Photo of the Day: Sesame Rice Balls

potd-sesamericeball.jpg

Look, dark gray goo in a white ball! Don't you want to eat it? Yes!...

Well, I do because I know it's just a sesame rice ball, known as tang yuan in Chinese and one of the few Chinese desserts that I'd actually long for. Bite into the glutinous rice-based skin and unleash the hot, sweet, black sesame paste within. Where I'm Cooking From knows what I'm talking about; she says, "Now all I want is to introduce as many people as I can to the sesame rice ball experience, if only to have company while I eat mine."

Oh gosh I love these. Especially when they're in a ginger/sweet potato sweet soup.

I also love these at dim sum/tea houses where they serve them not in a soup but rolled in crushed peanuts, toasted coconut flakes, and sugar.

Must. Eat. Some.

ugh *shiver* that looks like a cervix.

Oh hey, that's my photo! Thanks for posting it, Robyn.

Jacquie, Southern bella, everyone else, please come and have sesame balls with me.

Mm...these are a favorite of mine...okay anything with black sesame really...

@Southern_bella
...a cervix...really? ::tries to look at photo from a different angle::

@Southern_bella: ...Okay, I must not have seen enough cervixes in my life.

@fuuchan: I agree, anything with black sesame = WIN. My favorite black sesame dessert so far is black sesame soft serve. Mmm.

@Southern_bella: I really, really hope that that's not what your cervix looks like.

I love tang yuan! I like to scoop out the sesame inside and discard the dough part. And ginger soup is essential.

yes, at first glance, it resembles the opening of a cervix, if you've never seen one, google "cervix" and click on "images", it resembles the first picture that show up in my search results!
