In Videos: Dickson Despommier Interviewed on 'The Colbert Report' About Vertical Farming

Stephen Colbert interviews Columbia University professor Dickson Despommier about how growing food in vertical towers could be the answer to the food crisis. Vertical farming, which uses hydroponics technology, allows for better control of the growing environment and puts food within the city limits, cutting down on food transportation costs... "Plus, it's pleasantly phallic," adds Colbert. Watch the video after the jump.

The biggest "food crisis" is that too many people eat too much of it.

Actually I think SOME of the people eat too much of it, not leaving enough for those who really need it.

Chia-blimp!

Well, I don't know if they are actually eating it. There's a lot of food waste that happens. Even so, at some point with the rising human population, there probably won't be enough land to support generating the food we eat. Thus needing to go vertical. As in I'm pretty sure that we are not going to be able to prevent going past carrying capacity.

Most people are largely ignorant of the massive amount of food politics occurring in this country and how it affects what we think is normal or acceptable food. The vertical farms idea is a great one that can help the stalemate that's currently happening with the state of "traditional" agriculture.

Supporting the idea as consumers is the most important step we can take! See how you can help. Also for more information on vertical farms in general Despommier's website can be found here.
