Frozen Guilty (Hot) Pleasures: What Are Yours?

Every year I go to a friend's holiday party. This friend has many wonderful qualities. She is smart, decent, and funny, but not only is she a Republican, she's a vegetarian Republican. And she cares not a whit about food. But this post is not about her vegetarianism or her political beliefs, which don't concern me in the slightest. It is about a couple of things she serves at her holiday party.

Unapologetically, unashamedly, my friend serves frozen pigs in blankets and Totino's Pizza Rolls (she doesn't eat them herself, she just serves them, like the gracious hostess she is). And you know what? Those suckers hit the spot. They're good, in that good/bad way the tastiest processed, politically incorrect foods are. They satisfy in that way that only crunchy, doughy, salty, and hot bad-for-you foods can. The hot is key, I think. Hot is what separates a fine guilty pleasure snack like potato chips from an inspired one like tater tots. If my friend served tater tots as well, I would camp out at her door waiting for the clock to strike eight, when the party begins.

So, Serious Eaters, there you have it. My own personal holy trinity of frozen, guilty, and hot pleasures. What are yours?

Hmmmmmmm, tater tots are at the top of my list. Those mini egg rolls, and mini quiches. Now there's a tasty meal!

That faux chile con queso made with Ro-tel tomatoes and Velveeta served over factory-made tamales or frozen taquitos. And, tater tots taste purt' dang good dipped in it, too!

A couple of days ago, I was at Costco and had a sample of a jalapeno popper. Deep fried, then frozen, then reheated. Heavenly.

I gotta also go with tater tots and the velveeta-salsa dip.

And I don't eat them anymore, but I used to LOVE those pillsbury orange breakfast rolls.

A few years ago, my wife and I got nothing but frozen goodness to tide us through New Year's eve. Crab rangoon, pizza rolls, egg rolls, bagel bites. I know exactly what you're talking about with the frozen convenience foods.

My guilty pleasure is Chinese takeout. I love crab rangoon and General Tso's chicken. Yum! I wrote briefly about it here. Can't go wrong with good (but so bad) American-Chinese cuisine.

Sounds like your friend is a wonderful hostess, who thinks about what her guests (you!) would like, and serves it. I've been known to serve Chinese take-out appetizers as well as chicken satay from the local Thai restaurant. Always a big hit!

Frozen Blintzes. Blueberry. Cheese. Either. Both. :D

That delightful snack that only an industrial machine could produce--tater tots!!!!!

I have to admit -- the "cheeseburger bites" from Buffalo Wild Wings were quite divine the other night (not my choice of venue -- it's where all my drunk passengers wanted to go.). Crispy on the outside with a liquid cheese & burger filling. Kind of like white trash kibbie balls....hurt so good!

I love Amy's frozen meals: lasagna, pizza pockets, palak paneer; let me count the ways...

I've been to fancy bar-mitzvahs and weddings where all sorts of gourmet hors d'oeuvres were served along with pigs in the blanket and the little piggies are always the first to disappear! Let's face it, the frozen, processed prepared frozen food in the freezer case at Costco just can't be beat!

tatter tots! i will not buy them. cannot have them in the house. but there is a bar on W23rd that serves them, that's where i get my fix.

i can't believe taquitos was not the first comment here. they are little, rolled, greasy bits of deliciousness.

Well, they were second in the comments! I can only type so fast...

I don't get it? Where's the guilt in eating pigs in a blanket?

Although they were served at every Bar Mitzvah I ever went to as a child. And Jewish Moms love guilt. Do you think there's a connection?

Totino's or Jeno's pizzas. The crispy crust gets me every time. Bagel Bites are good, too. Must be the nostalgia of them. My sister and I used to share the cardboard frozen pizzas during summer vacation when we just barely old enough to be trusted with oven privileges, and the Bagel Bites remind me of a high school friend. Her mom ALWAYS hand those things on hand and she never seemed to run out of them!

All frozen potato products rule- esp tater tots and waffle fries!

Well, this probably isn't what you meant - but it is frozen and hot and guilt-inducing - hot homemade brownie with peppermint stick ice cream on top. And hot fudge sauce if you wanna go the whole hog.

When I was a kid my mother got some kind of little frozen bacon appetizer thingies. Just once (she didn't buy a lot of convenience foods). They were wicked good. I have no idea what they were but if anybody knows of a frozen bacon appetizer thingy that's yummy, please let me know!

Tag along question...

where do you get the best frozen appetizers? Costco or Trader Joes?

For me, the answer is always Costco.

It seems like I'm an anomaly, but I'm just not a fan of Trader Joes. How does the board feel?

it's been a few years, but i used to have a thing for pizza bagels, and of course, chicken/turkey pot pies.

I second the Pillsbury cinnamon rolls, with the little packet of icing, hot from the oven, mmmmm! I haven't had them in years, I think we will have them for breakfast on New Year's Day!

Although we don't have a Costco, those other places like Price Club and Sam's are able to carry more "manufactured" food than smaller places like Trader Joe's. Besides, I insist that it's all those chemical additives that give those frozen delicacies most of their flavor! Trader Joe's is OK for some things but most of what they carry is organic, all-natural, blah, blah, blah....

My friend and I spent a weekend in Vermont living solely on items culled from the "Big Y" frozen foods section (ok, we may have also purchased a crudite platter). Hands down, the taquitos won. Her husband was horrified. And recently, the most popular items at our office holiday party, other than homemade lasagna, were microwaved vegetarian corn dogs that had been cut up into bite-sized pieces and served with mustard packets. Go figure.

Toaster Strudels with icing. Apple. Man, those are good.

I love Stouffer's French bread pizza. As for Trader Joe's, their selection of Tacquitos is good. Two other frozen snacks they do that are pretty good are tempura veggie "bird's nests" and shrimp wrapped in won ton skins.

Sausage Balls, you know, the ones you make with the bisquick and Jimmy dean sausage and the cheap cheddar. I have to make them myself and then freeze them, but they are my favorite white trash delight, along with the rotel dip of course,

pizza rolls are pretty good.

for some reason though I love those stupidly cheap generic frozen pizzas. sure they're not as good as a hand made pizza or even one from a delivery place, but they taste just like the old school pizzas. honestly, that taste of nostalgia is enough for me.

For years, I ran events at some truly upscale locations; when it came to choosing appetizers, I often had event chairpeople request the pigs in the blankets. If they didn't, inevitably the catering director would tell me they were a must-have (and of course that THEIR pigs in blankets were made w/superior hot dogs and served with good mustard). They were always the item people asked about and inhaled!

Ed, if you love Tater Tots, you have to get to Daddy-O in the W. Village. They serve them with house-made (doctored is my guess) ketchup, and they're totally addictive. Great cocktails there too! It's at 44 Bedford St, corner of Leroy, right off of 7th Avenue South. Trust me!

Another shout out for Pillsbury here: warm orange breakfast rolls, and (the now defunct flavor of) blueberry cream cheese toaster strudels (which I haven't eaten in 7 long years...but who's counting?).

With all this talk of ethnic frozen foods, I started thinking about all these newfangled ethnic frozen hot foods. Has anyone tried the frozen dumplings you can get in a bag or the frozen samosas? The dumplings were pretty darn good. The samosas are next.

Sara Lee used to make a frozen raspberry coffee cake that was a staple at our house every Easter to go with the eggs. I haven't been able to find it anymore though.

I almost always have the Ore Ida brand frozen "country style" fries and onion rings in the freezer.

I also keep a stash of the Pillsbury pie dough in the freezer for those mornings I wake up craving quiche or pot pie.

Elio's Pizza...probably a childhood nostalgia thing

taquitos all the way.
Also, potato skins.

I go to the Asian grocery store and buy Dim Sum dumplings - chicken and vegetable, pork and cabbage.... steam or pan fry with lots of sweet La Choy Duck Sauce (yes... ewwww!). Love it!

We get bags of the frozen pork fried dumplings at Wal-Mart. If you use the frying pan method of cooking they are just as good as your average Chinese restaurant.

I'm going to have to pick some up tonight

I forgot to mention my favorite freezer section item

Sea-Pak brand Popcorn Shrimp

Taquitos
tater tots
cheese filled pretzels
mini corn dogs

ARGH. I hate this website. Now all I want to do is eat taquitos and corndogs which of course is IMPOSSIBLE to find where I am!

Holy nibblies! I love Nancy's frozen quiches. They are very good quality. Also Phillips frozen crab cakes. Those TGI Fridays frozen potato skins. Oh God admitting this is bad. I love pizza rolls too. When we entertain I always try to make most of the nibblies myself. But if time is a concern I will go to Costco and buy some stuff. I did do a business open house 3 years ago where it all came from costco and I used a convention oven to bake it all off. Everyone was happy and we kept the wine flowing.

Taquitos are hands down the best frozen savory guilty pleasure. I could eat half a box in one sitting if I wasn't careful!

I like Bagel Bites and pizza rolls; also, mini pizzas for one for lunch once in a while (my mom used to get them from the Schwan's truck). One of my old coworkers brought vegetarian taquitos to a party, and they were so good and more tasty than regular taquitos. I didn't even notice they were filled with fake beef!
I used to love the El Monterey frozen burritos. I got the beef, bean and green chile ones, and when they were almost done cooking, I'd put a slice of cheddar cheese on top. Yum. I have a problem with most frozen burritos, especially "healthy" kinds because they have a weird aftertaste (as do most frozen meals, in my opinion!).

Totino's pizza, tater tots, and the orange rolls :)

We are having a Christmas potluck tonight, and now all I want to serve is a variety of frozen appetizers, even though we have a pork loin brining in our fridge, too funny!!!!

I love frozen eggrolls and crab rangoons. But my all time favorite frozen food is the lean cuisine stuffed cabbage roll with mashed potatoes on the side. It is remarkably good.

I LOVE the Thai Vegetable dumplings from Trader Joe's...I usually boil them in some chicken stock, adding ginger, a can of water chestnuts, and some baby bok choy. Instant soup!

It sounds as if Trader Joe's is a treasure trove of frozen hot guilty pleasures. And it sounds like Costco is also a terrific source of frozen hot guilty deliciousness.

For me it is a toss up between Jalapeno' Poppers and mini egg rolls.

Tater tots like the rest of the crew and, to add to the Costco/Trader Joe's debate, I LOVE raspberry and brie filo rolls from TJ's.

sara lee banana cake!!!

Marie Callender's used to have this frozen chicken with rice, broccoli, and cheese sauce. Holy cow, it was so freaking good. I spent one year subsisting on this dish, plus frozen french bread pizzas and spaghetti-o's. It's a miracle I survived.

Crab rangoon, no contest! But tater tots, jalapeƱo poppers and Swiss Colony petit fours all rate highly.

You know, I just don't get the tater tot thing. But that's probably because I only tried them the first time last year and don't have the childhood associations. That said:

Ore-Ida Toaster Hash Browns are heaven. I love them. I actually like them more than McDonalds hash browns, which is saying something.

Stouffer's Deluxe French Bread Pizza

And my all time favorite - Tower Isles Spicy Jamaican Meat Patties (I'm actually a little surprised not to see anyone pick them.)

once in a while I needs me some tater tots with ketchup mixed with tabasco. And Trader Joe's frozen veggie corn dogs are a gift from above!! Joe's non dairy blintzes are awesome as well, especially if you're lactose intolerant (like me). I'm also partial to the frozen safeway mushroom garlic pizza.

One year, my grandmother ordered New Year's dinner entirely from Neiman Marcus. I don't want to know how expensive it was, but there were things on phyllo dough, crab cakes, some kind of soup, and cheesecake 'lollipops'. But none of us cared about that because there was a lemon chiffon cake sitting half-thawed in the fridge. We used cheap silverware and bent fork tines trying to stuff chewy, sweet, silky chunks in our mouths. YOM.
