When Water Just Doesn't Cut It Anymore

japanesedrinks.jpg

InventorSpot give their list of the Top Ten Weird and Bizarre Japanese Drinks as proof that Japan is at the forefront of beverage ingenuity. Do you dream of cucumber-flavored Pepsi? They've got it! How about salad flavored water? Got that too! Kids want to join in on the beer-drinking fun? Just give them a frosty bottle of non-alcoholic Kidsbeer!

If you have a local Japanese supermarket ("browsing supermarkets" is one of my major pastimes, at least) be on the lookout for "interesting drinks that probably wouldn't survive in the US market." There are loads of them. Check out Dan's photos of bizarre Japanese beverages for inspiration.

I love cucumber in my water so I am intrigued about the Pepsi. I frequent visit Ranch 99 but the beverages tend to be too sweet for me. Although I tried a fermented basil one once...

Fermented basil?

...Wuh?

Okay, I might try that once.

Not a big fan of Pepsi products but at the Coca Cola Museum in Atlanta, there's a tasting room with about 60 or 70 different flavors made by the Coca Cola Company around the world.

And truthfully, some of the strangest combinations (and the ones I didn't like at all) were Japanese or Chinese.

Although I'm really interested in the Ice Cucumber Pepsi.

Watermelon water I could go for..
Japan has always been ahead of the pack for odd drinks.
When I was there 15 years ago you could get cans of beer from dispensors on the street and there were small cosy animals printed on the tins- teddy bears etc
? ? ?

O detect a certain amount of ground swell in this Pepsi cucumber thing. I, too, really want to try it. Or maybe use it for a facial.
