"Florida has the key lime pie, Massachusetts has the Boston cream pie and, hopefully, Maryland will have the Smith Island Cake": The iconic multi-layered cake made of flour, butter, eggs and chocolate could soon become Maryland's official dessert. Originally brought over by the settlers who came to Smith Island in the 17th century, the cake originally consisted of four layers but has gradually grown in size to around eight or 10 layers, with filling variations depending on who you got your recipe from. The Maryland Senate voted 44-1 in favor of the cake – all that's left now is approval from the House... [photo via On the Record]

hah! I made that cake a year or so ago from a recipe in (Gourmet? I don't remember what magazine really). The frosting is WAY sweet and tends to try to slide down the cake while it sits. maybe other recipes don't have that problem. It tasted pretty good, just looked weird.

???? Smith Island Cake - really???? My husband's family has been making this cake for decades. I have actually inherited the pans. They are round cake pans, just 1/4 inch tall. I have 10 pans, but to stay with tradition only 8 cake layers are used. I understood that the recipe was adapted from a dobish torte recipe from Austria or Hungary.

I'm from Baltimore and my mom made this cake years ago. We didn't call it Smith Island Cake. As a matter of fact we didn't call it anything but CAKE!!
BIG DEAL...Maryland is going down the toilet and this is all those schmucks in the State House have to do!
