Real Girls Eat Whatever They Want
In response to Jessica Simpson's meat-lovin' t-shirt—now available through the 23rd from Primehouse New York—PETA came up with "Top Five Reasons Only Stupid Girls Brag About Eating Meat." It's nothing we haven't heard from PETA before; the reasons are generally valid warnings about breast cancer and the environment, couched in PETA's typical propaganda rhetoric. But reason number four, "Meat will make you fat", is just plain offensive—especially since the post described Simpson as best known for "her ability to proportionately fill out daisy dukes" and expressed hope that "the upcoming 'Jessica Simpson's Intimates' line comes in plus sizes."
Excuse me, PETA, but whether we choose to eat a nice juicy steak or a big bowl of rice and beans, "real girls" don't all have to look like (rumored vegetarians) Kate Moss or Avril Lavigne. [via Grub Street]

As a vegetarian, I kind of resent the Kate Moss/Avril Lavigne comment. Not all of us ditch meat in hopes of being skinny.
On the other hand, I really, REALLY dislike PETA. They give vegetarians/vegans a bad name. But I guess it's like in politics...you have the extremists that go over the top and create stereotypes, and then you have the moderate/keep-to-oneself types that think what they want and let others do the same.
I suppose my philosophy is 'eat & let eat." The way I see it is the less meat I eat, the more for others. Also, there's plenty of people that dislike veggies, so hey! more for me!!

I hate to say this about anybody, especially another Texan, but Jessica Simpson is as dumb as a rock. She probably doesn't even know what "MEAT" is, or where it comes from.
Remember, she thought Chicken of the Sea was actual CHICKENS from the SEA.
Look at poor Tony in the background on the photo, with his head down, as Jessica stares straight at the camera. Haha... so perfect.
And thankfully, they are broken up now, so Tony can focus on getting the Cowboys to the Super Bowl next year.

As an intelligent human being, I resent Jessica Simpson being allowed to speak.

When is everyone going to realize that it's just as pointless to judge someone for not eating meat (that is, implying she's not a "real girl" or that she is obsessed with being skinny) as it is to judge someone for eating meat?
I swear, PETA's actions are so embarrassing that sometimes I wonder if they haven't been funded by the Beef Councils to make vegetarians look bad. Their tactics are so often sexist, inflammatory, and misguided that they take animal rights several steps backward with every move.

Bah, both sides are equally stupid, and I can't say either surprises me. Jessica Simpson thought she was eating the wings of buffalo, and PETA would throw a person under a bus to save their dog.
It reminds me of the whole debate a year ago over the Times story that said women order steak on dates to attract men. What if I actually want to eat a salad???

Oh for christ's sake... I'm so sick of this kind of thing.
However, I want that shirt.

Even as a vegetarian, I rarely agree with the methods of PETA. I feel they are unnessessarily confrontational and strident most times. Being vegetarian (at least for me) is about being at peace with nature AND humanity. It's about tolerance, acceptance, and inclusion, not antagonism and judgement. There's too much of that in society already as it is!
Acts that divide, rather than unite -- by either side of any debate -- are the REAL problem. It's time we celebrate the things that make us alike rather than emphasize the things that make us different.
No matter our color, size, sex, religion, sexual orientation -- or any other artificial "difference" -- we are all of the same race, the HUMAN race, and our humanity is only increased by the wonderful animals who bless our lives. If we respect all people as we respect ourselves, and respect the animals who share our "space", we will be on the way to turning the world around.
Sorry to sound so preachy, but those are my beliefs. tolerance and respect is the key. If those things are freely given, then, I say live and let live to the rest.

that is a stupid shirt both for it's privileging of meat-eating and the reinforcement of gender roles that it's advertising. eat meat or don't eat meat all you want, but why cloak it under a rhetoric of what makes someone a "real man" or a "real woman"? i always get pretty irritated with the assumption that men are SUPPOSED to eat fatty, meaty foods and women and SUPPOSED to eat yogurt and strawberries; food, especially delicious food, transcends ALL social roles -- sexuality, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, creed, nationality, etc.!! food is a great unifier! why gender it?

Ahh, FastFoodCritic...The demise of Tony and Jessica's "romance" was but a hiccup. That photo was taken within the past two weeks. Hold off on booking a hotel in Tampa for February 1. :(
I still can't believe she ever uttered the words "I didn't know buffaloes had wings" or something to that effect.
holdthemayo at 9:23AM on 06/21/08
The words "real" in general appearaing across JS' chest I find very ironic, in all of my vegetarian huffiness. Because Jessica Simpson is just SO natural looking.
HeartofGlass at 10:17AM on 06/21/08
The slogan is necessary. Somebody has got to challenge the vegetarian conspiracy against girls.
Even if it weren't in response to this shirt, PETA and the rest of them would continue to prey on the body image insecurities of teenage girls.
Don't eat animals, they're made of FAT and you are what you eat, fatty. Plants don't have FAT*, they have oils (never mind that they're pretty much the same thing),so if you don't want to be FAT, you'd better start eating them tubby. Or just don't eat anything.>>
I don't know if the vegetarian community is conscious of it, but it depends on this sort of propaganda. Even if it is damaging, it increases enrollment which is necessary for their community's survival as other vegetarians come back to their senses and realize that meat is good and a little bit is not going to kill anybody (or make them fat).
They have evolved to keep membership by perpetuating amongst them the idea that they can never go back because somehow vegetarianism damages the systems in your body that digest meat. They don't tell you that up front.
So you jerks at PETA, keep telling girls that if they eat meat they'll get ginormous and have to cut their breasts off. But you'd better be prepared for the world to figure out that you are full of crap.

Real?
The shirt said "real"?
Is Jessica Simpson real? I have no proof of that.
foodvox at 11:50AM on 06/21/08
Real girls can eat steaks or tofu, or both, depending on their mood.
You couldn't find examples of more than alleged Hollywood vegetarians? Really? There are high-profile vegetarian athletes, too. Tell me that they all look like Kate Moss.
I eat vegetarian, and I have to say that I've yet to meet a vegetarian or vegan who agrees with PETA anti-feminist, hyperbolic tactics. I hate the recent idea, perpetuated by books like "Skinny Bitch," that vegetarianism/ veganism is some sort of weight loss plan. Oreos are vegan. That should say it all.
KarynMC at 2:48PM on 06/21/08
Screw PETA. screw them and their sexist anti-badonkadonk ways. I'm not sure that there's an organization out there that I *wished* so much I could get in line with that has *ever* pissed me off as much as PETA has over the years.
I'm "real".
I love animals.
I was a vegetarian for years.
I'm not anymore.
Still love animals.
I eat meat and I like it. I try and buy the most local humanely raised/slaughtered meat I can find.
Yeah, the shirt's pretty silly, but so are most of the tees in my collection.
The whole "skinny bitch" thing also saddens me greatly. But, If eating meat guarantees me a tuchus like Jessica Simpson's, then pass the chops.
(Unrelated: in my opinion, Oreos took a big downturn flavor-wise when they took out the lard. Sorry, but it's true.)

@holdthemayo
Damn, you're correct. They are still together. :(
FastFoodCritic at 4:34PM on 06/21/08
Alas, PETA's response didn't have the saving grace of being funny. What a shame to miss a chance to show that they're smarter...
