The Next Food Network Star's Lisa Garza: Love Her or Hate Her?
"She is sooo interesting to look at.... Firecracker dynamo."
—Susie Fogelson, judge and VP of marketing at Food Network
Season 4 of The Next Food Network Star premiered Sunday night, and the contestant we can't stop talking about is Lisa Garza. It's hard not to notice the Anna Wintour–esque former beauty queen who's now the co-owner of and special event planner at Suze Restaurant (her husband, Gilbert, is Suze’s executive chef). Lisa has no formal culinary training, but she has apprenticed for her chef husband for the last 15 to 16 years. Her bio gives her current age as 32, so that would make them high school sweethearts?
Lisa Garza Makes Her Entrance
Lisa Garza's 'Three C's'
Seems like there's a lot more to learn about Lisa Garza. For starters, what the heck are the "Three C's"?
In the very first challenge, the finalists must define their culinary points of view in a branding bite. Most of them are surprisingly comfortable and articulate on camera, with a couple of exceptions—Corey, the first finalist to be eliminated—and Lisa. Watch as Lisa explains the "Three C's," her culinary point of view.
"Designer dining?" Like Alton Brown, who was serving as guest judge and appears in the clip above, we were left scratching our heads.
Second Verse, Same as the First
In the second challenge, Lisa tries to explain her culinary point of view again, this time to a table full of actual Food Network stars. Alton bristles at yet the second mention of the "Three C's."
How 'Bout a Fourth C: Clarification?
Still confused? You are not alone! Thankfully, Lisa showed up as a commenter on the Food Network Addict blog to clarify the "Three C's" [emphasis added]:
COOKING EDUCATION= take the mystery out of fine dining, break it down and make it accesible [sic].
COMMUNITY OUTREACH=any one who really knows me, knows this, I overcame a very difficult and abbusive [sic] childhood to be the strong ass woman I am today. I will never forget where I came from. I will never forget what it feels like to be hopeless and in need of love. I don't throw change at the homeless, I hug them, I love them and I feed them. I am sick to death of all these beautiful celebs eating up the attention and not addressing real issues. I don't think food TV does enough to educate the public on how hard we work to feed the hoeless [sic], how many millions of dollars are raised because we donate our time, food, and service to charity events, sometimes, during the busiest time of our year.
The only reason I agreed to be on the show was because I want to use the attention and possible celeb status to promote my purpose for living, to feed the homeless, care for impoverished children and make a damn difference in this shitty ass selfish world. I give a large ammount [sic] of my personal income to an organization that feeds and cares for impoverished children. Divas have hearts too, big ones.
CULINARY CRAFTS= how to's for building a buffet table, home made gifts, arts and crafts that relate to cooking in some way. I want a Martha Stewart type show where I can show the public how to get high dollar presentation on a budget.
There's something about Lisa Garza that's going to keep us watching. From what we've seen so far, she brings a much-needed rubbernecking factor to an otherwise dull line-up. The question is, will we grow to love her, or love to hate her?

As a member of the Facebook group "I judge you when you use poor grammar," the excerpts above prohibit me from reading the actual blog or perusing her Facebook page.
Her goals may be admirable, but a quick spell-check would help her cause more.
suthungirl at 3:43PM on 06/05/08
She's irritating as all get-out, which means she'll be on the show for several episodes, at least. That's how competition shows seem to go. I can't get over how pleased with herself she was over cooking "in a beautiful dress and heels." True, she's pretty, but in a harsh, scary way, like a Romulan.

There's alot of starving people in India.....

On the plus side, "Feed the hoeless" may just be my favorite quote-of-the-week!
suthungirl at 3:48PM on 06/05/08
Obnoxious, self absorbed, self centered, egotistical has been. Please gag me with a spoon. Her "main mission" is NOT for the down trodden, but rather one of self promotion, the glamorization of stilletos in the kitchen, couture aprons and a must have "Vulcan" crown. Surely the Food Network can find another clown for entertainment purposes.
Boscompb at 3:49PM on 06/05/08
I think she'll do well for herself if TFN continues with the "bewbies you love to hate" formula.

Do you think this sounds familiar?.........Remember Jim and Tammy Faye Baker.................Egads!
"My sole purpose in living is to build a multi-million dollar lifestyle and retail food company dedicated to funding programs that effect change in the lives of the less fortunate and give hope to the hopeless and forgotten. Nothing would bring me more joy than to have a farm and orphanage on the beach in the Yucatan. My ultimate dream is to one day build a beautiful haven for children needing love, hope, encouragement and promise. This is my life’s calling, the meaning for my existence, the fire that burns inside of me, that “thing” that compels me to do more, to do better, to never accept less than my absolute best, to never stop, until the beautiful day I see my maker and hear him say, well done my good and faithful servant.
“The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord” - Isaiah & Jesus"

someone make her shut up, please. i really have problems with this type of personality. i doubt she is even capable of realizing how transparent she is (generally attention whores don't). good call on the bakers.

Boscompb,
I was thinking more of this past year's crap, I mean crop, of Presdential contenders.

Yeah.... ""bewbies you love to hate" formula." seems to deter me from even watching reality television. (Except Ramsey, he's wicked)
I'm sorry to those who are fans, but I find her really annoying; since you're asking I guess she could grow on me--but I would have to be able to tolerate her in the first place, right?

The woman needs to learn about hyphens.
For example,
shitty-ass selfish world
means something completely different than
shitty ass-selfish world

"feed the hoeless" that totally made me "LOL".
I'm afraid they'll keep her around longer because people hate her, which means ratings, but let's all keep our fingers crossed in hopes that Alton pulls some strings and gets her sent home somehow... after she slips and hits her head of course.

Wow, her restaurant is only 15 minutes from me. Never heard of it, or her. And speaking as someone from Dallas, Texas, born and raised, she's not 'typical' of our people. Trust me on this. :)

Heck, I might have to go check out her restaurant now. I will bring my camera. You think they will let me in wearing my Chick-fil-A T-Shirt?
I've been shy about criticizing New Yorkers (mostly because I'm terrified they might eat me in their next fancy recipe) but I have no problem with one of my own. :)

I can't stand this woman, or her stupid heels! High heels and loose, China-doll haircuts (maybe it's a wig?) have no business in any kitchen.
OK, I admit it. My nickname in culinary school was, "The Hair Nazi," because I even made the occasional media crew tie back their hair. I kept a big bag full of covered elastic pony tail ties in my locker just to pass out to visitors. I mean, finding hair in food is unnecessary and just plain nasty.
As you watch the show, know that all the loose hair is driving me mad!
Calichef at 3:30AM on 06/06/08
I can't stand the way she runs around the kitchen like a freak, I'm waiting for the train to wreck.
I also pray I never hear about the Three C's again, if Alton Brown tells you to drop it, you should probably listen!
I must admit I do hope she comments more, I am enjoying laughing at the grammar errors.

When she was first coming in and all the other contestants were snickering, I felt kind of bad. Then she talked about her so-called "vision" (and how it related to TNFNS?!?) and I had no more pity. Wow. wow wow wow.
It'll be interesting to see how long FN keeps her around. Perhaps she would boost ratings (I might watch the show some more JUST to see what does!)

Lighten up, folks! Lisa is a beautiful woman with an upbeat personality. Many people cannot deal with that for some reason. All she needs is some experience in TV and she'll be just fine. The whole show would be a snoozefest without her. Funny that many of the Foodnetwork stars are as phoney as people can become, including some that criticized Lisa.
I like her style and hope that she wins. A feast for the eyes too!
bbshoo at 8:58PM on 06/08/08
Self-absorbed does not seem to give Lisa her due. She is the Super Bounty of self absorption - to the point of characature. Are we sure she is not Sandra Bullock in a bad wig paying back on some bet gone wrong?
I felt sorry for poor Corey the comedienne who was at the bottom of the heap with Lisa and got the heave ho. Corey seemed like she was on the wrong mix of meds or something. She really was a downer. When your schtick is being funny you should play the role. I am sure the casting people were disappointed in Corey, but I imagine they are very pleased that Lisa is living up to their expectations for someone people will despise but also discuss ad nauseum.

One of my favorite quotes from "Steel Magnolias" applies perfectly to this woman:
"An ounce of pretention is worth a pound of manure!"
I cannot STAND this woman and the sooner she's gone, the better (IMHO)!
Cataroo at 12:03PM on 06/09/08
You people need to get lives...she's just some chick on a reality show not worthy of either the venom nor the attention. Geez....
onedrummer at 2:17PM on 06/09/08
I have to say that reading these comments is ten times more entertaining than the show itself. . .
I think that this woman is the heiress apparent to Rachael Ray, the queen of annoying food tv.
maryg100 at 2:20PM on 06/09/08
BTW this forum needs an edit function...I forgot to add an n to the beginning of either (or to take one off of nor).
onedrummer at 2:23PM on 06/09/08
No one on the show grated my nerves like Kevin. He referred to Mac & Cheese in a box as "white trash" in an interview I read a few weeks back. He has also been a pampas ass in many other ways on the show. I think in both episodes he made some comment about being the total package. Apparently baking is not part of his package cuz, man, he sucked at rolling those baguettes. I'm glad he is gone.
I did not care for Lisa during week one. She reminded me of a woman I knew in Nashville. Despite having gone to high school and college in Tennessee and being born in Kentucky she told everyone she was from Dallas because she lived there for 2 years. She, too, was self-absorbed and her image was more important than anything. I guess Lisa brought too many bad memories so I immediately wanted her gone.
In week two, Lisa took the judges comments to heart and actually became more likable. Her new approach, fine dining with beautiful accents or something similar is much better than babbling for five minutes. Lisa is very attractive but right now my favorite is still Kelsey; she has personality and looks without being fake.
rebdawg at 2:50PM on 06/09/08
rebdawg is right, in my opinion--Lisa was a lot better last night than in her intro. I actually began thinking that she could be interesting on her own show. After all, she's no more over the top than Miz Paula...and I do like the concept of "Beautiful Basics".

Thank u.
annien at 3:55PM on 06/09/08
Which one is the blond that Sandra Lee liked? She's as fake as they come. And it just goes to show how fake she is -- SANDRA LEE the QUEEN of PRETENTIOUSNESS liked her!

OK - I came in here to see if anyone else sees an Oompah-Loompah when Lisa is on camera.....why is she orange??! That Texas sun must be something else....
And I'm still laughing at the comparison to Parker Posey's character in "Best In Show".....

I think Lisa is a babe, and obviously she can cook too. So what if she can't spell, even our President, (also a Texas resident), and someone I have a great amount of respect for, occasionally has a difficult time with his vocabulary. So give the high - heeled hottie a break, and a dictionary, hey, Martha Stewart likes her! I dig you too Lisa, I hope you win! I'll keep watching, good luck Lisa, I hope I get to see you on your own Food Network Program.
weljwm at 7:55PM on 06/19/08
Ok, I like Lisa. Yes, she's crazy. She is kind of a bot, but not the ultra-ray-of-sunny-D that Kelsey is. Lisa's quirkiness I can enjoy. Now, who wasn't won over when she wore those Wilma Flintstone rocks around her neck?
AgentSpooky at 5:01PM on 06/27/08
Lisa is fabulous. Those that judge a book by the cover often miss the best reads. My eight yearold daughter wrote her a fan letter. Lisa wrote her a beautiful personal response that has made daughter skip around the house for days. Shame on you shallow narrow minded people.
julie5050 at 7:48PM on 06/28/08
For me, it's a love/hate relationship with Lisa. I really like her when she's off-camera. She seems more natural and less-robotic. When she's on-camera, doing the competitions, she seems so.. programmed. I really don't know if I could stand to watch a show like that. I also didn't like how she snubbed Kelsey in the 6th episode. I understand that it's a competition, but I don't see how anyone can just ignore someone like that. Right in front of their face.
All in all, I don't think I would be displeased if Lisa won. She's really got potential. She just needs to work on being more herself on camera.
Tonks at 11:00PM on 07/07/08
This week's episode proves one thing. That all reality shows are first and foremost "shows," and decisions are made by judges and producers based on entertainment value and not the merits of the contestants. How else to explain that Lisa Garza is moving on (left alone finishing third) after her total train wreck in the Rachel Ray challenge? First, she totally sidestepped the spirit of the challenge by steamrolling over that poor little Brownie. "You will eat horseradish cream sauce and like it." (Favorite moment: when she tried to explain to the kid what horseradish cream sauce is by relating it to remoullade. Huh?) What 11 year wants to eat steak with horseradish? Not to mention that on camera she offered the audience a total lie, claiming that the girl had told her she liked horseradish. I know this is not on the scale of Jag lying about his military career, but you would think that after last season's debacle they would not want a Food Network Star who so freely plays fast and loose with the truth. As for her on camera performance, no matter how much you blame the editing, there is no denying that she froze, and stood there with a zombie grin while RR had to jump in and save the show. She admitted to being intimidated by RR. Is that someone with the confidence and inner strength to host their own show? Then came the judging. What becomes more apparent each week is the total lack of consistency. Shane, who was at least honest enought to admit he has no experience relating to little kids, is raked over the coals for not interacting more with his Brownie. But at least he listened when she said her favorite was ham and incorporated that into his recipe. Lisa made she wanted to make, and I think the Brownie was terrified not to agree with everything she said. (The whole kid thing was just dumb. How often is that going to happen on the Food Network. This is not "The Next Nickelodeon Star.") Then, the judges tell Adam and Kelsy they may not have the required food knowledge or authority. But after admitting that Shane has great knowledge and technique and makes excellent food, they find a way to hold it against him, but deriding his skills as coming from "book learning." Not only that, but he has the gall to love French food without having been to France. Huh? How elitist. Is being a world traveller now a requirement? Before the Food Network picked her up Rachel Ray's big claim to fame was that she had worked at a hotel and on a local TV station in upsate New York. Hardly France either.) What it comes down to is that the contestants are characters in a show, and the producers decided that Shane had the least to offer in terms of entertainment value as a character. All the others contestants have their easily definable personas and built-in audiences, love em or hate em. I think originally they thought Shane was going to be the young whiz kid character, but he's too laid back for that (to his credit) and can come across as bland. So despite being the best chef on the show and a seasoned TV performer (having been a child actor) he's gone. This year's version of NFNS isn't the train wreck we had last year. (Defining moment of last year's show was when Alton Brown, Gold bless him, said in genuine frustration,"Can't we get rid of everyone and start over." ) But the general mediocrity really has to make the network evalute this whole concept. When your shining light from four seasons worth of shows is the annoying, endlessly promoting, TGI Friday's pitch man Guy Fierri then something is seriously wrong. Of the remaining contestants Adam is the only one who can bring something new to the FN that they don't already have - a young, hip, urban everyman, sort of Seinfeld in the kitchen. It's a demographic that the network currently doesn't reach. He may not be the most qualified in terms of food knowledge or experience, but remember, the Food Network, like The Next FN Star, is all about entertainment.

Ugh, Lisa is awfull. I haven't been able to stand her since the begining. I love this show and have watched them all including The next Iron chef, (LOVE Symon, btw) and I WOULD NEVER EVER watch a show with her. She's rude, demading, bossy, overly emotional and I'm sorry, but I hate her look. In a package, she's a complete bitch to her competitors and judges. I don't understand why she is still there and they got rid of Kelsey and Shane. If she wins I will have no choice to believe it was a rigged compititon.

If Liza Godzilla wins, I will never watch. I thought Rory was irritating last year but this rich you know what makes me ill with her "Pucci Shoes." I feel sorry for her child (who she says has a sophisticated palate) because the poor child probably has never tasted any childhood foods. I don't like people who look down their noses at others and that exactly what she does!

I finally figured it out....Star Trek Romulan hair do. Mormon cult dressmaker. Even if she can cook & talk on camera at the same time the rest of the package is just too darn distracting, PERFECT for Food Network!

I signed up just to comment here! I watch this show with my husband and though I complain about Lisa every week, I feel I need another area to whine about why she is STILL there. Does anybody else agree that she:
1. Often looks like she is about to completely LOSE it? She's often crying and almost always has a tense and disagreeable look on her face. I can't image her softening up on any show.
2. Has an obnoxious "culinary point of view"? "Beautiful basics"? PLEASE.
3. Seems like she will be a complete diva?
She might have cooked up some great tasting food, but she's consistently had a poor camera performance. What else is more important on a TV show? I am so frustrated she's still there! (My life is otherwise very simple and that is why I choose to obsess over insignificant things like this. :)
Maegan82606 at 12:35PM on 07/21/08
I signed up just to comment on here myself. I don't know what in the world these judges are thinking. I have a hard time watching her on this show let alone tune into a weekly show with someone like her. We don't need another Martha Stewart. Someone on the panel needs to get a clue what people will watch and I can't imagine it will be her unless that is what they are hoping. They want a winner that will have such poor ratings they can cancel them after only a few shows.
mommacomet at 10:02PM on 07/21/08
I think Lisa is a fine lady. I sense the sour grapes coming primaririly from women who simply cannot measure up to her. And who know it. Too bad. I'm glad Lisa made it to the final and I really wanted her to win. Her restaurant in Dallas is excellent, BTW. I drove from Austin with my GF just to check it out and we were not disappointed.

I'm glad Lisa didn't win. She seems to have more of a passion for fashion than for food. Even though she was prompted in her exit interview, she stated how she was wearing a Carolina Herrera dress. Anyway, I wouldn't have watched her show because she annoyed the heck out of me during the entire run of this season. I'm glad Aaron won, although Adam could have won and I would have been just as happy - I'd watch either one of them. They both seem very personable, are nice to look at, and bring something special to the screen.
MLMLW at 2:55AM on 07/29/08
TO BBSHOO about Lisa Garza --- "women who simply cannot measure up to her? Are you kidding??? Why would any of us intelligent women want to measure themselves up to somebody that acts the way she does? She comes across on tv as self-absorbed, annoying, anal, and intense (and not in a good way). Yeah, she may be pretty - nobody is doubting that. Her food may be the most wonderful, but that alone doesn't make a Food Network Star. Most of the comments are about her persona. Nobody wants to look at a Food Network star who doesn't come across as warm and endearing, of which she seems to have neither personality trait! Alot of times, she seemed to be more concerned about how she looked and making sure she wore a designer dress & shoes. Did you not hear what she said about Aaron's win? I quote, "I'm so glad Aaron won - he needed this..." What? How about "He deserved this win". And if she had won, what would she have said about herself? "Well, I do deserve this to prove that I can cook, blah, blah, blah (snore.....). So, next time you decide to tell us women that most of us don't measure up, think again. We're not even trying because we don't wish to be stepford wives, thank you! No sour grapes here!!
MLMLW at 3:21AM on 07/29/08
The anonymity on the Internet is a dangerous thing. You all vent all of your anger on the world and your jealousy through a public anonymous forum where no one else can judge you. You are all cowardly and horrible people to be capable of publicy bashing anyone to this extreme.
The Food Network really needed a female personality with actual talent and a good fashion sense. Someone that makes cooking look attractive and modern again. Someone that makes REAL FOOD. I'm so mad that we're going to have yet another show on how to make unhealthy, easy meals like Mac and Cheese or lasagna. Go ahead and feed your obsesity America.
mischadehart at 1:49PM on 07/30/08
I have to wonder, why would any chef wear designer anything, high heels? Nooooooooo, that is insane!! At least wear a chefs coat to protect clothing. Her hair reminds me of the child book by Beverly Cleary, Beazus and Ramona, she looks like the little sister Ramona, exact same hair style (bowl cut). Some of her dresses remind me of June Cleaver of Leave It To Beaver, to the hilt, Lisa even wears a pearl necklace that was Barbara Billingsby's trademark on the show. I was in shock (and delight) when Paula Deen, PAULA DEEN people hated her mac & cheese, come on Paula deep fries butter balls, for her to HATE Lisa's mac & cheese? But who I was so happy to be eliminated was Kelsey, her squeaky voice made me want to run (not walk ) to the nearest bar around and drink till the ringing in my ears stop!!
.

I also signed up just to comment. Although my choice was Aaron, and I did not care for Lisa, I'm kind of disappointed in the venom that is being spewed her way by the bloggers. Between viewing comments from blogs on a few sites, it's frightening how many people are downright hating! Poor Aaron appears to be really getting it from so many sides which is okay if it's an opinion; but so much of it's racial epithets! viewers, it's disgraceful! Let's stop such hatred and nastiness because we don't agree with a choice, or with what a person should look like. Let's try to embrace diversity, and Ha! Ha! ,women cooking in the kitchen with high heels and expensive blouses! Lighten up, good people !
sassy at 12:19PM on 08/03/08
I think Lisa is a beautiful, intelligent young woman who is knowledgable about food and is an excellent cook. I have to say that I am surprised at how nasty so many people are when posting about her. It kind of freaks me out that a cooking show host contest can generate so much poison.
I commend all the contestants. Some have far more stage presence than others, but all brought something unique to the show and all, it appears, are good cooks.
It may not be commonplace to see ladies wearing designer clothes and shoes in the kitchen, but the lady turned out wonderful food without getting a spot on her clothing. We could all take a lesson from her. It isn't a sin to look nice in the kitchen (or anywhere for that matter). Beats the heck out of jeans and flip flops all the time.
