Weekend Book Giveaway: 'Around the World in 80 Dinners'

20080322-aroundtheworld.jpgIn 2001 my friends, the award-winning cookbook writers Cheryl and Bill Jamison, realized that they had racked up enough frequent-flyer miles (440,000) to take a truly special, once-in-a-lifetime trip, literally around the world in 80 dinners. Four years later, they had a three-month travel itinerary in place that would take them on the ultimate culinary odyssey—more than 50,000 miles, to ten countries, to sample more than 800 dishes. Bill and Cheryl's entertaining, thoroughly enjoyable new book, Around the World in 80 Dinners: The Ultimate Culinary Adventure, (with a few location-based recipes thrown in for good measure) is the story of that trip. I've traveled and eaten with Cheryl and Bill, and I can tell you that they have a contagious, voracious appetite for life in general and good food in particular.

We're giving away five copies of Bill and Cheryl's book. To enter to win a copy, just tell us with a comment here what three destinations you would include on your around-the-world tour and why.

The standard Serious Eats contest rules apply. Winners will be chosen at random from among eligible comments. Comments will close at 12 p.m. ET Monday.

258 Comments:

Uruguay, Alsace, Thailand

not in any particular order...

JAPAN: amazing seafood (sushi!)
FRANCE: setting "standard" for cuisine
PERU: (real) ceviche

England - I was an English Lit major, Paris, South Africa - When I was young I wanted to be a zoologist

Paris for the patisseries and boulangeries, Hong Kong (or New Dehli?) for the street food, and then maybe Greece or Cyprus for painfully beautiful blue skies and something with a lot of lemon and olives.

vietnam
germany
france

Austin, TX - do the BBQ circuit
Ireland - pubs and traditional Irish music
Australia - why not?

So many places, so little time:

France: nothing compares
Thailand: I love Thai food
Argentina:must have the meat

Osaka, Japan - I adore Japanese food and this is the best foodie city.
Any city, Middle East - I want an authentic shwarma
Paris, France - Pastisseries, need I say more!

Paris - I love bread
Ireland - good cheese
Switzerland - chocolate!

Bread, cheese, chocolate; my favorite foods!! :)

Peru, Greece and Vietnam . . . because they are not landlocked (i.e. offer beaches and water recreation), they are culturally distinct and they cover a wide geographic spectrum that would take me all the way around the world.

India, Iran, and Thailand -- so I could taste my favorite foods as they're meant to be prepared and not Americanized.

Iceland---I was born there but don't remember it.
South Korea---Want my children, who are half Korean, to see where they (partly) come from
England/Wales---Does this count as one? For the castles, the history, etc.

Argentina for malbec and great beef
Tuscany for ANYTHING
Barcelona for tapas, wine, and very late nights

japan (sushi), france (dessert), switzerland (more dessert)

Spain: El Buco, Gaudi and Goya, regional wines, seafood, fresh citrus

Japan: seafood, nifty candies and packaged goods, robots, pink cars, the self-parking Prius, temples and shrines, spring baths

Costa Rica: volcanoes and pineapples, oh my!

Paris: I got a stomach bug in Paris while on my honeymoon and ate 1 apple and 1 salad during the entire 3 days, and I was most excited to eat in Paris!

Thailand: I love Thai food, and want nothing more than to try authentic Thai food.

Chile: My mom was born there so I grew up eating her Chilean concoctions and would love to eat the authentic stuff.

Hong Kong--my parents grew up there and always fondly recall the food they ate as children, so I'd love to try it!
Paris--so I can try an authentic macaron!
England--to eat real fish and chips! :)

Breakfast in Paris, because there is no better breakfast on the planet. Those lovely macarons or a buttery flaky pain au chocolat with mind-blowing cafe au lait.

Lunch in Tuscany... I had the best lunch of my life in Tuscany, it was a big perfectly cooked Florentine steak with some powerful SuperTuscan wine in an Osteria tucked away in the hillside near a castle. The meat was enough to fill you up for the entire week.

Dinner in Barcelona, after such a big lunch, you'd need a place that would be open late. All those lovely small plates, mmmm.

If you had a private plane, you might even be able to manage it all in one day. I guess this is about 80 dinners around the world though, but I still would probably choose those three locations.

Tokyo - I adore both traditional and modern Japanese food
Paris - For the bakeries and patisseries
Thailand - Cheap and tasty street food

(And of course Hong Kong, my hometown! :P)

Italy for everything
Alaska for the freshest fish
Lebanon for kibbi and grape leaves

Italy - no explanation required!
France - to see how my high school knowledge of French food words has held up
Thailand - to learn some new things

Italy..pasta that cannot be duplicated
Paris...especially the ham & cheese and all pastries
Marseilles....small cafes, reasonably priced seafood

Japan: is it cheating if I want to go to a lot of places in Japan? To experience the aesthetic of kaiseki and tea ceremony, all the way down to the humblest street foods?

China: So many regions to explore...Chinese food definitely ain't just stir fry and rice!

Korea: One of the East Asian countries I know the least about and a cuisine that I'm only vaguely familiar with but thoroughly enamored with.

Singapore: Country of foodies! How can you go wrong?

Italy, Spain, Brazil, Pacific Northwest...too many more to name!

Ushuaia, Argentina - what's more incredible than to have dine at the sourthern most city in the world? also the place where one of my favorite movie "happy together" by Wong Kar Wai was shot in (at the red lighthouse).

Singapore - where else can you find a place where almost everyone is a foodie and where the Chinese, Malaysian, Indonesian, etc...culture/cuisine come together.

Japan - everything from growing, preparing and presentation are so refined and detailed. a place where the chef's knife has a soul and not just a tool.

Brazil- to see what my husband ate for 2 years
Alabama- to be back with my family
Italy- to see what pasta could taste like, done right.

Italy for pasta, Poland for pierogies (my sister-in-law said she never tasted them better), and Austria for pastry!

Southern Italy
Greece
Vietnam

They are all beautiful destinations and I would love to explore the local restaurants and enjoy the authentic cuisine.

Tuscany - some of the best food I've ever head
Provence - would love to experience the "real thing" there!
Valencia - paella!

Marrakech, Morocco - daily visits to the souks for fresh produce and spices, shopping for fabric and beads; just a total immersion in the rich food of Morocco.

Savoy, France - reminisce in childhood memories from a trip I took with my grandparents when I was 12.

Okinawa, Japan - to learn more about the cuisine and daily life which is so different from the busy lifestyle I've witnessed in Tokyo.

Italy, Japan, Israel.

Japan - the best
Italy - real, simple Italian food
France - to see what it's all about

The first two are easy:

New Orleans - a morning cafe au lait, as much seafood as I can stuff my face with, and a late-night hurricane

Barcelona - tapas and wine

The third is much more difficult, but I think in the end, I would choose Tokyo in a search for great sushi. But there are so many choices...

Munich, Germany
Kobe, Japan
Hong Kong

because I lived there as a child and want to see those places with the eyes of an adult.

France - I've been to France while studying abroad but had the bad fortune to stay with a woman who, while otherwise warm and personable, didn't like to cook that much. I want to go back and experience true French cuisine.
Japan - I love Japanese food, especially sushi, and wonder how Americanized our sushi has become. But also because Tokyo has risen the ranks among fine food cities.
Italy - I love the simplicity of Italian food and would roam the countryside, stopping in lots of little local places, for food, wine and of course gelato!

Morocco, Pakistan and Thailand, because all three cultures drink Green Tea, but eat different food. An interesting theme IMHO.

1. Allahabad, India (I miss India in general, but I'd like to see the Kumbh Mela for myself).
2. Dubai, UAE (to see the Palms and visit friends).
3. Maldives (Because, well... who doesn't have a little slice of desire for the fantasy island gold standard?)

Italy- the pasta, pizza, and expresso
Viet-Nam, Pho
Brooklyn, NY- Steak

Thailand, Morocco and Paris.

Belgium - chocolate and mussels
Hong Kong - dim sum
San Francisco - sour dough

India - Samosas and naan and i just miss the country in general since i went there for a 3 week study abroad that is no longer being offered.

Korea - My mother's homeland, i'd love to be able to immerse my self in its culture completely, eat my grandmothers degi bulgogi, bimbimbop, and kimchi.

Italy - The food has always interested me... to be able to try fresh pastas, salumi, and just made mozzarella or freshly picked truffles.

Cairo - I have always wanted to experience their food first hand
Hong Kong - such a mixture of Chinese culture and European influence
Mexico City - what can I say? as a California girl, it has had a tremendous influence on my life

Cleveland, OH - for my Grandmother's cooking.

New Orleans - Oyster Poi Boys...yum.

Hawaii - because I need to get away from this Ohio winter, I mean spring (we just had 4+ inches of snow); & get some fresh seafood.

Chicago
Los Angeles
Philadelphia

It is a hamburger, hot dog, cheese steak, hoagie italian beef, french dip sandwich grand tour

New Zealand - for the best lamb I've ever had + GOOD Cadbury chocolates

Japan - bento boxes and impressive department store food sections

France - food, cheese, bread, pasties... mmm!

Paris, because, well, it's Paris
Florence, great food and great art
anywhere in China

Amsterdam for the frites, Paris for the lemon tarts and Chicago for the pizza!

Italy - pizza, and David, I guess
Greece - baklava! and moussaka!
Morocco - any kind of Arab food and the beautiful buildings and scenery

japan: amazing ramen and seafood!
spain: manchego, paella, turron!
vietnam: EVERYTHING!

YUM!

Ethiopia: complex, completely delicioius food with high emphasis on the social

Korea: not nearly as popular as other Asian cuisines, but it - like Ethiopia - is really unique and complex, there's nothing like it

New Orleans: popular but with good reason, it has it's own cultural and geographical significance

Hmm... That's hard. Definitely somewhere in the Maghreb to start. And probably somewhere in Spain -- Barcelona or Madrid. And I think we'll have to include India in there, though God knows exactly where. Ach, I'm really hungry now.

St John USVI, there is a cheeseburger joint called Skinny Legs that not only has incredible cheeseburgers, but a great Carribean view--what could be better!?

Paris, because I went there when I was too young and didn't have the money to eat at the restaurants I now dream of.

Third is a tie between Rome, for the same reason as Paris. And Dublin, because we're Irish and it's one place I haven't been that I'm dying to visit even if they aren't known for their food, I'm all about pub fare!

And I think I'll throw in two that I haven't yet experienced, but am pretty sure I will someday. New Orleans Po' Boy, and Philadelphia Cheesesteaks.

Okinawa -- Okinawan cuisine is very similar to mainstream Japanese, but they have lots of their own touches.
Peru -- I've tried some Peruvian dishes and would love to try more. I've been told by my former Peruvian roommate that Peruvian cuisine is the food that all other Latin American countries look to inspiration. (Plus, I would love to see Machu Picchu!)
Mozambique -- It uses lots of fresh seafood, which I love! There are also lots of lovely influences from Portugal found in this dishes. Did I mention piri-piri sauces? :)

If you let me have a fourth, I'd have to add Iran. I LOVE Persian food!

Indonesia, France, Mexico

France, Korea, Turkey

France, Italy and China - all because of the food!

Australia, Bali, and Thailand - just because.

barcelona - wonderful city with great food and architecture
brussels - i've never been...
sicily - although i've been to italy a few times, i've never made it to sicily and i so want to go...

Japan- fresh sashimi
France- macarons
Hong Kong- they have everything there!

Japan, for the sushi.
Paris, for the everything.
Italy, for everything else.

Places I don't recommend for food are the places I seem to go to... (Bahrain, I am thinking about you.)

Marrakech, Morocco: one of the world's great cuisines in a city I've been dying to see;

Roses, Spain: to sample the fare at El Bulli, what else?

and since this is a cuisine tour, China to try something from each of the regions there

England for a proper High Tea
Italy for a multi course pasta extravaganza
France For a relaxing bistro experience
My travels are mainly vicarious right now so i'd love the book:) Thanks!

Thailand, Israel just for falafel off the street, Italy for hand made pasta and cheese, Spain for El Bulli

Really there is no place I wouldn't go, but that is a good start

Vietnam - for the food
Dijon - for the history of food
Argentinia - for the diversity

Paris - for great bread, pastries, restaurants, and really, all things food-related
Spain - for tapas (Cal Pep in Barcelona is fab), to try El Bulli in Roses, and the continued search for good paella (had some in Barcelona but it wasn't very good)
Italy - again, great for all things food-related

Paris: Because I was too poor to afford a really good meal in a five star restaurant when there, and because I'd love to have Dorie Greenspan to share it with me.

Sydney : because I've always wanted to go to Australia & Sydney's supposed to be such a fun & great city.

Thailand : because I love Thai food & would love to eat it in its native country. (Ok, so I do have a laundry list of other cities & countries, but you only asked for three.... will mention them next time. :)

Italy-because I love Italian food
Switzerland-because I love chocolate,
and
South Mississippi- because I love my home-cooked Southern comfort
foods, like fried chicken, and gumbo, and red beans and rice!

Spain -- the new culinary capital..
France -- where the culinary revolution was born
and any Asian country because I'd like to experience true Asian food.

Mexico for fresh, hot tortillas made on the street
China, to try the cuisine in its authentic form
France for a picnic lunch from the fromagerie, boulangerie, and chartrucerie and great outdoor produce markets

Vietnam - Asian-French fusion
Paris - Where cooking became art
Brazil - I'm a carnivore at heart

Tokyo, Japan for the Japanese take on world cuisine
Los Angeles, CA because nothing beats the Chinese there
Paris for all the croissants I could ever want

Japan - to experience the real deal
Vietnam - to improve my technique
Tuscany - can never get enough of it

Italy - for the pasta
Paris - for the pastry
Walla Walla, Washington (my hometown) - for the wines

Thailand and Vietnam - Just as everyone who has visited these places remembers...glorious, fresh, piquant, bracing, fiery, pungent.

Burma - Not just to be different, but because I found the food to be prepared so lovingly (and often time-consumingly...but you're on Burma time...who cares!). The food was unexpectedly wonderful and flavored in such wondrous ways. I'd been to Burmese restaurants in SF and Washington D.C but these meals didn't prepare us for the flavor revelation we found in Burma!

Italy - love the cuisine & people!
Holland - visited there once & fell in love with the food
Brazil - the people, food, and scenery there is beyond belief!!

Vietnam - my oldest brother served two tours of duty there and always tells me how great the food was.

Germany - my maternal grandparents were German & I love German food and hope to someday visit there.

Australia - no particular food cravings but want to see the Great Barrier Reef someday!

Bora Bora for the seafood w/ a French accent.
Venice for the pasta with squid ink
Anywhere in France!

Italy- Any and EVERYTHING!
Ireland- Traditional Pub grub
Spain- All of the Tapas bars

Oh wow, this sounds like such an amazing and life-changing trip! I think I would forego some of the known foodie places just to be different and just so that I can globe-trot:

Africa - I think if I did go and see what people ate and how they lived, their situation would hit home for me more than those infomercials on TV.
Vietnam - I love the clash of Asian and French cultures, despite the potential food poisoning from boat food
Paris - Well I have to get good food somewhere on this trip!

Italy - ancestors were from Italy would love to try something authentic
Thailand - never have had Thai food but it sounds wonderful
India - they have some great sounding unusual combinations

Italy--for the art and the food
Japan-for the art and the food
Hawaii--for the beach and the food

tokyo, to enjoy the tech
vietnam for dinner
bangkok for the nightlife

Italy: I'm half Italian, greatest cuisine in the world
Ireland: I'm half irish, would love to experience the cuisine there
Mexico: My favorite cuisine, Go Figure!

Vienna for breakfast pastries, Paris for lunch at the Louvre, and Thailand for a marvelous, authentic Thai dinner.

Morocco, for the tajine. Vietnam, for the street food. Calabria, for the inventive use of peperoncino.

I'd start with New York City--never been there and heard New York pizza is to die for.
Then on to Hong Kong for some authentic Chinese food
And finally to Paris--love, love, love French food

This question is too difficult. Back to Cork County, Ireland for the best market I have ever been too, Singapore, and, of course, France.

Italy---For the food
Vietnam---For the pho
Barbados----For the flying fish cakes

Two great European food cities, and a nexus for Mexican cuisine.

Italy ~ loved it there and would go back in flash.
Finland ~ family came from there & would like to see the country.
China ~ just read The Last Chinese Chef & now I'd like some "real" Chinese food.

Italy for the beauty, Switzerland for the candy, and Australia for the good looking men with hot accents. Pick me or I'll tell the Easter Bunny you have been bad. :)

What an interesting adventure it must have been traveling and writing this book!

I would love to go to these countries to try their wonderful food and for the beautiful scenery and sightseeing (in this order):

Switzerland
Italy
France

Paris, France
New Orleans
Tuscany

Thailand for the awesome hot and spicy food, especially the tomyam.
Japan for their fresh sushi and perfect tempura!
Italy for pasta, pizza and more pasta and pizza! :)

My son is giving his responses (he is 8)

Spain, visit friends, good food

South Korea, my son says, because of the pizzas with hot dogs, etc. (previous serious eats article) they also have friends in Seoul.

Australia, for Kangaroos

This is a cool giveaway because with travel comes authenticity (if you pinpoint the right destinations). Although my Air Force career was very rewarding, I never visited thesde coveted locations:

Peking: In general. northern Chinese food is not spicy nor is it cooked using any excess fat. I would like Peking duck cooked right at home with rice and vegetables.

Bombay: Indian food is also healthy and curries are not necesarily hot nor spicy unless you request them prepared that way. I want to taste an onion bhajee and a medium curry prepared with local spices because that is what makes the difference.

Rome: Forget breakfast and lunch. I have been to Italy and words do not do justice to an authentic Italian meal.

Thailand: to eat the curry, see the beaches, and try the street food
Central Mexico: eat the wonderful mexican food
Italy: pizza and gelato

Spain: amazing tapas
Thailand: amazing EVERYTHING...I am a Thai food junky
Ethiopia: amazing Injera (spongy pan flatbread) and yummy Doro Wat (stewed chicken made with spicy, pungent Berbere paste)

India for the delicious seasonings
Germany for my growin' up comfort foods (can you say knackwurst mit senf on a broetchen?)
Israel for the wonderful homemade bread I bought off of the street vendor at the local market

Italy for the wine and food
France for the champagne and food
Aruba because I just visited there and the isalnd is just gorgeous with some really top restaurants with a gorgeous setting on the beach.

Italy - for the art
New York City - for the culture
Seychelles - for the relaxation

Rio de Janeiro for Churrascaria
Singapore for the Hawker Stall foods
San Francisco for the seafood

cv

Hawaii, Paris, Greece

Italy - I would love to attend one of those large "alfresco" family feasts, because eveyone seems to be having a grand old time!
Hawaii - Can't decide on a small beach or over the top Hawaiian luaus. I've been to Walt Disney's Ohana (before the revamp), sadly none of the party wanted to do the Polynesian resorts luau.
China - I want to go back to the Summer Palace and have another sausage on a stick (tasted like a breakfast sausage infused with brown sugar!)...plus walk through the gardens and ride the dragon boats again.

China, Italy, and Mexico, 3 different places with totally different foods, but everyone can appreciate their food, and its the 3 best types of food.

Ireland - I have always wanted to go here. My family is very proud of their Irish heritage. Most of the people in my extended family have gone there but I haven't made it yet.
Italy - I have been there already and I am constantly craving their street vended pizza, especially when I am pregnant. I would like to go to places I have read about in books since and see how it feels.
India - I guess I have an "I" them going on. What would Freud say about that? I would like to go to India because it is so different form anything I have every known.

I would go to Costa Rica because I've always wanted to see the rainforest. Then I would go to the United Kingdom because I've always wanted to see the remnants of history there. Last but not least, I would go to Australia because I would love to see the wildlife including kangaroos and koalas.
