Costliest Spice Coming to Costco
Good news for lovers of saffron! Beginning in May, you'll be able to buy certified saffron from Spain's Castilla La Mancha region at your local Costco. Costco buyer Gary Kotzen says, "We want the best of the best, and we want to offer it to our members without them having to pay the premium. We'll bring it in, package it ourselves and offer it to our members at about one third or even one fifth of the cost of similar saffron."

Oh great! How am I ever going to use up a Costco size pack of saffron?

Trader Joe's already sells a 1gm glass bottle of saffron - I think the last jar I bought was either $2.99 or $3.99. It's labeled Spanish saffron and is very potent.

I've previously seen saffron for sale at Costco. Does that mean they were selling fake stuff?

I am curious about the rice recipe in the Seattle Times article. I like the list of ingredients, but It seems like the order in which to add the ingredients isn't right...? I am also curious about 3 cups liquid to 2 cups basmati where 1 cup is white wine, sake or vermouth. Has anyone made a recipe similar to this?
