Salmonella Scare Hits the Big Time

You know something is news when it graces the cover of the New York Post. The main focus of the story is that the burger chains have stopped serving tomatoes on their burgers, and people are upset.
At the Mickey D's on Sixth Avenue between 21st and 22nd streets, Beata Royzman, 17, a La Guardia HS senior, winced as she bit into a cheeseburger that didn't have tomatoes. "It's disgusting," she groaned. "It would be much better with tomatoes...

Funny how the lack of a hydroponic industrial cardboard tasting tomato slice should suddenly make people realize that their McDonald's burger is disgusting.

Thank you, Simon. I had the same thought. The only thing that would really make a McD's hamburger not disgusting is to not eat it to begin with.
RichardCrystal at 3:57PM on 06/10/08
I don't feel that McDonald's is "disgusting". If you were starving and broke, that Quarter Pounder and French Fries would taste like the best damn food you've ever eaten in your life.
Getting Salmonella and explosive diarrhea -- that's disgusting.
Stepping in fresh poop with new shoes -- that's disgusting.
McDonald's is just average fast food. You get what you pay for, and it should judged as such.
FastFoodCritic at 4:27PM on 06/10/08
No, it's disgusting. It's not cheap either. It's actually very expensive.
simon at 4:54PM on 06/10/08
I just find it interesting because McDonald's cheeseburgers don't typically come with tomato on them, just ketchup, mustard and finely diced onion.
CupcakeSweetie at 6:13PM on 06/10/08
Yeah, Big Macs & QP's don't have tomatoes either, do they?
The media is making a big deal about hamburgers and Taco Bell but this will affect all of the food producers that make tomato-based products like ketchup, spaghetti sauce, salsa, canned tomatoes, etc. And what about fresh pizza sauce and fresh tomatoes at all the pizza places, local and chain?

@ Simon
Again, I know it's fast food, and I know it's McDonald's, the king of clone-like generic stuff... but what exactly about the food is disgusting to you?
Have you eaten there lately? Have you tried any of their newer products?
I'm not trying to be smart-ass... I'm honestly curious. No offense intended.
FastFoodCritic at 6:30PM on 06/10/08
Odd that there's such a fuss. I never got the point behind a tomato on a burger anyway, it tends to slide out when you bite it.
longbongsilver at 6:37PM on 06/10/08
I'd like to know what Miss Robyn Lee thinks of this tomato situation, as she is a known raw tomato hater.

Everything about McDonalds is disgusting. The concept is disgusting. The way the meat they use is raised, is disgusting. The artificial texturing agents, flavor enhancers and preservatives are disgusting. Their business practices are disgusting. And no, it doesn't taste very good either. Salty, greasy and sweet is about all they can manage in the flavor department, despite all that energy spent on the all that processing.
Of course, as a citizen of the first world I have eaten there before. Can't remember when the last time was though. If I can help it, I will never eat there again. I have and will go hungry rather than give them one more hard earned cent. Other than the tax money that each and every one of us pays that goes towards supporting them, and the other mega agri-business juggernauts who are propped up by our government's corporate welfare system. (Which by the way is why you have the perception that the food is cheap, it's subsidized.)
I don't need to try one of their latest "products" (that term is disgusting too) in order to have a very clear and well formed opinion on the topic.
simon at 9:55PM on 06/10/08
@ag3208: Oh dear...is that what I'm known for? ;_;
I don't especially like tomatoes in my burger (but this depends on the "slide factor" of the tomato in the burger, which depends on whatever else is shoved between those buns), so I say, whatevs! Or what longbongsilver said.
roboppy at 2:01AM on 06/11/08
Funny, simon is a holier than thou hippy fighting against the "man".
All fast food is in reality is a food distribution concept. He doesn't drive a car either! He rides a horse, works out of the house and homeschools too, so the rest of you need to get with the "program" if you all want to live with the same amount of virtue.
Anyway who cares, free will and all, we all go around once and if a Big Mac floats your boat more power to you, don't let the "Self superior, pat themselves on the back" crowd get you down, if they choose to deprive themselves of all that life has to offer good or bad that's on them.
On a far more disturbing level to see the degree to which society and it's denizens get thrown for a loop by something so relativly benign as Salmonella throws into stark focus how utterly screwed the vast proportion of society will be if and when something truly worthy of concern (SARS, Avian flu, small pocks, MERSA, yet to be determined) comes rolling down the pike.
After spending as much time as I do in the 3rd world I have a little message for you all in light of this tomato incident. Start taking your vitamins and steeling up folks because if think this is bad you aint seen nothing yet, that or just take some comfort in the fact that at this point in the game there isn't a darm thing you can do because you're all doomed.
Stiv61 at 6:36AM on 06/11/08
I happen to agree with Simon, and I don't feel like I'm patting myself on the back for it. It really has nothing to do with homeschooling or riding in a car. The food is tasteless (except for salt and grease), and is partly to blame for our country's obesity problem. I'm not choosing to "deprive myself" by not eating at McDonalds. I have more respect for myself than that.
RedSquirrel at 9:06AM on 06/11/08
Well, Simon and RedSquarrel... the reason I asked if he (Simon) had tried any of their latest products is because there are a couple decent ones.
One in particular was reviewed / compared to Chick-fil-A right here on SeriousEats, and they seem to think it was OK, and even had some trouble telling the difference between it, and the real Chick-fil-A, which is a damn fine fast-food sandwich.
So, you see, Simon, I would have to argue that it DOES take a bit of RECENT knowledge about a company's products to make what you refer to as... "a very clear and well formed opinion on the topic."
Anyway... it's obvious you have a serious, deeper issue with MvcDonald's besides the taste of their food, and I must assume your narrow minded statement stems from this Ronald McDonald hatred. Good luck with that.
P.S. Nice post Stiv61

Word.

I don't think it is particularly McDonalds that is the most hated. They just happen to have the largest share of fast food out there and tend to get picked on more for it. Many people eat there and are fine with it. I happen to not be one of those people. I don't eat fast food because I don't really see the point of it. It isn't exactly "food", more food-shaped stuff made from mostly processed products (for the most part). I'm not advocating everyone eating gourmet food either, I just think that there are so many better choices out there. I'm not trying to be argumentative, just representing another opinion.
RedSquirrel at 9:50AM on 06/11/08
I hear you Squirrel. :)
It was mostly aimed at Simon.

I actually joined this blog just to see what kind of logical link there is between McDonald's and homeschooling? Would the author of that comment please continue that train of thought?
