Gordon Ramsay Is Not a Jerk; He Just Plays One on American TV

20080401-gordo.jpg

On Salon, Alex Koppelman suggests that Gordon Ramsay is not a total dick all the time, it's just that he plays one on U.S. TV. Koppelman says his British shows are full of human—you heard me right—human touches. He's downright warm and cuddly and even a bit huggy.

So is he a jerk or not?

Koppelman's point is well-taken, but it should be said that when Ramsay was a young chef on the make, his vaulting ambition gave him license to do just about anything, including stealing the reservations book of his arch-rival Marco Pierre White's restaurant. He denied it at the time, but has now 'fessed up. Now, no one would argue that that is not truly loathsome behavior.

But Koppelman cites this video as evidence of Ramsay's non-asshole status.

Gordon Ramsay: 1-Minute Steak

I must admit I wanted to eat that steak and those artichokes as soon as I saw this. Maybe with Gordon—if Koppelman is right, and Ramsay really is a worthy meal mate.

At least on the American Kitchen Nightmares (I haven't watched Hell's Kitchen), Ramsay is far from a "total dick." If anything, he really "gets" people and is able to bring out the best in them and less surprising, he's got plenty of restaurant business savvy.

I completely agree - I fell in love with Ramsay while watching the F word in the UK a few years ago - get past a bit of gruff exterior and he was a fantastic teacher. I was excited to hear he was coming to the US on Hell's Kitchen - what a disappointment. The show last night was over the top, I had to turn the channel - that is not Gordon. He strikes me as such a smart business man, I'm surprised he is allowing FOX to portray that persona.

Part of the reason he is a dick on Hell's Kitchen is because of the caliber of contestants that appear on the show. I think the casting department tries to find people that won't be able to handle the situation they are put in. I watched last night, and the man eliminated was not a professional chef, but a stay at home dad. He had not worked in a kitchen, but thought that catering to his children gave him enough experience to work in a busy kitchen environment. Part of the reason for this casting is possibly because of the show's premise. The show is looking for a line cook. The contestants cook recipes that are handed to them. They have to do the same menu in every episode. The yelling of Ramsay is the only thing that could make the show interesting. So I do not think of Ramsay as a dick...I think he is a passionate man who knows how to keep a disappointing show more watchable.(Though I won't endorse his need to be shown without a shirt in every episode of Kitchen Nightmares.)

If you've watched any of the supplementary (American) Hell's Kitchen video (the stuff that doesnt air on tv) in past seasons, you'll know it's edited to make him look like as big of a jerk as possible. If you watch the American Kitchen Nightmares, it seemed as if it was edited for shock value, as well. Neither Kitchen Nightmares nor the F-Word (BBC shows) portray him as being near the over-the-top jerk he seems on American TV.

I agree with the sentiment that he brings out some really human moments - on the British version of Kitchen Nightmares there are numerous episodes that are very touching (for lack of a better term). Gordon really has to struggle to get the best out of people who he seems to genuinely feel are better than they appear (or cook).

American television takes everything good about Gordon Ramsay on the BBC and tosses it out to dumb down the concept and increase the drama. It's a total shame. The BBC Kitchen Nightmares is an engaging and intelligent show that doesn't always have a happy ending or a magic solution... sometimes the problem is a overly long menu or a lazy chef or fancy sauces in a town that wants fish and chips. Gordon Ramsay takes a good amount of care to come in, identify the problem, and then set the restauranteurs off in the right direction. The American version is all drama and a free product placement heavy kitchen makeover that will solve all the restaurant's problems.

Anybody who watches the British version of his show has seen that his tough love approach really does have some love in it. He's an ass-hole but he also seems like a really good guy.

As for the stolen reservation book, my understanding of the situation was that he stole a reservation book from his OWN restaurant then blamed it on his rivals.

I love him on the F Word. He also brings out the best in people in the resturant rescue show he did. I love the show F Word as well, there is so many different story lines and Gordon is funny, fun, compassionate, empowering, inspiring and a fantastic teacher!

I watched HK all the way through for the first time last night. It was more entertaining than I expected. Of course it is very staged. I thought all the patrons walking out en masse was particularly fakey.

And Gordon as a major jerk, while convincing, is also hard on the nerves. I do question how much power the winner will actually have in G's new London restaurant in LA. None of those people seemed like they would ever be up to that task. Maybe the New York woman who made the soup he liked.

I actually had a chance to meet Gordon not long after his NYC restaurant opened; The London was offering kitchen tours after the meals, and he was working at the pass.

Needless to say, he was polite, appreciative, and actually fairly chatty for someone who was in the middle of dinner service. So I can completely agree with Koppelman's elegy.

Psst, it's posted on Salon.com, not Slate. Show the love...

The very best actors are playing themselves! If Ramsey is not, he’s one of the best true actors on TV. My vote is for a true asshole!

I could be wrong, but I believe he stole his OWN reservation book, not Marco Pierre White's, and merely cast blame upon White for the theft. I think I read it in the New Yorker, and this seems to confirm that:http://www.caterersearch.com/Articles/2007/04/05/312687/marco-pierre-white-to-sue-gordon-ramsay-over-book-theft.html

Is he a jerk? NO. Is he a great showman and chef? ABSOLUTELY. I believe his American TV persona is, if not manufactured, then embellished somewhat to turn him into the schmuck he appears to be. He gives American audiences exactly what they want by appealing to the lowest common denominator. Personally..I love the bloke!!

He is presented in a different (and not better way) on American television. He can be rather a softie on the British versions of his show. He can be caring, warm, funny. This really comes through on the F-Word where you can see him with his kids and with the animals they raise.

No, he has no patience for someone who's not interested in trying, but he becomes genuinely invested when someone wants to try or learn.

Then there's that memorable HK episode, I think last season, where he eliminates a contestant and immediately tells her that he believes in her and in her talent and is going to personally foot the bill to send her all the way through culinary school ...

Kitchen Nightmares is edited to maximize the drama, you really can't take the story line at face value. If you read between the frames you can see that he is has an excellent business sense and good advice.

Remember that Purdue chicken commercial? "It takes a tough man to make a tender chicken", this could be GR's motto as well.

Fox is amazing gracious in their dumbing down of television for we ignorant Americans. Thank heaven for them looking out for us. Love Ramsey's BBC shows, but something clearly gets lost in the (ironic) translation from English to English.

The F Word - best food show on right now besides No Reservations. it comes on for me at some wacky time like sundays at 11am on BBC america

Funny you mention this... I love the British Ramsey, not so much the FOX version.

I was watching the Charlie Rose interview with Thomas Keller posted on SE recently and Rose asked Keller about Ramsey... his response included a comment about how it was too bad that Ramsey's legacy would be defined by his TV persona rather than his ability as a chef, which Keller lauded.

What a great thread. Everyone is absolutely right about the "stealing the reservation book" story. I just flat out mis-remembered. Everyone has me jazzed about watching The F Word and the British Kitchen Nightmares on BBC America.

Wow! That's an awesome article. In fact, it's so good that I wrote the exact same piece for the NEW YORK SUN about six weeks ago. I know no one reads the SUN since it's essentially the print version of Salon (you know: under-read and largely irrelevant) but it's exciting to be knocked off so shamelessly. Here's the identical piece I wrote a while back just for reference:

http://www.newyorksun.com/arts/britains-dream-americas-nightmare

He may be a jerk but he also has a point. I think everyone knows that tv is about the DRAMA. i must have nonstop drama on tv or i may read a book(god forbid). i think it is sad that we see 2 different personas when i like him on bbc. I watch so much bbc my son started sounding british. He is never mad, he is cross- and other words.

Are Simon Cowell and Gordon Friends? I only ask this because it seems
convenient that their shows aired back to back last night on Fox. Seems to me that Fox is reaching for the reality factor of BRAVO. Gordon and Simon seem genuine; if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen!
They also come across as the real deal. So maybe Gordon took the glitzy
road after proving himself in the restaurant business! There was Rocco
Di Spirito(have no clue how to spell his name) who attempted the same!
How annoying he was!

We are all Gordon (and Simon) fans here. God Bless Hell's Kitchen and
KN! Rock on Gordie!

He's funny on Hell's Kitchen. Love the show.

The F Word is also a favorite.

I simply cannot stomach the production values on the FOX version but the BBC version mesmerizes me.

I think it may be my favorite food orientd show on television, and from just watching KNightmares I have to say I think the guy is a genuinely fantastic caring individual.

Simon Cowell should be stranded on an island with nothing but the demos ove all the performers he's cut.

So... let me get this straight. Gordon, in the UK, does a television show where there are real restaurant people in a real restaurant and he lets the real Gordon come through. Here in the US he does a television show with actors pretending to be restaurant people, on a set pretending to be a restaurant and Gordon pretends to be a screaming asshole. This is supposed to make us like him and his US show because.... they think that Americans are just to friggin' STUPID to watch the real thing? No wonder it's on a FOX network: the think that we're all dumb enough to swallow whatever shit they shovel our way.

Oh, and Gordon... you want to be taken seriously AND play a clown at the same time? Yeah. Right. Sure thing, you pathetic Bozo. You own how many successful restaurants yet you act like an asshole on American TV for what? More money? Your screaming idiot act is a kick in the teeth to the real Chefs of the world who spend the time:
1 working their way up through the ranks, confident that they really know their craft
2 hire good people with good skills and work ethics
3 take the time to instruct their staff in how they want the dishes prepared
4 get the right equipment & supplies for their staff to do their jobs
5 hire a dining room manager who knows how to pace the reservations so that the kitchen doesn't get so slammed that they can't do their jobs well
6 leading by example... not by posing for a camera and screaming.

How come the American talkshow hosts seem to enjoy being "funny" and talk all kind of nonsense and act stupid when they invite Ramsay over to their show? I just watched 2 different talkshows via SE and they were pretty unbearable - the hosts i mean. Gordon Ramsay was genuinely interested in the cooking and they weren't.
