Sick with the flu? If you have enough energy to get out of bed, make yourself a cup of ginger honey lemon tonic to speed up your recovery. Just boil one cup of water with chopped ginger and a lemon wedge and add honey to taste. This drink is good all throughout the winter, whether or not you're sick. More, on The Kitchn »
Homemade candy gifts: "Divinity is a whipped confection of egg whites and sugar. It's cheap to make and so good. You will definitely need a stand mixer, though, and a candy thermometer. If you have those two things these are easy. They were one of our first forays into candy-making and a perennial favorite." More, on The Kitchn »
Tips for keeping pie crust from shrinking: "After rolling out your dough on a piece of wax or parchment paper, make sure your dough is nice and dry on the underside and is not sticking to the paper anywhere; slide the paper/dough onto a rimless baking sheet and place it back in the fridge for about 20 or 30 minutes before attempting to fit the dough into your pie plate or tart pan." Yeast-raised cornbread: "We were immediately intrigued by this Yeast-raised Cornbread by Heidi of 101 Cookbooks. It looked different - a cornbread that wasn't cakey or heavy. This is made with a yeast dough, unlike most cornbreads, which are quick breads leavened with baking powder." More, on The Kitchn »
Kitchen love and service gifts: "Give the gift of a kitchen deep-clean - surely we would all love to find this under the tree? Wrap up two sponges and a bottle of Mrs. Meyers' Lemon Verbena Cleaner and attach a coupon for one afternoon or weekend kitchen deep-clean. Cupboards, floors, mats, fridge, freezer - to have them all cleaned by someone else would be a treat." More, on The Kitchn »

Does anyone know a good way to store ginger root for a while so it doesn't go bad? Seems to me I remember reading a way that involved chopping it into a jar of....vinegar? or something.......can't recall...and storing it in the fridge where it'll stay good for a long while. Anyone...?

I freeze ginger root, intact, skin and all. I do break it into smaller pieces so I don't have to break my hand when I need a small piece. When you need a piece, simply remove it from the ziplock freezer bag and leave it on the counter a few minutes. Use a veggie peeler to remove skin, same as always and chop or grate.

This is my exact recipe for when I get colds! I love drinking it right when I feel a cold coming on. It's also excellent for settling a sour stomach or stopping motion sickness/nausea in its tracks.
For storing ginger, I just buy a large knob of it every few months and keep it in the freezer. It's very easy to peel using a spoon (just try scraping the skin off with the tip of the spoon) and then I grate the still frozen ginger using my microplane.
I also just read something where someone grated their peeled ginger on a microplane and rolled the paste into a very thin tube of parchment paper to freeze. When they needed ginger, they would just break off an inch or two of the frozen ginger stick.

btw if you add some sprigs of frest thyme to the tea while it is brewing it will also help you sleep.

my potion for when I am getting a cold is to mix in a blender some honey, lemon juice and the clear gel inside a aloe vera "leaf". And if I feel a cough, put in a little piece of onion too. With the onion the taste changes a bit, but it WORKS!!!
