What to Watch This Week

kitchen confidential on dvdDespite the fact that it crashed and burned like a soufflé left in the oven too long, the first and only season of Kitchen Confidential makes it to DVD this week. Darren Star's half-hour riff on Anthony Bourdain's excellent memoir starred Bradley Cooper (Alias) as the stand-in for the wiry world-traveler. I don't think more than half of the 13 episodes collected here aired before Fox loudly announced "Check, please!" but if you're a glutton for a Sex-and-the-Citified sitcom where everyone wears chefs' whites, look no further than this two-disc set. Other stars include cult favorites Nicholas Brendon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and John Francis Daley (Freaks and Geeks). Netflix at your own risk.

It actually wasn't such a terrible show, although it didn't have a thing to do with the real Mr. Bourdain (save the title, of course). If anything it should be remembered for the line, "Ugh, frisee... It's like eating someone's afro."

Did Bourdain give permission to do this? I would suspect not. Though, did he even have to? I would suspect not.

You can still watch Tony on one of the cable channels. He is like fear factor to me with some of the local eats. Iguana tamales, desicated bird egg soup...GACK I was yelling at the tv NO NO NO. I love that guy

Considering the show shares the same name as his book, Bourdain has a writing credit on the show (probably a "based on") and the main character's name is Jack Bourdain, yep, I'm pretty sure he had to give his permission. (And probably got a nice fat check in the process.)

It's actually not a bad show. I probably watched four or five episodes and found it pretty enjoyable.
