Photo of the Day: Mshalalé Cheese
When I first saw this photo of "mshalalé" cheese on Marianna's blog, Swirl and Scramble, I thought it was a bundle of pasta. Marianna explains that the name of the cheese means braids/braided. The cheese, which is from the Middle East around Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, is usually served drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with nigella seeds. She describes the taste as, "not too strong, slightly stronger in taste then mozzarella, firmer and a bit saltier too."

Looks very similar to cheeses found througout Central/Eastern Europe; often made with sheep or goat's milk and very often smoked before being brought to market. Salty, sometimes smoky, and very easy to carry around as a snack when you travel. I haven't ever seen it used in cooking but can imagine it in a salad. I think it is marketed in America as "string cheese". You're right, all, you'll love it!

I've had it as a mezza in all three of the countries mentioned in the post and it is very much like the string cheese that is available here in the US.
Go to an ethnic grocery to get the best and freshest versions.
