Ice Balls: Because Ice Cubes Have Too Much Surface Area
I must lead a deprived life, having never seen ice balls before. Ice balls are popular among drink connoisseurs because, due to the lower surface area, they melt more slowly than ice cubes.
The ice mold from Japan-based Taisin makes a range of perfectly formed ice balls in different sizes. If you don't need that level of perfection, not martha shows you how to make your own with a simpler ice ball mold.

If I had time to custom make my own ice balls....
I wonder if there are any refrig out there that will make round balls instead of the crescent shaped ones. Who started the large cresent shaped ice cubes anyways?

I'm pretty sure that the crescent shaped ones are used because they take up more space in the glass, leaving less room for liquor. Not sure who came up with them but my guess is that it was a tavern owner.
