Meet & Eat: Gordon Mark, Serious Eats Intern
Editor's note: I always love finding out more about the folks behind the websites I read. And more than a few of you must, too, because we've had a number of readers suggest doing "Meet & Eats" with the people of Serious Eats. We actually started doing this back in March with SE intern Emily Koh, and now we're going to pick up where we left off with SE intern Gordon Mark. Gordon is the man behind the awesome NYC Chinatown guides on Serious Eats New York, he's our resident video game guru, and he's the guy keeping you up to date on what to watch on food TV. So without further ado, here's Gordon! —Adam
Name: Gordon Mark
Location: Brooklyn Represent!
Occupation: Chuch website webmaster, intern at Serious Eats, procrastinator

Favorite comfort food? A cha siu bao (roast pork bun). It's quick, cheap, warm, and tasty. I bite into that and I'm comforted. Actually, baked goods in general are my comfort foods.
Guilty pleasures? Fatty food: Fat roast pork, pork rinds, yakitori chicken skins, or the fatty parts of a prime rib. They're sooo good and sooo unhealthy. It's a good thing I'm skinny—for now.
Describe your perfect meal. I think it would simply be a home-cooked dinner of dishes of beef and veggies with my family.
What food won't you eat? Shellfish. I don't have an allergy to them; I just don't like the taste.
What's an unexplored food you'd like to try? French cuisine is unexplored for me. I'm curious about how the food tastes.
Favorite food person? It would Martin Yan of Yan Can Cook fame. I watched that show a lot when I was kid.
When did you first realize you were a serious eater? About two years ago, when I realized that I hadn't really taken advantage of living in New York with all the stuff there is to do. So I started going on "adventures" in the city. And since there's a multitude of places to eat, I naturally gravitated toward exploring them.
What do your family and friends think of your food obsessions? My family thinks it's weird, especially when I ask them to wait before eating so I can take pictures of the food. My friends think it's cool and come to me for recommendations.
Favorite food sites or blogs? My favorite blogs would be The Girl Who Ate Everything and Food in Mouth. Robyn's blog [TGWAE] is the first food blog I came across back when I was looking for information about food in New York. I like the photos on Food in Mouth and that's a current favorite. Also, while New York Daily Photo isn't exactly a food blog, he often blogs about NYC-related food places. And he does quite a thorough write-up for each day's subject. I also enjoy reading the New York Times Wednesday food section.

Gordon: Do you prefer the steamed cha siu bao or the baked one? I'm apparently a n00b or a gweilo, in that I really love the baked kind.

I can't wait for Gordon's next Chinatown post!

I am Gordon's biggest fan...I think he is one of the most thorough reporters on Serious Eats! He is a no-nonsense blogger and I have eaten at several of his suggestions. Rock on Gordon!

It's happening, we're eating each other now, even the S.E. editors are not safe.
Seriously though, Gordon seems like a great guy. Nice to learn more about him.

@FFC: OK. Yes. Admittedly it's a goofy name for this feature. As the guy who came up with it, I plead guilty. But isn't "Meet & Eat" (a play on "meet and greet," obvs) so much better than the more prosaic "Q&A: Gordon Mark"?
Adam Kuban at 10:07PM on 06/16/08
Heheheee... yes, of course, it's brilliant.
You know I'm playing. :)
FastFoodCritic at 11:20PM on 06/16/08
Hey, I know Gordon is a gamer, how about you Adam?
You guys play any multiplayer XBOX360, PS3, PC?
FastFoodCritic at 11:21PM on 06/16/08
@FFC: I know better than to head down those roads. If it involves a screen, I'm prone to becoming addicted to it. I have a hard enough time pulling away from the laptop (Mac, so no gaming there) and the TV. I have a Wii and a Nintendo DS, but I only have a couple games for each (Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Sports for Wii and Zelda and Mario Kart DS for the DS). I have a hard enough time getting things done without the extra distraction of GTA or a multiplayer first-person shooter, as fun as they are.

I need a good place to buy zongzi.
fritesandfries at 9:13AM on 06/17/08
@ Everybody: Thanks for the love!
@ fritesandfries: I don't know where the best jongzi is; there are just so many and sporadic places to get them from. You can find zongzi sold from the steamed food carts, random people selling them on the street, or in restaurants and supermarkets.
Personally I do like the ones from Ho Won Bakery on Hester and Elizabeth. But I'm not sure if they are the best.
Hmm I might add this as something to write about in my next Chinatown post.
Gordon Mark at 11:12AM on 06/17/08
I was reading this post and realized I would have answered about 90% of the questions exactly the same. I guess Asian foodies have the same tastes in food and in lifestyles.
Gordon, you da man! Keep the great Chinatown posts coming.
victorylow at 12:52PM on 06/17/08
Hey Gordon,
Keep up the good work on these Chinatown posts! Are you going to do a comprehensive post on dim sum the way you did for bakeries and noodles?
foodinmouth at 1:28PM on 06/17/08
@ foodinmouth: Yeah but I haven't found any exceptional dim sum places in Manhattan's Chinatown so far. Most of the good dim sum I've had has been in Brooklyn and Queens. You got any recommendations?
Gordon Mark at 5:15PM on 06/17/08
Gordon, I would gladly go on a zongzi quest so I can blog about it. Sadly, I'm limited due to the lack of vegetarian options...this sounds like a weekend adventure task.
fritesandfries at 11:07AM on 06/19/08
Gordon...love ya...but "bottom line"!!!!!
Spell-check, spell-check, spell-check!!! You don't earn any points for "chuch."
If you're gonna write, and you don't know how to spell - spell-check!!
