Palmer 'Chocolate' Bunny: Do Not Want
I love Cybele's semi-scathing in-depth review of Palmer's hollow chocolate flavored bunny. Yes, chocolate flavored—cocoa is the fourth ingredient. Cybele explains just how much of an effective role it plays in the nuances of flavor possessed by this bunny-shaped mass:
Sometimes I wonder if Palmer is doing the cocoa industry a service by buying beans that would otherwise be turned into compost or rot in the co-op storehouses. I don’t think I’d mind their products if they were sold as “biodegradable decorations” ... but sadly the appearance of a nutrition label seems to indicate they really do think people want to eat it.
"Biodegradable decorations" is my new favorite euphemism for "crappy chocolate."

Cheap Chocolate Bunnies are intended to have iconic rather than caloric value. That's why they're hollow!

"Biodegradable decorations" - LOVE IT!! Man that cover so much when it comes to mass produced holiday candy - not just the hollow bunny. How about conversation hearts?
Used to love getting one of those in my Easter basket (I always wanted the "white chocolate" one too) then I realized what a rip off it was since it had no substance.
Now I will take a finely handcrafted truffle egg please.

hilarious. Must its iconic quality preclude edibility? I love my kids, I'll go for the tasty confection vs the biodegradable deco.

Are you sure preservatives and artificial colorings are biodegradable?

Bio-Deco: Only consume as emergency rations. It's so sad, watching commercialism undermine the value of all things good.

I don't think any Palmer chocolate should be classified as "chocolate". It is really bad. A waste of money and certainly of time and calories. If I'm going to eat chocolate, I want to eat the best stuff I can find. This isn't it.

We can thank the FDA for this, for loosening the regulations on what can be legally sold as chocolate.

seyo - the FDA did not loosen the regulations about what can legally be sold as chocolate.
The above rabbit was not labeled chocolate. It was "milk chocolate flavored."
The proposal before the FDA that you're thinking of from last year (Standards of Identity) was pretty much rejected when the FDA got 34,000 comments in support of the current standards and Mars withdrew their support for the "safe and suitable" substitution of cacao fat for vegetable oil. Hershey's was left as the only member of the Chocolate Manufacturers Association on the record as supporting the change.
Unfortunately the groundswell to assure that cloned food would be labeled as such did not go through even though it had similar levels of support from the public.
