Cook the Book: 'Screen Doors and Sweet Tea'

Book Cover This week's Cook the Book selection, Screen Doors and Sweet Tea, brings to life the people, landscape, and traditions of the Mississippi Delta. Born and raised outside Yazoo City, author Martha Hall Foose left her southern roots to attend the prestigious École Lenôtre pastry school in France. She returned five years ago—"homesickness brought me back." Today she lives on her family's farm in Tchula, Mississippi, and serves as the executive chef at the Viking Cooking School.

The dishes in Screen Doors and Sweet Tea marry southern charm with contemporary flair. Of course, there are classic recipes for fried chicken, biscuits, and gumbo. But there are also newfangled creations such as Catfish Ceviche, Sweet Potato Dumplings, and Cantaloupe Daiquiris. In addition, Foose shares poignant and hilarious tales about her home—don't miss the one on page 66 about the homemade mayonnaise contest.

Either a really good margarita on the rocks or fresh lemonade with fruit in it.
While I am loving the cooler weather here, I am almost ready for the heat that makes you really crave the icy drinks.

Nothing like freshly squeezed lemonade, with or without vodka.

any kind of iced/frozen coffee beverage..

It's definitely got to be sweet tea, made the authentic way, with real sugar stirred into still-hot tea and cooled down with a pitcherful of ice cubes.

sweet tea with lots of ice and a lemon wedge.

@bobcatsteph3... me too! I love fresh squeezed tart lemonade with vodka. That's one of my favorite drinks for any season. ;)

I also like the girlie mudslides that come in the half gallon pre-boozed bottle, which I make less girlie by adding extra spiced rum, into a blender with lots of ice until smooth... like a leaded chocolate milk almost. ;)

Oh, no question - if you have the copper mugs, it's gotta be a Moscow Mule. Nothing is more refreshing than icy cold condensation dripping off your ginger beer/vodka/lime wedge-filled copper mug!

Sweet Tea! My grandma made a fresh pitcher everyday and we'd sit in the glider and drink it and watch the cars go by on the blacktop.

If I'm having BBQ, it's sweet tea -- otherwise, a salty dog is summertime fave!

Homemade tart, very cold lemonade

fresh, cold, home-made lemonade: no contest.

lemonade, tea, vodka

I agree: fresh-squeezed, ice-cold lemonade.

My dad's sweet tea with lemon, hands down.

Just plain, cold water for me.

Iced tea--the only real thirst quencher other than water.

I'm torn between iced tea and lemonade. Love them both.

Sweet tea! My Grandma made a pitcher everyday and we'd sit in the glider, drink it and count the cars passing by on the blacktop road.

Seltzer water + a little apple juice + a spoonful of tamarind concentrate, well-mixed and poured over ice = sour and sweet and fizzy and mmmm!

Iced Tea, Lemonade or Cold Beer.

My dad makes homemade lemonade. It always makes me think of childhood summers!

Nothing beats an ice cold glass of Savingnon Blanc on the back deck after work. Relaxation at it's best.

Iced Tea, Lemonade, Wine, Gin & Tonic, Frozen Margarita and my newly discovered affinity for Beer.

mint iced tea, with or without a shot of bourbon :)

lemonade, sometimes strawberry flavor

Meyer lemonade, with mint and kumquats = summer blissfulness

Lemonade or raspberry iced tea.

Homemade jalapeno soda!

Sounds like a great cookbook! My favorite summertime drink is iced lemonade. Thank you.

sun tea, iced

Gotta be lemonade.

Iced Sun Tea w/ Lemon and Stevia -- I live on the stuff all summer.

definitely salty lassi - tart arab yogurt thinned with water and blended with ice and a ton of salt. it needs to be SALTY!

for sure the arnold palmer, half ice tea, half lemonade

Do root beer floats count? :)

Cedevita Lemon

a caipirinha... beach and umbrella included.

iced tea or a chocolate milkshake with frozen strawberries in it

Lemonade & vodka. Also good with limeade.

Sweet tea in a jar! Who needs a Nalgene? ;)

seltzer with lemon

Hope yall have fun with Screen Doors and Sweet Tea. Try the Cantaloupe
Daiquiris page 8 or a Mailbox Cocktail page 5!

mojitos, sangria and vodka soda ... and lemonade!

Lemonade or a mango mojito...mmm.

I like half ice tea, half lemonade (ie. the Arnold Palmer).

Homemade sweet tea with fresh mint

Sweet tea, lemonade, iced coffee, or a nice glass of rose.

Now I'm thirsty.

caipirinas or 1/2 and 1/2 (lemonade and tea)

large milk with ice cubes

iced tea. or maybe buttermilk.

Sweet tea with lemon or brain-freeze cold water.

Iced Tea - Can't get enough of it.

iced sun tea with mint

sangria with lots and lots of lime

Pimm's Cup, made with French lemonade, garnished with strawberries if possible.

sweet tea...oh that sweet tea brings so many wonderful memories...i used to have a wee sip from my moms glass as children were ot alowed tea until you were 12....so those little icie cold tiny sips of sweet tea were heaven and it remains my heaven!

I spend much of my time on the road in a touring band - last summer we were rolling through Chapel Hill, NC and found an elderly man on the side of the road selling sweet sun tea. It was incredible, and no other summer beverage I've had since has really been able to cut it...

Nonalcoholic is sweet tea, of course. I am a southern girl, after all! My fav drink with a kick, margaritas made with patron.

watermelon juice with a little lime and a shot of vodka

Water with slices of chilled cucumber.
gklstratos @yahoo.com

sweet iced tea mixed with lemonade...mmmm

Ha! Nezrite totally called it, though I consider the cock and bull ginger beer more important than the copper mug, and I prefer Rose's lime in addition to the wedge. Now that there's real sugar Coke all over my neighborhood, though, I have to admit an extreme infatuation..

Lemonade - with Bourbon if trying to get tipsy.

Sam Adams Summer Ale with a wedge of lemon.

Iced tea or a Margarita

For me ..........nothing refreshes like a huge glass of ( filtered ) ice water .....and the ice has to be made from filtered water also ........cause I nibble on the ice afterward !

watermelon juice - blended ice, watermelon, and a pinch of sugar.

Cucumber lemonade, when there's a garden full, or a cold beer.

good ole beer or fresh lemonade

I'm from the midwest and it wouldn't be summer without sun tea.

This year I'm all about green tea mixed with homemade lemonade.

I make a slushy strawberry drink that's basically a non-alcoholic strawberry daiquiri. As long as I call it a strawberry slush, everyone loves it. When I ask if folks want a virgin daiquiri, I get a lot of "No, thanks." Same drink, different names, different ends of the popularity scale.

Depending on the time of day and my mood I enjoy the following:

iced coffee
mojitos
margaritas
crisp white wine like a sauvignon blanc or a vinho verde
a spicy shiraz with barbecue
beer

The new favorite this summer is raspberry mojitos with coconut margaritas taking a close second!

I drink Oolong Tea, so in the Summer, I cool it in the frige and make OOlong Ice Tea!

iced tea all day!

iced green tea with mint or purple basil or iced coffee

Sweet tea, of course!! It's the house wine of the South!!!

i love making smoothies

A margarita from Frontera Grill...oh, why did I have to move from Chicago!?!?!

Sweet iced tea with fresh mint. Ahhhhh . . .

Iced Irish breakfast tea with lime, mint, and a touch of sugar

Alcoholic: Pisco Sour or a classic margarita on the rocks (with salt of course)
Non-Alcoholic: Rasberry and Lime Italian Soda... or coconut water (toss up)

Limoncello! Maybe with a side of mango sorbet. And a butter cookie.

After mowing the yard in 95F+ heat? Ice cold Imperial Pale Ale. Otherwise, ice cold water, and I do mean ice cold...just this side of frozen - 33F with a lime wedge.

Orangina. Nothing is more thirst-quenching. For later on, a mojito made from scratch - sugar muddled with fresh mint, a lime squeezed over it, rum (Jamaican is what I prefer) and some club soda. It looks like you took a scoop of swamp water and put it over ice, but it's sure good.

an Arnold Palmer...which is made even better with a teensy bit of vodka :)

Iced sun tea with no sugar or lemon or a cold beer.

no hesitation.. lemonade! love it!

On the alcoholic side, no contest: michelada, a mix of lime juice, tabasco and lager in a salt-rimmed glass.

Otherwise, iced coffee or tea, unsweetened, with milk.

Water with lemon and cucumber

Iced tea, lemonade, margarita, rose, sangria--all good!

Limeaid. I love ice cold limeaid.

I love mojitos by the pool. Yum!

oof...either freshly made lemonade or fruit smoothies. mmm....smoothies..

Sweet iced tea with lots of lemon and crushed ice...perfect while cooking a big pork butt roast in the smoker!

I love lemonade but it kills my stomach (the acid)

Lemonade made with ginger-infused water.

Pimms with lemon soda or gingerale, cucumber and orange. It says summer to me.

My favorite summertime beach drink is Pineapple juice and malbui pineapple rum. If I'm hanging out with the family ... its lemonade with strawberrries... yummy thanks to my grandpa Cecil

water, and if i'm feelin' fancy with lemon or lime ;)

I drink ice water most of the time, and crave it, but for a treat I love real lemonade (pulp and all) or herbal peppermint iced tea. Thanks for the offer--the book sounds like great way to get back to my roots.

Beer so cold the condensation freezes on the outside of the bottle

iced anything...

With out a doubt and hands down, it's an ice cold glass of sweet tea. It's like nectar, and oh so good on a sweltering summer day.

good cold ice tea with lots of lemon...um it hits the spot

Raspberry Lemonade with tons of crushed ice.

I am southern.....the best summer beverage for my family is sweet tea!

Icy cold water is my favorite, but an occassional marguerita on the rocks is pretty good!

I was raised on sweet tea, lots of sugar, and it's still my favorite drink on a hot day. All my father's family were from the deep South, and that's still my choice of food or drink.

Two choices. Either an icy cold beer or a Cuervo margarita on the rocks.

Ice cold beer or Sweet tea.

Sweet tea or lemonade

My favorite summertime beverage is unsweetened iced tea :) *Thanks* for the giveaway!

Unsweetened ice tea - the best and home-brewed.

What I refer to as "cocktails with the kids" - cherry lime rickies. the tartness of the limes mixes perfectly with the sweetness of the cherry syrup (though I admit sometimes I'll use grenadine). My kids love helping me mix these up.

I like grapefruit flavored vodka mixed with kiwi strawberry lemonade, with a slice of fresh lime. Serve this ice cold! Great summer party drink!

My current favorite summer drink is red wine mixed with diet 7up and a lot of ice. It is cool and refreshing.

homemade lemonade, or ice tea

My favorite summertime beverage is sweet tea: cold-brewed, sweetened with simple syrup, served over ice with a chunky slice of lemon.

Fanta. After hiking.

A good and strong sweet tea. Not that sweet colored water that you get in most restaurants.

Fresh lemonade with juice from one fresh orange (for every ten lemons) to cut the tartness just a tad.

One can (or two) of ice-cold Coke. No glass, no ice - just the "stuff."

muddled fruit (like strawberry, raspberry, blueberry) with mint and ice cold lemonade in a tall glass half filled with ice.

water with a squeeze of lemon and liime.

fresh, not-too-sweet lemonade mixed with sparkling water and a little bit of basil

Cherry limeade

Sweet tea with fresh mint leaves from my garden.

iced coffee

cold beer while lounging in a hammock. barefoot, of course.

Lemonade is the best!

Sweet Tea and Mojitos

Raspberry Lemonade

Iced tea lemonade or a beer.

Everyday I drink a mixture of:

Bottled Water
A couple of squirts of Lemon Juice
2 pack of "the pink stuff"

It makes me feel like I am drinking a yummy lemonade and is a good way to get me to drink that daily water.

Good ol' water! But I can't resist a nice cold glass of cream soda.

Water or vinho verde

Mojito. All the way.

mint iced tea, and lemonade and milkshakes!

I'm a fan of the Arnold Palmer, as well.

For me, it's a toss-up between lemonade and iced tea.

Pimms cup. Or maybe pink lemonade.

I love sweet tea.

Love lemonade and iced tea too!

What we refer to as boozy-ade in my house: lemonade spiked with vodka. Of course, lemonade by itself is also a favorite.

Definitely plain iced tea with lemon, all year round.

Growing up, my Mom made a slushee type of drink she called yellow ice.... sounds weird, but I loved it. I know it had an orange, mango and other flavors in it, but she still won't let go of the recipe. Someday!!

Lemonade, or just ice water

Cold Sancerre or Proseco.
Or lemonade and seltzer.

homemade, freshly-squeezed, ice cold lemonade..........

Strawberry pink lemonade.

Lemonade with fresh mint

Definitely sangria - I make both red and white varieties and they are delicious....

On the nonalcoholic side - fresh squeezed lime-ade....

Sweet tea with my home-grown mint

Cherry slushies! Mmmm!

Tonic water and a slice of lime

Sweet tea, of course! But if I am in a party mood......Bailey's on the rocks, YUM!

Mint iced tea is my fave! Even though I am a New Englander I love southern cooking and would love to have this cookbook!!

Iced tea, water with citrus, or beer, depending on time of day and mood. It's almost beer-thirty, I think.

Iced tea...or a G&T!

Brewed Iced Tea with fresh mint leaves

Sweet Tea...my mom grew up in Tennessee and she raised me on sweet tea and there is nothing like it!!

Sweetened lemonade with a hint of mint from the garden.

ICE cold homemade Root Beer. Brings back memories of Cape Cod, fried clams and driving those silly go-carts! For dessert we'd have a Root Beer float. Summer doesn't get any better!

Fresh lemonade or sweet tea.

Quite honestly, it's sweet tea! I'm a displaced Southerner and I always try to have a pitcher in my fridge. My method is to fill the pitcher a quarter to a fifth full of sugar, then heat up two cups of water and stir them in. Brew two Lipton's brew for iced tea bags in there, add cold water or ice to taste, and enjoy!

Nothing says summer quite like a cold beer. Except for, perhaps, another cold beer. ;)

taro bubble tea

I'm from the South, so what do y'all think it is. Sweet tea, of course!!

GATORADE

LINDALSHOT@aol.com

Strawberry lemonade

Must have tea. not just in the summer, but all year round

Sweet ice tea for sure. My second favorite is fresh homemade lemonade. The price of lemons keeps me from making it much though.

Ice cold Pink Lemonade--YUM!!!!!!!

Ice Tea sweetened with Peach Nectar. Yum!

Kiwi strawberry lemonade and sweet tea

Sauvignon blanc. Definitely.

I'll have IBC cream soda, please!

I love fresh fruit strawberry lemonade slushie so cool and refreshing

Frozen sangria! Iced Moroccan Mint Tea would be a close second.

I love fresh brewed ice tea with lemon.

My favorite is strong, dark, brewed iced tea (sweetened with a little sugar while still hot). Sun tea is fine, but it just doesn't get strong enough for me. My sweet tea has to be strong enough to stand up to all those ice cubes!

I like the Arnold Palmer, too, with that strong iced tea. The lemonade has to be made with fresh lemons, of course.

The recipe book sounds wonderful. Thanks for the chance to win!

fruit smoothies

Sun Tea or
Gin and Tonic
