Paula Deen Is Trying to Kill Us, Part 3

deanmurder.jpgThis time with fudge made from Velveeta, butter, and cocoa powder. Formed into balls. Placed on sticks. Dipped in white chocolate. Rolled in nuts. She doesn't want us to live to see the New Year. Recipe here. Earlier: Part 1: Deep-Fried Butter; Part 2: Bacon-Wrapped Mac and Cheese

Where does the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding factor in? Which segment contains that particular diabetic coma? I don't think it's actually her recipe but I saw her make it on TV and got nauseous.

I'm startled that she did not use paraffin wax in this recipe. It sort of sounds as if it should be there.

Like in this recipe for peanut butter balls .

This was the talk of our house for days. We love Velveeta -- I mean, you can't make a better cheap-ass queso dip than a block of Velveeta, a can of Rotel and some Wolf chili -- and God knows our local food critics love Velveeta (Robb Walsh, anyone?). But Velveeta in fudge? Wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.

That said, I'd love to hear from someone who actually tried the recipe.

Paula didn't invent this one - it's on the Velveeta web site! My Great Aunt Edna used to make it when I was a kid. I remember loving it when I was 10, but haven't tried it since.

I saw her do this in an Iron Chef battle teamed up with with Cat Cora. I remember them being goey/drippy- not firmed up like PB balls. Maybe the Velveetta hardens up- like in your arteries? I was surprised they didn't have EMT's at the ready for the inevitable heartattacks the judges might have from these.

I wonder if the healthcare premiums are more for the crew members of her show?

Obviously, Paula's recipies are only to be made occasionally. It's her fun-loving personality that's makes her show enjoyable.

Did they once mention that this thing is probably 1000+ calories of fat and sugar. Did you see the size of those things! Maybe one or two nut sized candies like this would be reasonable for the holidays (like a truffle or two won't kill m), this thing was the size of a freaking baseball!
This sort of food - large doses of pure processed sugar and fats - is seriously dangerous to many people's health, especially many people at home watching TV during the daytime. I know much of my family does not really understand the damage something does to their boderline diabetic systems. I can't imagine anyone would make binge drinking look like so much healthy fun on daytime television, but its probably equally toxic.

I don't think anyone in the audience--or Paula Deen herself--was under the impression that these were healthy. She was totally hamming it up and having fun! I love her brand of craziness.

I dunno. Her sons Jamie and Bobby seem not only to have lived through her cooking but to have come out looking like cutie-pies too.

Ne fatties pas either.

Uh. Bobby could lose a few pounds. As he said, "Jamie goes to th' gym an' I keep my shirt untucked." They are very cute.

I enjoyed Paula much more before she got all...I don't want to say slutty, but...frisky? All she does on her "live" show is flirt with men and make crude jokes.

This fudge recipe has been around forever. My grandmother used to make it. Moderation is the key...just like in all foods.

Here's the nutrition info from Velveeta:

Wow. Would'ya look at all that Vitamin A! Woooo-hooo!

Betcha can't eat just one.

Note the recipe calls that this makes 64 one oz. servings! Paula's were at least 4-5x that size, which is how people at home will make it after watching her. I'm all for individual freedom, to mislead people into thinking that those giant balls of sugar and fat are "fun" is reprehensible. That sort of serving is toxic for many people, and someone should have said so. You wouldn't show how much fun drinking a liter of vodka or smoking a pack of cigarettes are without showing the consequences, but encouraging people at home with serious weight issues to gorge on 1000 calories of processed fat and sugar is fun?

No, seriously it is appalling.

It does get to the point of laugh or cry though.

And I've never seen an overweight person want to not eat something bad for them because of facts or figures - rather it is an internal process of caring for themselves in a healthy way that somehow has to be found.

Eating can be such a complicated thing, particularly for those who might do it to the extent of hurting their health - that a "devil may care" attitude takes over. Saying something is bad simply will not stop them. They know that already.

Maybe running an exercise tape after each cooking section like this on TV would do the trick? :)

best parts of the video are 1) the fact that she was on iron chef and won, thus negating any credibility of the show and 2) the disgusted look on ellen's face.

I have said this before. I think Paula is a dynamic personality. She is a tv personality, a true gem. That being said I cannot cook her food. It is not what I like to serve my family. She is truely blessed and I love her. I even love to watch her cook.

One Sunday morning another club member and I were both using the treadmill at the gym. Paula Deen was on the tv above us. She added something to her dish and both of us gasped. And upped the intensity of our workouts.

It's her fun-loving personality that's makes her show enjoyable.
I love her brand of craziness.

Proof positive that modern pharmacology works.

What no mayo in the recipe?!

I have never watched her show, and I probably never will. I've read a newspaper article about her. I read and enjoy Pioneer Woman; I don't use her recipes except for one that my maiden aunt who lived to be 84 used to cook.
This discussion seems to typify the major neuroses of our time: obsessive control, a corallary obssesion with medical matters, and the idea that food is poison (all this replacing the controls that used to be placed on sexual expression). If I remember what I've read correctly, it is one third of the population that has a problem with cholesterol creation and retention. But this discusion assumes that every one does. For pity sakes, try relaxing about food and sex at the same time. You can do it. Let yourself surrender, if only a bit. Have fun, if only for a moment. You will probably survive another day or two.

I doubt that fudge made with any ingredients is going to wind up healthy.

Weird as it may seem, it's not that bizarre to consider velveeta in a fudge application once you think about it: the flavor is quite mild, but the texture is in the fudge spectrum: smooth, creamy, soft-set at room temperature.

Knowing nothing about making fudge, I wonder what it's substituting. Would the quantity of Velveeta traditionally be filled by butter? Or something else?

I don't often watch Paula Deen, and I rarely make her recipes (if ever), but she's got one thing that a lot of us lack: she doesn't take herself too seriously.

Okay folks, let's get some perspective here. This is FUDGE. It is not something one eats every day, it is not a highly sophisiticated food (or they wouldn't sell it eveywhere in Myrtle Beach!), it is not intended to be nutrious or good for you. It is supposed to be fun and taste good. And this recipe is not all that different from others except for the cheese--which might actually make it better for you than one which is all butter.
I agree--just relax!

I saw this book pre-publication and tried the Velveeta fudge recipe -- my coworkers devoured it in 10 minutes flat and no one had any idea there was Velveeta in it. Nor did I tell them -- I cut the slices way bigger than the serving size, I'm sure! The Velveeta just gives it a super creamy texture. If you're a purist, obvs. avoid, but as people have said above, come on, this is fudge we're talking about, who wants it to be healthy anyway?

And there's Velveeta Pepper Jack for a sort of Chocolate Chipotle Fudge.

The city of Philadelphia actually has a vast underground reserve of Velveeta.

Fact: it's wildcatted with the very same methods they use for crude oil.

Ms.Dean always seems like she has half a load on, my hope is that's really true.

I just made her Velveeta Fudge recipe yesterday. I used a scooper instead of my hands to form small balls. They are delicious "as is" but since I have some Ghirardelli white candy-making chocolate AND walnuts on hand, I may just go ahead and make the fudge balls even more unhealthy... :)

This is surpassed only by deep fried Twinkie.

debralu, lol, and I hope you like them more than Ellen! Good for you...

Life is too short to spend a minute watching gomer pyle in drag on tv.

I have always considered fudge to be a total waste of good chocolate and time. But I really like Velveeta and I LOVE chocolate so I'm going to give it a try. And, yes, many of Paula's recipies are not low fat or anything resembling "health food", but she is entertaining. If you ever watch "Semi-Homade" with Sandra Lee, she always has at least one drink involving alcohol and this doesn't seem to cause the kind of reaction that Velveeta fudge does!

By accident, I did happen to see Dean's show and couldn't believe my eyes: an over-weight, middle-age "kind of trampy" woman with a nausea provoking syrupy southern accent cooking some of the unhealthiest stuff ever!!! Is the Food Network insane? They dropped Emeril but Paula is still promoting heart disease.

some of you people are truly pathetic. she isnt forcing food down your throat. eat what YOU like. its so american to blame someone else for harm that you do to yourself. anything can be bad for you if you abuse it. get a life people. in fact some of you should eat as many of these cheese balls as possible. especially if it shortens your lifespan.

Paula Dean can simply say the word "mayonaise" I practically burst into flames. She is unbearable, her recipes are down right irresponsible (and nasty). Have you seen The Lady's Brunch Burger recipe? Bacon and a fried egg, on top of a burger w/ a glazed donut serving as the bun.

I am not making this up.

bigassbob, all I can say is AMEN! When I began viewing this blog, I loved it. After viewing it daily, I have come to realize some, but fortunately, not all, claim to be serious foodies, while in reality are simply food SNOBS. Lighten up, people! We all are allowed to make CHOICES, and some choose to occasionally make a poor nutritional choice, just for a buttery/cheesy/creamy/chocolatey sensory satisfaction. We don't ALL just eat to live. How boring is that? I had no idea the food police monitored this so closely, yet the same people constantly bad mouth anyone who dares to be different, or shows creativity, no matter how bad the creation. Paula may not be my favorite food personality, but who am I ---- or you, to tear her apart? Save it for those more worthy. You all love and approve of Bourdain, who eats live snake hearts and all manner of strange things, but let that southern lady promote her love of butter and such, and you're ready to lynch her. Ya'll probably secretly have to hide in your closet to enjoy any type of goodie, after all the preaching you do. How much fun are you to live with? You may live long, but not well. Being the serious foodie I am, all this serious talk has me craving something decadent. Maybe I'll whip up a batch of Paula's Velveeta fudge, or her Gorilla cake, or her wonderful blueberry dumplings. Has anyone tried them? Yummy!

Don't eat the damn food if you don't like the content! You are not being forced to make these recipes, nor eat the food. YOU eat what YOU like and the rest of us mature adults will eat what WE like. I am sure that you have eaten a hamburger, french fry or doughnut in your lifetime....well, guess what, you have just eaten a fried cheese and butter ball. It's all the same thing, just a different flavor.

Remember, it is people like you and me who made her famous, not to mention her scrumptious recipes. There is no harm in eating food like this if you ingest in moderation.
