Working Folks Bust Paula Deen (Not For Making Fried Butter Balls)

pauladeen.jpgThe New York Times today covered an organized labor demonstration protesting Paula Deen's status as spokesperson for Smithfield. The NLRB found that Smithfield unfairly tried to keep a union out of its North Carolina plant. Deen defended the company in no uncertain terms. She probably didn't know that a fired worker trying to organize "had been beaten by the plant's police on the day of the (union) election."

Potentially, this is a win/win. It discredits Paula Deen, who is a disgrace to a proud culinary tradition, and it draws attention to the ongoing malfeasance of Smithfield, Inc.

I love Paula I hate hate hate her cooking. She is a "home" cook.
What angers me more than any damn blasted $%@ thing is hearing people say, "well Paula started out catering..." Paula started out ILLEGALLY catering. If someone had got sick she would have lost her shirt, her hat and her pots and pans. Running catering out of your home is illegal. The fact that people say it was so easy is just plain wrong.
I will also say I love her personality and her earthy warm way. The food she cooks is good but highly unhealthy on a regular basis. Smithfield has been around a long time. In the south the word "union" is poison. They do not like unions (remember the catepillar strike) at all.
Paula is no dummy, she will stick behind her contract where her endorsement stands because legally she HAS to. Paula knows nothing about labor unions nor about the law (guerrilla catering) she just is a woman who has appeal. Her appeal is her success. I admire her success but not her guerrilla catering past.

I have no idea who Paula Deen is. OK, I live under a rock. But, anyone who would be a spokesperson for Smithfield, lives under a bigger rock than I do. Smithfield is not a product that you want to be associated with.
