Surfas: L.A.'s Go-To Shop for Hard-to-Find Food and Cookware
I lived in Los Angeles for awhile, but I never heard of 70-year-old Surfas, which is the ultimate food and cookware shop in the City of Angels.
What will you find there?
Their shelves hold up to 64 types of mustard, 30 varieties of salt, small-batch smoked meats from tiny farms across the South, every type of bakeware imaginable and a range of pots large enough to serve as hiding places for a toddler or two, and that’s just for starters.

Surfas is pretty awesome. It was on my 10 minute drive from my apartment to my internship this summer. Not only do they have incredible food and cookware, but they also have a nice little cafe which was really good for a quick breakfast.

I've been doing some comparison shopping on-line to see how Surfas' prices compare to other people. For Alziari Olive Oil, Surfas sells the 1 liter tin for 34.95 and the half liter tin for 23.95. Citarella, a gourmet store in Manhattan, sells the half liter for 19.95 and the 1 liter for 34.95. Zingermans.com sells the one liter tin for $45. Chefshop.com sells the half liter tin for $24.99. Interesting stuff.
