Molten Chocolate Cake Recipes

moltenchocolatecake.jpg The photo from TeamSugar's recipe for molten chocolate cakes with fresh whipped cream is killing me; the recipe itself, not so much. I do love the teeny little wax paper cups haze1nut chose to bake the cakes in, they're a great idea and I wouldn't mind it if they caught on—but if you're going to make molten chocolate cakes why not use the original recipe from Jean-Georges Vongerichten himself?

(If you're not feeling JGV, Chowhound bakers pointed to their favorite recipes on Epicurious a few months ago, they all sound just as delicious.)

I totally agree. Jean-Georges cupcake accident that produced the popular molten chocolate cake is the best recipe there is.

It would be interesting to have a "tasting" of the various molten chocolate cake recipes side by side by some serious eaters (pun intended) to see what differences exist.

I had an interesting (sic) experience last year. We went out to eat at one of the "best restaurants" in town and ordered the molten chocolate cake for dessert. Now granted, I live in a town where we do not have world-class competitive type restaurants, but anyway.

The next day I happened to be at Wal-Mart. Yes, believe it or not, I was at Wal-Mart. It is frightening, but I do it.

Wal-Mart had frozen molten chocolate cakes for sale, frozen. Volcano cakes, they call them. I got curious and bought them.

One minute in the nuker and there it was. I tasted it.

And I could not discern any serious or flagrant difference between my Wal-Mart cake and the taste-memory of the one I'd had the night before at the restaurant. I really wonder at how much finesse can be found in the various recipes, as a result.

Mmm. Yeah, I was sort of pissed off to think that I might have been eating a Wal-Mart frozen dessert passed off as one made "from scratch" with love and care by the BOH of the place I'd eaten, too. :)
