Meet & Eat: Sam Breach

Today in Meet & Eat, our subject is Sam Breach. If you're an avid, or even casual, reader of foodblogs, you've probably run across her site, Becks & Posh. Her involvement in the thriving foodblog community in San Francisco and at large and her appetite-whetting words and photos have endeared her to many, many readers. In line with her community-building nature, she's the headmistress of Food Blog S'cool, an excellent resource for anyone starting a foodblog or looking to optimize an existing one. OK, without further ado, let's meet Sam.

Sam BreachName: Sam Breach
Location: San Francisco (via England)
Occupation: Digital/technical artist

Favorite comfort food?
Hot buttered toast with marmite and a nice cuppa hot, black char (tea).

Guilty pleasures?
Everything I eat when nobody else is watching. Chocolate, cheese, pork fat, any fat, clairesquares(.com), Twix Bars, etc., etc., etc.

Describe your perfect meal.
The kind that just happens without planning—good friends, wine flowing, secrets shared, laughter, and something delicious on the end of my fork.

Food you won't eat?
I don't think there is anything I wouldn't try, or even try again if I didn't like it the first time. That said, it's not like I've yet come across anything of Bourdain-challenging proportions yet, so maybe I'd wimp out if faced with raw seal blubber.

What food haven't you eaten that you'd like to try?
I can't tell you. I've told people before and they no longer speak to me.

Favorite food person?
Amanda Berne, senior cook book editor at 10 Speed Press and previously a food critic and writer at the San Francisco Chronicle. We met two years ago when she interviewed me for an article and became firm friends. She is the professional, I am the obsessed amateur, and we rub off against each other perfectly.

When did you realize you were a serious eater?
Although I have loved to cook for my whole life, and indulged in dining out throughout adulthood, I think I only became a really "serious eater" after I started blogging about food. This hobby has opened my eyes to so many aspects of food I hadn't considered before that my only regret is that I didn't discover all of this potential deliciousness sooner.

What do your family and friends think of your food obsession?
I haven't heard them complain yet, and they all seem quite happy to let me experiment on them.

Favorite food sites/blog?
Just one? How can I pick just one? I think Catherine's Food Musings is the site I check first every day. And it's not just because she is my friend—I have many friends with blogs, so it seems rather mean to pick out just one. But Catherine's writing is so exquisite and so delicious, I can never resist the opportunity to peek in and check out what she ate last night.

Hey, Sam. Ed Levine here. Say hello to Amanda Berne for me. She and I spent a day eating at ten pizzerias when I was out in SF promoting my Pizza book. SF is a pretty lousy pizza town, but it is getting better.

Ed. I remember that article well. I didn't realise that was YOU. I didn't make the connection. There are a few pizzas in SF I like well enough. I'll mention you to Amanda, for sure.
