The Pope Does Not Want Your White Sausage
After a delightful White House visit this morning, Pope Benedict XVI cruised down Pennsylvania Avenue in his sweet popemobile. Apparently, he likes White Houses but not white sausages. He's tired of receiving the wurst, originally from his native Deutschland, as a gift. It's a nice gesture, but a little awkward. You understand, right?

At Toyota facilities, if a Japanese engineer comes to the US to visit they'll bring gifts from Japan. When my stepson went to China last year with other highschoolers he was told he should take American-made gifts for his host families. So ... wouldn't it stand to reason a gift for a foriegn dignitary should be something made locally vs. something that person grew up with? I mean, come on, if I'm going to Europe I'd rather not receive a gift of Coca-Cola and some Hebrew Nationals. I want some reindeer medallions, dang-it!

I agree with Luna. When my husband and I go to London in a couple weeks, we're bringing our host Twinkies. ... By special request from the host! Knowing the strength of processed Twinkies, at least they won't get smashed up in our checked luggage or go bad in the six days that the Twinkies will be staying in our luggage. :)
When I went to Australia, I stayed with a couple of host families, and I brought them California walnuts.
It is definitely more special to bring people something they might not get in their country/city.

Good point, Luna. When I lived in AZ and would come back to NY for a visit, I would load up on regional NY products, though I must admit, some were gifts and some were for personal use. I'm not sure what it's like in AZ now, but a few years ago I couldn't get a decent bagel if my life depended on it!
