It looked to me as if there was some sort of mystic rite going on between them and the girl in the background of the photo, who is calling out to them in a language unknown to other humans.
In the next scene, they all fly up and out into the air towards her, right into her outheld arms.
Into the sky they rise together, girl and shrimps, off to a greater destiny.
Naturally the mussels are left behind. Sad, droopy, green to the gills and even a bit sandy as angry grit gathers in their tearducts.
