Photo of the Day: Pre-Poached Eggs

potd-poachedeggs.jpg

La Petite Americaine came across a shocking item at her local Parisian supermarket: pre-poached eggs. Because there just isn't enough time to leave an egg in a pot of simmering water for three minutes these days.

Of course, she couldn't get away with being in the presence of poached eggs-in-a-box without actually trying them. So she did, with questionable results.

Last year in Brussels I saw these at the grocery store: creme patissiere and creme anglaise in boxes and pre-made pate feuilletee and pate brisee. It says a lot, that people still wanted to make and eat things like quiche and pastries, but just don't have the time to do all the prep work.

Wellll, I'd say creme anglaise takes more effort than poaching an egg (and I've bought pre-made pate brisee before because, yes, I have the lazies)...

I'm gonna poach an egg now.

this is so sick that i think edith massey would be disgusted.

I know a lot of non-French people have this romantic notion that French people only eat (or buy) wonderful food, but I've found some of the vilest packed food I've ever encountered at French supermarkets...and I always visit supermarkets wherever I travel. Stuff like canned cassoulet that had odd, pale sausages in it that looked eerily like fingers...

@Maki: Ah yes, I've seen those cans of cassoulet!...kind of odd. "That must resemble cassoulet only in the most vague sense, like a third cousin three times removed."

Prompted by this photo I tried poaching eggs for the first time last night. It was ridiculously easy! And I'm not good a cooking, so anyone could do it.

I think pre-poached eggs are a great idea!

Now, if only they made pre-toasted bread I could heat up in my toaster I'd have time for breakfast!

srhcb, you need one of these
