Win Two Passes to the Big Apple Barbecue Party

20060604ribs.jpg

20070604babbp.pngThanks to the good folks at Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group, we're giving away two Bubba Passes to the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party taking place this Saturday and Sunday in New York City.

And that's just the tip of the ribs, because the winners will be personally escorted around the event by none other than Serious Eats overlord (and serious 'cue lover) Ed Levine. Ed will introduce you to some of the incredibly talented pit masters and yarn-spinners gathering in New York City's Madison Square Park. You'll chew the fat with legendary 'cue men Mike Mills of the 17th Street Bar and Grill, Chris Mills and Don McLemore of Big Bob Gibson's, and North Carolina pit master Ed Mitchell.

And that's not all. Our lucky winners will also receive what Serious Eats considers the essential 'Cue Lover's Library:

  • Peace, Love and Barbecue by Mike Mills and Amy Mills Tunncliffe
  • Smokestack Lightning by Lolis Eric Elie and Frank Stewart
  • Legends of Texas Barbecue by Robb Walsh

But, wait! There's more! Our winners will receive all kinds of barbecue stuff, including sauces, rubs, and anything else Serious Eats deems worthy that we can get our hands on.

To enter to win this barbecue fantasy, simply comment on this post by naming your favorite barbecue joint. Typical Serious Eats contest rules apply. Commenting will be open until Thursday at 6 p.m. ET. We'll announce the winner Friday morning.

I'm a big Dinosar BBQ in harlem fan...not too dry...not so saucy...just perfect..

The BBQ shack in UCity (St Louis Area)!

I cannot choose but one: The Salt Lick Barbecue Restaurant, Driftwood, TX; Smitty's (formerly Kreuz's Market), Lockhart, TX; Dreamland BBQ, Tuscaloosa, AL; Cook's Barbecue, Lexington, NC; Artz Ribs, Austin, TX (because it is in the neighborhood I grew up in); and Mitchell's Barbecue Restaurant, Wilson, NC would be on there too if the man could open up a restaurant again. I want some of all of it right now.

Besides most of the spots in the TX Hillcountry, for NYC BBQ, when they are at at their best, the Hogpit's pulled pork rules. They haven't been at their best of late tho... :(

It doesn't get much attention from the nyc bbq community, and it hasn't been particularly great lately, but I'm still going to have to go with the Hog Pit. They've got pretty solid pulled pork (with the little smokey burnt edges) and delicious cheese grits that you just can't find outside of the south. Yum!

VIRGILS on 44th STREET, bar none.

Best ribs in town, dry (not drenched in sauce to cover poorer quality meat), tasty, meaty, plain good and consistently so.

outside NYC: Wilbur's in Goldboro, NC

within NYC: I've tried just about everywhere and the pork ribs at Fette Sau are insanely good; my favorite

Silver Oak Bistro
Ridgewood NJ

Chef Gary is cooking up some of the best barbecue/Southern inspired food in the area. Ribs, pulled pork, spicy corn on the cob, cole slaw, bbq empanadas....mmmmm

In the five boroughs...I'd say my vote goes to the pulled pork sandwich at Pies 'n thighs.

Because although I've traveled through most of our southern states, I didn't really eat meat so much till I met Bill, haha. Sorry animurs. :O/

Moonlite BBQ, Owensboro,KY

The Salt Lick, Austin, Texas

Daisy May's for NYC. Oh man.

Outside of NYC, I have a soft place in my heart for the now non-existent Billy Bob Jack's in Ithaca.

The County Line in San Antonio, TX. For NY places, the Smoke Joint.

NYC's R.U.B. has some fantastic burnt brisket, enough to make my mouth water.

I’m a sucker for Ash Creek Saloon in Bridgeport CT. I’ve been eating those ribs for years, and they’ve always treated me right.

My favorite though is Red Hot & Blue is the Roslyn section of Virginia, right across the Key bridge. Many heart attacks occurred in that place.

Outside NYC: Hog Heaven in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. It's on Highway 17. The pulled pork and ribs are amazing.

Inside NYC: I'm partial to the Smoke Joint in Fort Greene because Ben, the owner, is always incredibly friendly to folks, like me, who share his first name. The good food helps too.

in NYC: Daisy May's
NYC area: Big W's in Wingdale, NY
outside: Salt Lick

Abosolutely Cooper's Pit BBQ on Hwy 87 in Mason, TX.

I'm new to the city, so I have to go with Stones and Bones in Merrillville, Indiana. I love my ribs!

Outside NYC: The Carolina Smokehouse in Cashiers, NC.

Inside NYC: Fette Sau in Williamsburg.

Does the winner get round-trip air fare, from, say, the Caribbean?

Inside NY: Dinosaur- Chicken Wings, Watermellon salad
Outside: Kruetz Market- Brisket, Beef Ribs

In NYC: Daisy May's.
Outside: Probably the salt lick, I love their hot links.

Daisy May's for me...

I must admit I love Blue Smoke in NYC. But I've been away on business to Dallas , and ate in a number of nondescript barbecue joints that were awesome. It's shame I can't recall the names.

I kinda wish I knew... I've tried to go to the BBQ fest for the past couple of years and have waited in line and waited in line and waited in line and been shut out every single time...

Except once when I got a sandwich at Salt Lick that I ate in one gulp because I was so hungry that I can't even remember if it was good or not. By that time it was simply sustenance.

So I have to go with my own, which isn't real bbq because I don't have a backyard for a barbecue so I have to make mine in the oven . It's delicious... but I bet the stuff at the Block Party's better!

Blue Smoke for the sides
Daisy May's for the cue
The Smoke Joint because its the best in Brooklyn

Duck Deli, Corolla, NC

The Salt Lick is the best. There's no bbq like a family style meal with your friends out in Driftwood.

Opies Barbecue in Spicewood, TX is really good too.

For the childhood memories only, and not necessarily for the quality of the food, I am going with Carson's ribs in Chicago. Sentimentality wins this one for me, mostly because i just haven't found a bbq place in NYC that thrills me enough.

in NYC, daisy may's --- hands down...sticky fingers and all!

Dinosaur BBQ all the way!

My favorite joint is on Kauai. It's called Scotty's Beach Side BBQ. Great food, unbelievable view. A total pleasure.

as i'm in nyc, the burnt ends, cornbread and beans at r.u.b.

Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem
although the Pork Snoot a couple of years back was pretty tasty!

In 1978 when i was 10, my family of 5 along with 2 dogs set out in a van for New Mexico for a little vacation. Along the way there and back we stopped at (at least) 2 barbacue places that I can remeber - Lexington Barbacue and Arthur Bryants. Even at 10 yrs old I noticed the different regional styles of barbacue and I loved both places - that was my introduction to barbacue and I always look back!!

Dude. Corky's BBQ in Memphis, TN is the closest I've come to BBQ nirvana. I could eat Corky's for the rest of my (admittedly, it would be quite short) life, and be happy.

Within NYC, I really enjoy the pulled pork sandwich at Daisy May's, and their cart is conveniently located near work!

I'm a recent convert to RUB. The lack of sauce makes me happy.

daisy mays is awesome!

I've been to Dinosaurs twice, and I loved the ribs there. And the mac & cheese.

R.U.B., among the places in NYC, for the St. Louis ribs, pulled pork, and burnt ends.

Daisy May is pretty good.

Melvin's in Mount Pleasant, SC has wonderful dry rubbed ribs - very meaty.

In NYC, Fette Sau is the best BBQ, the beef ribs were huge and tender, the brisket had just the right amount of fat & the porks ribs were sweet & smokey. And the Rub was seasoned perfectly, no condiments needed!!!

In Texas, The Salt Lick is an amazing family style bbq experience!! would love to know their recipe for their savory-sweet bbq sauce...i'm dreaming about it now:)

Silver Oak Bistro
Ridgewood NJ

Blue Smoke in NYC

County Line in San Antonio and Rendezvous in Memphis (touristy I know, but the ribs were good and had a fun time). Lots of others really.

I'm adding another vote for the Salt Lick - that and learning how to two-step at the Broken Spoke were the highlights of my Austin trip.

Daisy May's
Just had two pork butts for my birthday. Awesome stuff.

I have to say that I love HOG PIT...their mac and cheese is the stuff of legend, and the pulled pork is pretty great too. Yum!

The Hog Pit for sure. I love sitting in a dive bar eating great BBQ. LOVE IT.

for pure texas pig awesomeness, my favorite bbq joint is vera's backyard bbq near brownsville.

http://www.internetcyberplace.com/RESTAUR/TEXAS/BROWNV/VERA//index.htm

Dinosaur or Blue Smoke. But willing to try the others.

In NYC: Daisy Mays
Outside: I'm obsessive about Fat Matts in Atlanta.

Big fan of R.U.B

My backyard. I don't go out to eat too often but I did try Blue Smoke once and walked out of there severely disappointed...I'd rather save the cash and make it myself. That's not to say my BBQ is the best ever, it's just what I happen to like! The only BBQ I've had outside of NYC was at Big W's which was pretty good...Never been to the Block Party but have been wanting to go for so long and have always wanted to try BBQ from TN, TX, etc to see what real BBQ is all about!

Sweatman's in Holly Hill, SC (birthplace of Willie Randolph!)

Sweatman's in Holly Hill, SC (birthplace of Willie Randolph!)

Blue Smoke, always.

NYC: Daisy May's
Outside: Goode Co. Houston, TX (pulled pork. . .)

Smitty's. The.Best.Ever.

I love Sonny's BBQ in the South! They make their pulled pork sandwich on Texas Toast and they have the best corn nuggets and fried okra. I also love their sweet sauce - every bbq joint should have a special sweet sauce.

In NY, I'll take Dinosaur BBQ over the competition anyday.

Blue Smoke!

Hands down, Arthur Bryant's.

rendezvous- memphis
mmmmmmm

in nyc: dino bbq or pulled pork from pioneer in red hook

In NYC: Blue Smoke
In North Carolina: Lexington #2

blue smoke hands down!

I'd have to go with Dinosaur BBQ

Blue Smoke! Great BBQ, Great Beer & Great service

I first ate at Arthur Bryants when Mr. Bryant was still alive. I told the person that I was with that the ends were free. She said "thats the best part" She was right. On another trip someone told me to go to Gates. I took my first bite and thought I would cry because I wasn't at Arthur Bryants. I would like to see if someone in the Big Apple can take me back to Arthur Bryants.

Daisy May's BBQ - You gotta love a place that sets up street carts in midtown, even if you can't get the full menu.

Blue Smoke is where it's at for me. It's also very close to my apartment, so I can roll home afterwards.

When I'm in L.A., I love Pecos Bill's in Glendale. I'm not sure if that's because the food is actually good, or I'm just reminiscing about my childhood. Pulled pork sandwiches eaten while waiting for the pony ride in Griffith Park - can't be topped.

have to go with dinosaur bbq, love the blue cheese wedge salad with candied nuts and smoked bacon as well. the bisket is not great but the ribs, chicken, and sausage is consistently good

Nothing compares to Eastern NC bbq and Allen & Son is the best of the best.

Holla:

Allen & Son Barbecue

Chapel Hill, NC 27516

blue smoke barbeque

am I allowed to have many favorite places? I liked red bones in boston, enjoyed dinosaur bbq in harlem very much the three or four times I've been. blue smoke was very very good. And I LOVED the brisket from Salt Lick at the bbq block party a couple years ago. I would say that was my favorite, but I've never been to the actual joint in person, they brought the joint to me. And i was impressed.

Payne's in Memphis!!! Chopped Hot plz.

Well, back about 30 or 40 years ago, when I lived in Memphis, I used to go to the Rendezvous with the owner's son, who was in my high school class. We'd sit at the bar (being several years underage) and he would ply us with samples while we two teenagers consumed with robust delight.

But--- and I say this with all due respect-- my favorite BBQ ever was from any of the now defunct Memphis chain that served pulled pork sandwiches and had a handful of outlets around the city, places like Loeb's, Pig 'n Whistle, Topp's-- all great, all cheap, all only five to ten minutes away.

Several times a month we'd consume mounds of smoked pork on the requisite five inch bun, redolent in hickory aroma, squirted with a few extra doses of runny sauce (not the thick gunk sold in groceries) and always topped by a dollop of a mustardy cole slaw. And held together (briefly) by a toothpick.

Little did I know that this sort of heaven was not available everywhere. Done in by Mickey D, Booger King, etc. and rising real estate costs.

Gotta go with Bailey's Blauvelt Smokehouse in Blauvelt, NY. The brisket there is a work of art. I've been dreaming about Fink's BarbeReuben and BarbeCuban ever since I first went there.

Smoke Joint, Brooklyn. They have really great pork and beef ribs and their Tips n' Bits are a great To-Go item because you can pack it up in a roll and bring it to work the next day for lunch. They're delicious in a cold sandwich. Don't forget their coleslaw -- they've got a vinegar or mayo based one. Same for the sauce, you can go vinegar-based or dark and sweet.

My mom is from northern Alabama, where I spend many summers with my grandparents. They lived very close to to Big Bob's in Decatur, but I'll always claim that nearby Whitt's pulled pork with vinegar sauce and slaw is the best. Very similar in style to what Chris Lilly does, but it's missing one crucial element: childhood memories.

Barbecue is one of those foods that sometimes requires such memories. Like mom's pies or grandma's biscuits, there may be better tasting food out there, but we're always fondest of the food we have the fondest memories of eating.

Gonna have to pick Payne's, in Memphis, TN for this one. The Rendez-Vous is too huge and impersonal, and while I love Neely's in a pinch, Payne's reigns supreme for me in Bluff City. Their pulled pork sandwich (about $3.50) hand-chopped to order by a grandmother who has clearly worked there forever is just about the tastiest thing you can eat in Memphis. The location--the space used to be a gas station and garage--and lack of utensils (save sporks) just adds to the draw of Payne's smoky, moist meat with just a hint of sweetness. Sigh.

PS: Be warned, as the sandwiches do come with cole slaw on top, and that's not to everyone's liking.

Hand down RUB in New York City. For a kind of fancy chain experince Houston's is the way to go.

As a barbecue aficionado, some of the best ribs that I've ever tasted can be found at Uncle Pete's in Boston. It takes Pete two - three days to prepare a rack of ribs. This a guy that is obsessed with ribs, and the taste reflects his devotion - the best I've had!

check out www.unclepetes.com

The BBQ NYC event that's happened for the past three years, most recently on Ward's Island.

rub in manhattan

i love the selection of bbq at Blue Smoke....as well as the strong cocktails that allow so much more food to go down. YUM!

Daisy May's BBQ is the best I've found in NYC. Although the pulled pork was delicious, the highly questionable political views disseminated at Maurice's BBQ in Columbia, SC didn't go down as easily.

I love Ubon's in Yazoo City, MS. They smoke everything beautifully and my mouth is watering just thinking about the food and hospitality they serve up. You cant go wrong with them!

Ubon's also knows exactly how to make PERFECT fried catfish!

In NYC I just cant seem to get myself away from Virgil's...

definitely RUB on 23rd street...just the smell of that place makes my mouth water.

Daisy May's; R.U.B. a close second.

Fette Sau in Brooklyn, mostly for the atmosphere.

I grew up in North Carolina and by far my favorite was Troutman's Barbecue in Denton, NC for the perfect chopped plate. When I moved to Huntsville, AL, I became a Big Bob Gibson's fan - but it's apples and oranges as far as styles go.

Daisy May's, RUB and Dinsosaur

Big W's Roadside BBQ in Pawling, NY

National: Kreuz Market, Lockhart, TX
NY State: Big W's, Pawling, NY
NYC: RUB (Daisy May's loses only b/c of their irritating TV ads)

Blue Ribbon in Arlington, MA if I'm anywhere north of Tennessee. Otherwise, I just can't pick.

But I LOVED both Kreuz Market and the Salt Lick. Mmmmm
