Damn You, Bruni! You Beat Me to Vetri's New Joint
A few months ago I wrote about my delicious dinner at Vetri, a stunningly good Italian restaurant on the ground floor of a townhouse on an unassuming street in Philadelphia. Last Friday I was supposed to meet Philadelphia Inquirer restaurant critic Craig Laban at Mark Vetri's new pizzeria-trattoria Osteria. I had to cancel (too much work to do at Serious Eats, and I feared Serious Eaters Adam and Alaina would yell at their overlord).
Now, Mr. Bruni has beaten me and Serious Eats to the punch with a long piece on Vetri in today's New York Times. After reading his account of his meals at Osteria, which sounded like works in progress, I decided that postponing my trip to Philly was providential. By the time Mr. Laban and I reschedule, Osteria will, one hopes, be in full flight, and it will definitely be on my one-day Philly eating adventure. Currently these places are on my dancecard:
A trip to the Reading Terminal Market for one of those incredible, moist buttery, and dare I say light Fisher's Soft Pretzels
A roast pork sandwich and a cheesesteak at John's Roast Pork. (Note to self: get there by 2 p.m., as it closes at 2:30.)
A three-flavor sampler cup at Capogiro Gelato.
Dinner at Osteria, where I will sample many cured meats, pastas, and thin-crusted Roman pizzas (I liked Vetri's pizzas at Bella Blu, the last place he cooked in Manhattan).
I could eat more, but that should do me for one day. Philadelphians: Am I missing anything profoundly delicious, unique, and local?

Wear comfy shoes Ed because Reading Terminal Market is a insane throng in the spring. I am not so crazy about the pretzels and like the ones from Federal Pretzel 638 Federal Street Philadelphia is where I go to pick up a few dozens to feed crowds from out of town.
Also while you are here might I suggest you stop at Wegman's. We have been talking about it for months now. You may have already been but if you haven't go take a look. Closest one to where you will be is 2100 Route 70 West Cherry Hill, NJ. They are open 24 hours but try and go during the day while the bakery is going full throttle.
When in town I always always go to Termini's to pick up some cannoli, there was a time when for christmas I used to wait in line for hours for it to add it to my sweet table. Termini's has a stall at Reading Terminal Market so you can take back a care package to SE crew.
Have a good time and mangia!
If they have Jersey tomatoes at the market buy them nothing is better than a Jersey tomato.
