Win Your Thanksgiving Turkey!

Do you know where you're getting your turkey this year? Not yet? Then we've got a contest for you! The good folks at D'Artagnan are providing us with a turkey a day to give away to one lucky Serious Eats reader from today until Sunday, November 18.*

20071109dartagnan.pngD'Artagnan is a purveyor of many things delicious—from pâtés to sausages, foie gras to wild mushrooms, game meat to truffles. But what we're especially interested in right now is their turkey.

D'Artagnan's certified organic birds are fed organic grains and pure spring water—no protein supplements, added poultry or fish byproducts, pesticides or herbicides. Additionally no antibiotics, no growth hormones. The result is a poultry with great flavor, tenderness, and a 25 percent lower fat content than standard commercially raised turkey.

We will be giving away 12- to 14-pound organic free-range birds for the duration of the contest. Contest open only to participants in the continental U.S.

Win a Turkey

To enter to win, just answer the following question in the comments below:

Who gets to break the wishbone in your house?

One (1) winner will be chosen at random from among the commenters. Feel free to enter every day, but you may win only once during the lifetime of the contest. Comments for this entry will be open until noon ET tomorrow (Nov. 12). The standard Serious Eats contest rules apply.

*Sorry, but we have to limit shipping to the continental U.S. Birds will be shipped from D'Artagnan no later than Monday, November 19.

The youngest at the table

i do actually

Whoever remembers where it is after it dries out for a few days or weeks...

Our family has always taken turns with the wishbone, and my youngest daughter always knows whose turn it is!

It used to be the youngest, but I believe the one from last year is still waiting somewhere...

Whoever wants it the most! ...which is always my husband.

My little sister and I

The hostess, over dessert and the games.

Either one of us.

it is rotational

Whoever cooked it.

we roll a die for it!

The kids, who each grab a side and pull.

Usually whoever remembers it is there.

whoever wants to really.

We have a number drawing. The two that are closest to the number picked gets to break the wishbone.

Nobody in my family does it.

whoever gets to it first

The youngest in the house - usually, my younger brother and myself!

(and there's always a fight over the "proper" and "fair" grips to use when breaking the wishbone)

Most of the time, nobody does. We're usually too stuffed to think about it.

Whoever thinks of it first.

the cook chooses

Whoever wants to.

Usually me :)

Whoever cooks the bird gets to choose the pullers of the wishbone. However, it's traditional to dry it out overnight and pull it the following day.

We used to do when everyone was younger, but we don't do that anymore. They got saved up so that we could do a few at a time (3 siblings)

Usually the ones that make the turkey stock get to do the wishbone - me and my mother-in-law.

Whoever wants it

My sister and I used to but I can't remember the last time we did. I'll make a point of it this year!

My little sister and I...when Mom remembers to save it!

It's usually the youngest two, who are 11 and 16.

We break this year's bone to determine who breaks it next year! No, complete lie. Usually it's the youngest person at the table, and the winner gets the first piece of pie. And usually the second!

whoever debones the turkey - she also always gets to pick which side to hold onto - so you know I never win...

My son and me, while my vegetarian daughter looks the other way :)

whomever has the guts to help wash and dry after that extravaganza!

Hmm. I don't think we've ever dug out the wishbone. I guess technically I get to break it,since I'm the one doing the carving.

That's a tradition we never adopted in my home, so nobody breaks the wishbone..

My 2-year old and his uncle.

The oldest and the youngest at the table always get to at my house.

I share the wishbone with my grandson.

I love his giggle when he "wins".

The chef (which is usually my mother) and the person of their choosing (which is usually myself).

Whoever helps with the dishes.

It rotated between us three kids...but I'm pretty sure as the oldest, I missed my turn a few times.

My daughter and I.

we usually put it on the window sill to dry out, forget about it, then throw it away in a week...

White....but after reading thru the comments for the past few days, just might venture a few slices of dark this year.... :)

whoever carved the turkey.

When I was young it was always my mom and dad. But this is my first year to have my own Thanksgiving so I'll definitely be on one side of that bone!

The cook. This year, that's me.

the youngest & the oldest

I always break it!! :))

Always the little'uns.

The one that cooks the bird gets to decide if it doesn't get broken apart when prepping....

I always let the wishbone dry for a couple of days then let my two girls have at it . They are now 29 and 22 years old and they still play tug of war with it . LOL

myself and my wife. our daughter is too young right now.

Has anybody tried a Lucky Break Wishbone? There's no waiting for it to dry and no fighting over it because there are now plenty to go around. And they're Proudly Made in the USA. Check it out! Happy Thanksgiving Evryone. http://www.LuckyBreakWishbone.com

Whoever finds the wishbone at our house gets to break it with whomever else they decide on. It's always interesting when we forget about it first.

Whoever hosts Thanksgiving dinner

the 2 youngest at the table

Whomever finds it first!!

We don't break the wishbones.

The garbage can.

Superstition! We don't break wishbones. We have a friend who has a candle-lit chandelier in his second home that is festooned with unbroken wishbones. So we dry it off and send it to him.

Mom & the baby.

my daughters fight over it.

I has always been my thing... even when my mom would just make roasted chicken, that piece was my special piece.

We have no special ritual for dealing with the wishbone. Frankly, we're just grateful if my 25 year old son doesn't eat it.

The person who cares enough to get it. Surprisingly often, no one goes for the wishbone.

Cook's choice...usually the younger kids get to fight over it.

generally it's me who requests the wishbone. no one else really cares, but i like the tradition.

I have twin nephews and the tradition is that they get the wishbone. Even now, when they're soon to graduate from high school, they're still enthusiastic about it.

My sci-tech son, David, figured out the wishbone trick when he was about four. He knew that whoever held it at the highest point shifted the fulcrum balance so they would win the break. Consequently, he always has the honor of breaking the wishbone---

The children always get to break the wishbone. It is a contest between two at our house to see who gets the longer end.

no one really cares about the wishbone at our house, the fight is over the turkey tail.

little cousins

the youngest always breaks the wishbone!

My son and I for the past 25 years! Happy Thanksgiving!

Our two kids get the honors

Normally my husband and I do but our 3 year old niece is visiting this year so all bets are off!

Somehow my kids have never really gotten the "wishbone thing," maybe because it's not something my wife or her family seem to do. So, since I grew up with full-family competition for the wishbone, I'm lucky that way - I get dibs on the wishbone without so much as a whisper of protest. OTOH, it's much more likely that the wishbone will be cut or broken, since no one but me cares about it. And then, of course, I have to convince one of the kids that the breaking and wishing on the wishbone ritual might be cool - if for no other reason than to humor me.

We remove it, clean it off a bit, and put it in the freezer. On New Year's Day, the cook and the cleaner-upper will make a new year wish and then compete accordingly.

It seems that we've forgone this tradition of yore. Typically it ends up drying out on the counter, falling behind clutter only to be found a year later. I think last year, I just tossed it out with the carcass after I made stock.

Usually the youngest gets the right to the wishbone. It used to be my favorite part of Thanksgiving when I was young, then I started to focus on the food instead.

Whoever calls it first. Kinda like calling shotgun when getting into a car.

Usually it's my sister & I.

I do of course, I am the one who cooks it!

...cook, chef, culinary sponge, traveler, volunteer, missionary.
tyronebcookin

the guest of honor or the eldest guest

I almost always forget about it until I'm getting ready to put the turkey in the frig. Then I usually share it with whoever is in the kitchen with me.

MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

With seven children in this house along with a hubby who is a child at heart on some things... it's the first person that finds the wishbone and whoever he or she asks to break it with them.

I would lvoe to win a turkey for us this year! Blogged ya: http://laurawilliamsmusings.blogspot.com/2007/11/sunday-edition-of-contests-galore_11.html

Thanks for the great giveaway!

We only have one child at this point who is old enough to understand the process, so its usually him and either Mommy or Daddy. Starting next year or so, its going to be more of a fight to see which of his younger twin brothers gets the other stick.

Oooh, an organic turkey would be AWESOME! Thanks for the chance to win!

1) Whoever finds it and 2) The person that first notices that the wishbone is found

The wishbone generally goes to the youngest person there. However, the last few years have been adults-only, and we are way too competitive to just let them have it. Now it goes to whoever finds it first and whoever they want to challenge.

whoever gets to it first!

Our daughter Clair, who will be home from college for Thanksgiving.

My niece and nephew, who happen to be the youngest grandkids.

Usually the youngest family member who is able...it is considered an honor in our family :-)

We always gave it to the youngest also.

grandma and whomever she chooses

My Dad used to break it when we were little but when we got older he would make my brother and I fight over it.

The youngest.

The person with the best (completely improbable, funny & bad) bad luck story gets the honor. Give to those who need it.

Whoever cooked the turkey gets to break the wishbone, with a co-breaker of their choice.

The youngest two people at my table get to pull apart the wishbone. Unless it somehow gets demolished during the carving!

the young'uns

I let the kids do it.

The youngest kids in our family get to split the wishbone.

Everyone usually forgets about it except for my mom and me.

whoever remembers it, after letting it dry for a couple of days.

Yeah - the wishbone usually hangs from the window opener for, oh, 3 months or so. Then whosoever remembers it gets to break it with the person who happens to be there at the time.

I've never been present at a Thanksgiving where this was done.

my daughter and my wife.

Me. My Birthday is usually celebrated on Thanksgiving. They feel guilty for never having a birthday cake and instead putting candles in whatever the pie happens to be.

My fiancee and I

the youngest

Unfortunately no one now. When the little ones get older they will.

Do you know that I've never EVER broken a wishbone...I will be cooking my very first turkey this weekend for a pre-Thanksgiving potluck, so we'll just have to see about me getting to break my very first wishbone.

the scavenger who picks at the carcass while everyone else is passed out (me).

The honor falls to the person who cleans the carcass willingly - so usually their wish is that someone else will start the clean up...

If we host Thanksgiving at our home, my two teenage sons break the wishbone. If my sister has Thanksgiving, her two daughters do the honors. Please enter me in your wonderful contest. Thanks, Cindi

My brother and I duke it out every year!

Whoever decides to throw it out after it sits next to the sink "drying" for a week or two.

No one at this point. The family was scattered and the tradition died out. I'm happy this came up. Now that most of us are in one city again, I think I will start it up again. It was always the youngest and the cook. The cook always let the youngest win.

I usually break it when I carve the turkey...

Whoever cooks the turkey!

Years ago, my youngest sibling at the table; these days, no one.

My two daughters

My cousins.

And we have a winnah!
