream from Ice Cream Alchemy in Boulder, Colorado, ranging from the divine (yuzu grapefruit sorbet, lemon chocolate chip) to the ridiculous (lox and bagels and cream cheese, and bacon and date ice cream)
  • Seven kinds of ice cream from Ciao Bella, including a great Key lime graham cracker flavor

On top of that I brought in the following:

  • Really goood chocolate pudding with whipped cream and chocolate shavings
  • Fifteen sandwiches from the sandwich shop I am going to review next week
  • A dozen kinds of chocolate chip cookies for a mondo chocolate chip cookie post we're working on
  • Cheddar biscuits stuffed with ham and cheddar
  • A bunch of killer sandwiches from around New York, including a roast beef with fried onions on a soft roll that may be sandwich hall of fame material

There's a lot of other stuff I tasted this week, but I think you get the point. Temptation awaits me at every turn, whether I seek it out or not. I try to just taste things, but it ain't easy. What may in fact be my salvation is my gang of fellow serious eaters, who are young, hungry, and fit, and who seem to innately know how to eat in moderation. I'm trying to let them do the bulk of the eating. Maybe if I had learned how to share better growing up in a house with four growing boys I wouldn't be struggling quite so much with my weight.

The Weigh-In

Anyway, I'm hoping to stay even when I step on the scale this morning, and if I'm lucky I might even lose a pound. I was even when I stepped on the scale yesterday. So maybe I'll be OK. Here goes. Down a pound. Down with gluttony. Up with sharing.

My "goal" was always one pound. That way I didn't feel overwhelmed and my goal was achievable. Renew your goal today with even greater resolve..

You did it! Reward yourself for your success with anything other than food. I'd suggest doing something fun, memorable and amazing with your growing son. Take lots of photos!

congrats! something to also remember - by example you will be teaching your son how to eat in moderation, which is an invaluable skill to learn early! good job! btw - are we gonna hear about that bagel lox cream cheese ice cream? sounds insane and kinda ick.

I wrestle with the same issue. I love food, and exploring different places. My problems are always (a) limited stomach space (I can only eat at so many places in a given time, and (b) making sure I don't have to run out and buy larger pants.

Yup. Integrating portion control and regular exercise as life-long habits are key.

That said, I still have to remind myself that "you are what you eat" when I dip into my Chunky Monkey...

Try fructose. It satisfies hunger and gives you energy but is not converted to fat. Check out the NYT freakonomics article by Dubner and Levitt ("Does the Truth Lie Within"):

Sweet Potato Mascarpone Ice Cream???? *swoon*

I'd never be able to stay on my diet if I were in your shoes! Bless your heart.

nice! sometimes i have to remind myself that i don't have to taste everything and that i can try that tomorrow. sometimes i ignore myself all together and my taste buds win.

perhaps this has been explained before, but when you mentioned all the goodies that were delivered...were they ordered? or do you all receive random shipments each week?

Lox and bagels ice cream = the newest, best diet food. So repulsive, you won't even eat it!

God love you. That is temptation HELL. You are smart to let the "younger" staff members chow down on all of those samples, and they should thank you profusely. Good luck with tomorrow and the days that follow. Getting to your ideal weight and maintaining it while immersed in the food industry deserves an "Oscar For Outstanding Performance"!

There's really only one solution to this. Invite me to your Serious Eats world headquarters. My fat can serve as a buffer to protect you.

Good gravy...they would need a flatbed to haul me out of the offices if I worked there!

Another cheer of commiseration on your struggle...I would be in such trouble!

Good for you on passing on the goodies to those who still have young metabolisms and staying on track!

I too has eyes only for the sweet potato mascarpone ice cream.....WANT.

Be sure to try the Ciao Bella Blood Orange Sorbet and the Blackberry Cabernet Sorbet if they are in your stash. They are delicious and their nutrition profile is diet-friendly. I have four pints of the Blood Orange sorbet in my freezer.
