Serious Easter Artisanal Chocolate Egg Giveaway

20080317-johnkira.jpgWe at Serious Eats love all the food traditions associated with Easter, but we must admit there is a special place in our hearts and in our stomachs for chocolate easter eggs.

So we have undertaken an extensive search for great chocolate easter eggs, and we have found some at John & Kira's, an artisanal chocolate-maker from the Philadelphia area. I have been writing about and eating their terrific chocolates for years now, and I know how much love and care goes into every piece of chocolate they make. So we're excited that John Doyle today has graciously consented to letting us give away a box of 36 hand-decorated chocolate Easter eggs filled with delicious 64 percent Valrhona dark chocolate ganache.

To enter to win, just tell us here in the Comments section what your favorite Easter or Passover food is. One winner will be chosen at random today, and the winners' eggs should arrive in time for Easter. And if you don't happen to win today, you can try again tomorrow or order chocolate this week from John & Kira's and receive a 10 percent discount by using the promotional code serious1.

The standard Serious Eats contest rules apply. Comments will remain open until noon ET tomorrow (March 19, 2008).

Ooh, my favorite Easter food is definitely ham. A nice baked ham basted with honey, pineapple juice, brown sugar, and a little bit of soy sauce. Baked in the oven until the edges are crispy. My family can't wait until we sit down to eat. We all stand over the stove after the ham has come out to slice off thin slices of that delicious caramelized edge of the ham.

Hmm.... I love Peeps, do those count?

As far as traditional foods, I love hot cross buns...

I love noodle kugel! Not sure if that's a traditional Passover dish, but we always end up making it.

My favorite Easter food is scalloped potatoes. We always have these at Easter with the ham and they are a perfect accompaniment for the holiday.

Jellybeans stolen from my brother's Easter basket when I was 8!

Matzah Pizza (for fans of Slice NY)

I'm a bit ashamed. Not even my boyfriend knows, but I look forward to Easter all year so I can have a Cadbury egg. They're sickeningly sweet and messy to eat, but I love them. I only eat one every year, but I have to have it or somehow it just isn't Easter.

Deviled eggs. Or yellow peeps.

It's alllll about the cadbury mini-eggs.

I went to sleep last night thinking about delicious lamb cake.

Traditional, though maybe not quite a food: Manishewitz Concord Grape!

Candy-wise, I loved Reese's peanut butter eggs and Cadbury's full size original eggs. Mmmm.

Aside from all the candy and the easter baskets my mom used to put together, roast lamb! My mom would stick olives and garlic cloves into the roast, and getting a slice with one of those would be like winning a prize. Mmm.

Jelly Beans!

red jelly beans!

matzah ball soup!

Black jelly beans and asparagus say Easter to me.

Ooh...coconut-filled dark chocolate eggs actually make me start to get excited about Easter weeks beforehand.

The sweet bread we only have once a year at Easter time....yum.

I'm a big fan of all the delicious varieties of Easter candy. Little egg-shaped Whoppers, Cadbury mini-eggs and creme eggs, little pink and yellow Peeps... om nom nom nom!

deviled eggs!

My Nonna traditionally makes rabbit for Easter. When we were kids we used to joke that we were eating the Easter Bunny. He was tasty

Thought despised in my youth, I have come to appreciate the maccaroon. ANd they come in so many flavors now! Cappucino chips? Toffee crunch? Amazing!

You acn't live on those alone, though. I make a wicked matzah brie (like french toast) and have mastered the matzah ball.

Chocolate. Well, and maybe some licorice jelly belly jelly beans, too.

Peeps and anything chocolate

Looooove JellyBeans

Paska bread. Paska bread. More paska bread.

Peeps are great to look at and rearrange on your countertop.

reese's peanut butter eggs, the best food in the world!

Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs. The higher ratio of peanut butter to chocolate is so much better than regular Reese's Cups.

I'm a fan of my mother's easter challah.

I might start a debate here, but I love hard (break glass with them( Matzah Balls

i'm a sucker for peanut butter eggs, too. the amount of peanut butter is absurd.

Candy, candy, and more candy!

great macaroons...
chocolate dipped please!

Deviled eggs and ham!

Roast pork (I'm Cuban!)

anything chocolate

Jelly beans, I love the jelly beans!

Foil wrapped chocolate Easter eggs, the kind with crisped rice!

It's a tie between a yummy roast ham and those egg-shaped Reese's with all that extra peanut butter!

Jelly Beans.

Malted robins eggs!

I think I have to go with the candy route..things you only have once a year, the cadbury egg, peanut butter egg... yum!

Cinnamon buns.

I enjoy the schockiest of Easter treats-the Cadbury Cream Egg and Mini-Eggs. I just can't help myself.

My favorite easter food is ham, glorious ham. My favorite candy is by far Mini Robin's eggs!

My Mom's bread pudding.

Deviled eggs and leg o' lamb...

leg of lamb with garlic and rosemary

My favorite Easter food is something really silly...

Every Easter my Grandmother hosted the event and made sure to have two silly grocery store Bunny Cakes!

I'm sure you've seen them... it's a two-layer round cake that has been cut down the center into two half-rounds. The halves are stood on their cut sides to resemble a bunny body. Then the cake is frosted and cover in coconut, decorated with a sugar-candy face, set of paws, and tail.

...presented in plastic shell packaging, of course.

The cakes were always a hit when we were little kids, and though Grandma is no longer on "cake duty" anymore -- one family member is always sure to pick up a Bunny Cake for the next generation of youngsters in our family.

Leg of lamb or a honey glazed ham, and Reese's peanut butter eggs!

Ham-it's really the only holiday I have it.

Yum. Easter food. I guess my favorite would be Hot cross Buns, but roast leg of lam runs a VERY close second.

Easter: my sister's roasted leg of lamb with salsa verde.

Passover: my honorary grandmother's homemade gefilte fish

geshmirte matzo = you spread a mixture of cottage cheese, egg, and sugar on matzo and bake it.

ham or deviled eggs

Easter eggs. MMMmmmmm... I just adore hard-cooked eggs... something about the colored shell makes 'em yummier.

And, a few days later, egg salad...

I also adore Valrhona, so pick me, pick me!

Dark chocolate covered matzo!

Chocolate matzoh crunch!

My favorite food for Easter are solid red dyed eggs in a Greek basket. I guess it's not so much the eating of them, or the cracking of them. Rather, it's the visual appeal of the basket of crimson.

As a child, the vision of the basket of red eggs instantly brought deep emotions of loving family, a loooong holiday meal with lots of laughter, and napping on the couch while my Mom and my aunt's drank coffee and played board games till the wee hours of the morning.

What a warm memory!
Thanks for reminding me.

Bread Pudding with Bourbon Sauce for dessert.

Leg of lamb with mint and ginger glaze. Also pickled herring, matzah ball soup, warm challah with citrus butter and spicy pickled eggs

I love leg of lamb and, because my partner is Greek, I've always wanted to try Margaritsa soup (lamb's head!)

Easter candy in general, particularly Cadbury Mini-Eggs.

Cadbury mini-eggs

passover: charoset.
easter.... man I feel ashamed admitting this but Cadbury's eggs but I have to have one every year.

Hot cross buns ... though I haven't had a good one in years! :(

baked ham, scalloped potatoes, layered salad--its all good. Those chocolate eggs with malted milk are enjoyable as well.

leg of lamb with lots of garlic

There's nothing quite like our family's brisket for passover. But I will admit, I love those creme eggs too. Thank goodness Passover doesn't coincide with Easter this year. Nothing worse than no corn syrup and candy goodness everywhere...

Ham.
And anything chocolate.

Yesterday, I said deviled eggs. Now I'm thinking malted chocolate eggs.

Malted eggs and egg bubblegum

Reese's eggs

I love charoset. And anything to do with matzah. Ooh, I like tzimmes too.

And, perhaps it's just because ham was the forbidden food when I was young, but for easter (married a catholic) I like a Honey Baked Ham!

dark chocolate covered matzoh, and also those orange-creme cadbury eggs.... bur don't tell my mother. mmmmm

Jelly beans and chocolate bunnies!

its a tie between the mini malted robin eggs and jelly beans, especially the sweet tart ones!

hot cross buns!

Cadbury Creme Eggs! too bad they've gotten smaller.

My favorite Easter food is the Egg Strata my nana used to make...eggs poured over bread, sausage and cheese and baked to puffy, golden goodness.

Whitsun Lamb, made with cubed leg of lamb in a creamy asparagus sauce, from the 1976 Cavendish "Soups and Stews" cookbook.

My favorite Easter food is not so much the main foodstuffs themselves, but the "appetizers" my grandparents whip up. My grandfather makes a nice veggie tray to munch on, and my grandmother makes deviled eggs.

Chocolate easter bunnies :)

Sugared Easter eggs. Less healthy than the chocolate eggs, and with all that food coloring...but it was such a joy to crack them open, eat the little chocolates inside, then have huge chunks of sugar to suck on till I got a stomach ache!

Italian Easter torta.

With the leftover hardboiled Easter eggs, my mom would make eggs goldenrod served over toasted English muffins for Easter breakfast (the egg white bits would have random little streaks of pink and blue and green on them from their dyeing), along with fried country ham. My dad called this "scram gravy," referencing the "Smokey Stover"* comic strip which featured a sign reading "scram gravy ain't wavy."

*Mom always added a splash of liquid smoke to the sauce, interestingly enough...

Black jelly beans - I can't eat enough of them.

Also, and this is actually so gross, Russell Stover's eggs - the pink ones with the pink filling. Just thinking about them gives me cavities.

Oooh, another fan of black jelly beans here.

Hot cross buns warm for the oven can't be beat!

I love paska when I have time to make it (or when I can find someone else who does).

Peeps! I love em, dont care what anyone else thinks.

My mom's charoset. It's your basic Ashkenazi apple-walnut mix, but something about her proportions is juuust right.

portugese sweet bread, and candy! yum.

The number one traditional food for the easter season? Hot cross buns. And loaded - the more dried and candied fruit, the more spices, the better. Yum!

Hmm. . . though I do celebrate Easter, I have never had a traditional food that I ate on such an occasion. But, I guess a food that certainly does symbolize Easter would be a leg of lamb with garlic and rosemary.

Cadbury eggs on the sweet side, the ham on the salty!

But I would say...that my all time sweet indulgence..secret candy...are Cadbury Eggs. They are AMAZINGLY sweet..and FUN to eat. I know they are not a TOP NOTCH candy like yours are..but they satisfy that sweet tooth..or should I say SWEET TEETH!

Easter Brunch at our house was always ham, 6 or 7 types of sausage, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and whatever the family brought to add to the festivities.

PEEPS!! Preferably the yellow ones. Then, for dessert, a beautiful glazed spiral sliced ham garnished with pineapples & cherries, along with twice-baked potatoes! I wish I could just sit down and eat though, instead of cooking it all (not the peeps of course)

Thanks so much for this giveaway. I love baked ham and chocolate covered coconut eggs. Thanks again.

I love a pork loin with a balsamic vinegar/raisin/onion sauce! Peas and carrots, new potatoes.

We love Lamb for Easter. Jesus Christ is our shephard. He calls us his sheep. Easter is about Jesus Christ rising from the dead. We honor our Lord and Savior on Easter and thank Him from the bottom of our hearts.

Ham!! And any kind of chocolate.

Easter Pizza which is a traditional Italian style pizza. Its has two layers of curst (top and bottom) with many different types of cheeses and meets inbetween. BTW, it has no sauce and is absolutely delicious.
