Win Your Thanksgiving Turkey!

Do you know where you're getting your turkey this year? Not yet? Then we've got a contest for you! The good folks at D'Artagnan are providing us with a turkey a day to give away to one lucky Serious Eats reader from today until Sunday, November 18.*

20071109dartagnan.pngD'Artagnan is a purveyor of many things delicious—from pâtés to sausages, foie gras to wild mushrooms, game meat to truffles. But what we're especially interested in right now is their turkey.

D'Artagnan's certified organic birds are fed organic grains and pure spring water—no protein supplements, added poultry or fish byproducts, pesticides or herbicides. Additionally no antibiotics, no growth hormones. The result is a poultry with great flavor, tenderness, and a 25 percent lower fat content than standard commercially raised turkey.

We will be giving away 12- to 14-pound organic free-range birds for the duration of the contest. Contest open only to participants in the continental U.S.

Win a Turkey

To enter to win, just answer the following question in the comments below:

White or dark meat?

One (1) winner will be chosen at random from among the commenters. Feel free to enter every day, but you may win only once during the lifetime of the contest. Comments for this entry will be open until noon ET tomorrow (Nov. 11). The standard Serious Eats contest rules apply.

*Sorry, but we have to limit shipping to the continental U.S. Birds will be shipped from D'Artagnan no later than Monday, November 19.

White meat the first day and dark the second! :)

Both. And a wing.

I have to go with dark

White, white, white for me, and dark, dark, dark for spouse. And the youngest at the table gets his/her picture taken with a wing, for posterity. This custom goes back to 1949 in our family.

And, this Thanksgiving, among other things, I am very grateful for all the folks at SE who keep us updated on not only the important stuff like food recalls, but on the fun stuff that makes life so sweet.

White meat, and any dark meat I can sneak away from my husband.

white meat

White meat. Mostly anyway. I'm not too picky when it comes to Thanksgiving.

White. With just a little bit of dark on the side.

White meat during the Thanksgiving meal, then in subsequent days, dark meat & warm stuffing sandwiches with mayonaise.

Absolutely Dark! No matter how careful you are, the white meat always comes out too dry for me, and I've tried all the tricks to try and keep it moist...
So, GO DARK!

Dark meat, easily. My dad used to hot smoke a whole turkey for Thanksgiving, while my mom roasted two whole, still attached, bone-in turkey breasts; the majority of my family went for the white meat, and my father and I got all the dark meat we wanted.

Well, yesterday I was in the mood for dark meat. Today white meat sounds great. With plenty of gravy.

Definitely white meat!

Dark for me...

Delicious Dark meat :)

Dark meat!

Definitely dark meat, the thigh is the absolute best!

White, please. (It's just a vehicle for the gravy anyhow.)

white all the way

Oh, totally white meat...

Definitely dark.

Wait, it comes in two kinds? Who knew? I like my turkey like my bread -- white!

Definitely white, but with a good gravy.

Dark, for sure dark...

Yes, please. And thank you very much. (does that count as an answer?) Happy Thanksgiving to everyone at Serious Eats! (Does brown-nosing improve my chances? Just askin' ...)

Mmmm....give me white meat!

White meat, but to be perfectly honest, I like the stuffing more than the turkey.

Dark, of course! I love turkey. ;o)

dark meat is by far the best.

Dark meat, no question!

Always dark meat!

dark meat please!

Dark all the way. Just give me the damn drumstick.

White meat. With lots of gravy. Thanks for making me drool on my keyboard. :)

Mite wheat...er...white meat! :)

I'm a sucker for the dark meat. Especially the "oysters." Which is what my mom calls the little piece of meat on the inside of the pelvic bone. It's the most tender and delicious piece of meat on the whole bird!

Yes!

I prefer dark 90% of the time. Hubby prefers white. But white tastes best on sandwiches for me.

Both.

Usually I say WHITE...But this year I am going to try to eat dark!

Dark with cranberry sauce, white with gravy. The hell with moderation.

Dark, but no legs, thighs! and the skin.

White meat, but only when Grandma cooks it.

White meat

Dark and Wings

Dark, eaten with your fingers, standing over the carving tray.

white during the first meal, dark when room temperature toward the end of the meal, and a combination slathered in gravy and mashies on bread the next day.

You guys are some kind of turkey racists!!!

This is my contest entry.

I've always loved the white meat, but as I get older I find myself being drawn towards the dark side. The dark meat seems to have more flavor (could it be all the extra fat in it ?) and always seems to be a lot more moist. However slices of white meat covered in lettuce, tomato, mayo and a shake of salt & pepper between two slices of bread can't be beat!

definately dark!

Dark meat on Turkey Day and the white meat the following day as a sandwich with either cranberry sauce or gravy.Let the feasting, food coma, and napping begin.

When I was a child, I only ate white meat, but a few overcooked turkeys cured me of that.

Now I prefer dark meat.

First one of the wings, with its nice crispy skin, then white meat.

BOTH! If the white meat is dry, I cover it with gravy and cranberry sauce. Well, even if it isn't dry, I still eat it with gravy and cranberries. and stuffing. My mouth is watering now.

Still dark...

white meat for me, please!

Both, please.

White meat for about the last 20 years. Before that it was the drumstick.

not even close - dark meat!

Still white meat!

How about some foie gras to go with that turkey dinner?
Perhaps an appetizer? yummy

Dark. White is an optional side dish...at best

white meat only, please.

Usually white meat, but I'm thinking of doing the legs as confit with duck fat this year. Could be a pivotal time for me.

A little bit of both for me. The boyfriend takes most of the dark!

definitely dark...pick me, pick me!

Typically white but last year we grilled turkey thighs for Thanksgiving and they were to die for. Dark meat is definitely more tasty and juicy.

white for dinner. dark for sammiches.

White first, then lots (and lots!) of dark.

Dark. The fact that dark makes for better leftovers just says how delicious it is overall.

Gotta stick with white.

Dark meat...I roast my bird upside down, so the dark meat skin is crisp, too!

No contest - dark!

Dark meat preferred, white meat in a pinch.

Dark meat, hells yes!

Dark meat for me!!! and like MeganRuth, I too love the oyster part..its the best in flavor, tenderness and juice!!! My little man loves the white meat. We then eat both the white and dark in sandwiches, quesidellias, and casseroles. I love turkey baked, fried or smoked....I guess I am what I eat......shuussssh! The kids will hear.
Deb

White meat with fabulous gravy!!!

White for me... looking at using the grill this year...

Dark meat all the way. White meat is just...bleh

White meat. But I'm known to eat the dark meat scraps also. I'm a pig.

both. i can't choose!

Definitely dark at the table. Shred the white for sammiches during the rest of the week!

Dark meat, definitely.

Dark for me, white for the in-laws.

dark always!

dark, of course!

Dark meat always!

I like both white and dark meat equally!

white meat smothered with gravy, save the dark meat for the turkey pot pies!

White Meat, Baby!!!!!!!!! To Steven Groves Grilling is definitely the way to go. So, so tasty. The meat tastes even better the next day.

Dark! Dark, dark with gravy on toast.

Dark, please.
Cyn

Definitely dark.

Dark meat for sure - theres nothing better than some dark meat with the greasiest pan drippings you can make.

I used to love dark only, but now that I've discovered free-range
fresh turkeys, I love both white and dark! No brining bs either, they taste
great totally al fresco! Try it!

dark all the way.

Dark meat for sure.

white meat for me!

Just dark today.

white meat w/stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce please

white , white & more white !!!!!!!!

Dark and dark again.

White meat for me!

Dark, and free-range

Dark--the meat, err, is sweeter closer to the bone.

I like my turkey like I like my ... uh, chocolate. Dark.

Dark, thighs are the best!

Have always preferred white, but sometimes I'll chop up the dark meat for a thick gravy.. Not a big fan of using the innards for gravy..

still salivating, thinking of the first bite of the drumstick...

And we have a winner!

Beccat, come on down!

Someone from Serious Eats will be contacting you shortly to get shipping info. Congrats!
