Whole Foods Opening in London

Whole Foods is opening in London next month. The store will be Whole Foods' first in the U.K. In recent years, all the top chains have relaunched their organic lines in response to consumer demand. It'll be interesting to see how the store is received by Londoners, and if the nickname "Whole Paycheck" will make the Atlantic crossing.

I think this will be hugely popular here, since there really is such limited choice in shopping and 'organic' is a big status symbol. On the other hand, according to the article the shop is opening in Kensington High Street, which manages to be both central and annoyingly out of the way. It's a very posh neighbourhood, where people are used to things being overpriced (well, everything here is horribly expensive actually), so I doubt anyone will bat an eye at the prices. I will probably never make it there, as it's a three underground commute from my neighbourhood. How annoying.

I found London fairly spoiled for choice at the higher end. They've had their own expensive organic chains (fresh & wild, maybe bought by whole foods), plus chains like waitrose. even marks & spencer carries a sizeable selection of decent cheeses and organic goods, especially compared to your average neighborhood grocery in the states.

(of course, the mid-low range of english groceries can really live up to their reputation)

and kensington high st is a posh neighborhood, but it's also such a massive shopping destination, like oxford st with less madness.

as for whole paycheck, if the name doesnt cross, i dont doubt the brits will come up with their own.
